REFLECTOR 1953 Published by the Senior High East Berlin High School East Berlin, Pennsylvania Foreword Treasured memories stored away in pages of a book Memories of our school day follies, Back to which we oft will look; Thoughts at which our hearts will tingle, Names of friends with whom we mingled, Deeds of fame that had been done, Triumphs that were fairly won, Teachers honored by us all Tireless duty doth recall. Of such noble thoughts as these Are our school day memories.” Page 2 Dedication We, the class of 53”, dedicate this year’s edition of the Reflector to Mr. Norman Kroft. Mr. Kroft, known to us as Norm,” has rendered many services to us in the past years. Not only has he kept the school respectable for the comfort of all involved, but he has served it faithfully. Whenever Mr. Kroft has been called upon by the various organizations throughout the school, he has willingly given his time and knowledge. Page 3 Seated: P. Lerew, C. Baker, B. Anthony, H. It is with pride in our hearts that we express our thanks for their efforts on behalf of the Jointure to help provide better instruction for all. Surely an example of cooperation such as these men have dis- played shall give us sharp focus of what a united effort can do to establish more adequate educational facilities for the future graduating classes of the Conewago Joint School System. Page 34 Class Prophecy My, how time does fly. It’s I960 already! I guess 1 11 have to gefl busy because I’ve a lot of work to do. Oh! Excuse me; 1 didn't see you. My name is Crystal. As you can see, I'm a crystal ball. The East Berliners of ’53 appointed me their official guardian. I’ve been very rude in forgetting them. Would you like to join me on my journey? Step inside the magic ball with me and we’ll be off. We’ve landed directly in the heart of Washington, D. C. Look over there at that man scrubbing the White House steps! I believe he’s talking to himself. It’s Paul Lingg. Listen to him: Those years.’’ So much for that poor fellow. Let’s look inside the White House. There’s the President’s headquarters, and I believe a conference is being held. We might as well continue our journey, for we can’t see much with all that smoke. Someone’s terribly busy in the outer office. It’s Joyce Hinkle, a very studious person! She’s typing a flash bulletin— FLASH: President Darwin Dissinger, Secretary of Interior Ned Miller, and Secretary of De- fense Ralph Bentzel discussed the world problem of principals’ resignations in all schools. — That is a problem! Speaking of problems, there seems to be one in that room across the hall. Let’s investigate. It’s the great mechanical mathematicians Larry Schmuck and Carl Fogle. It’s impossible!’’ I say it isn’t. Why it’s proven right here! That’s Larry; he says two equals one! I think we’d better be on our way. Here we are in the great metropolis of New York City. The theatres are so beautiful, especially that one, owned and managed by Samuel Ebersole. My Secret Love, starring Fern Deardorff and Glenn Krysher, is playing. Would you care to join me? I’ll buy the tickets from the ticketgirl, Marie Wallace. We can sit here in the center rowj Ouch, who is throwing that popcorn from the balcony? Usher, usher! Now who do we find as usher but Junior Ensor and our villains in the balcony, Sara Lucas and Anna Rohrbaugh. I hope that usher can handle them. Let’s walk down the street and see what else we can find. Now, that’s a familiar name, The Brantley School of Dancing. His star pupils are Shirley Toot, Janet Chronister, and Helen Altland. A little noisy, but they are good. No, I agree; it isn’t as noisy as the commotion around the corner. From what I can see, it’s a policewoman arresting two young fellows. That flashing red hair could belong to but one person, and naturally, it is Shirley Goodwin. The very nervous fellows are Friz Racer and A1 Jacobs. The people say they were preparing to dig. What did you say? What’s dig? Why that is, I mean, I think we’d better be moving along. It’s getting late. It's the land of pine-needles, pines and pretty girls. How did I know it was Arizona? Why over there is Mr. Gruver. Did you just see something fly by? They’re bullets, and I know where they came from — Harmless Harvey Stimer’s shot gun. We won’t take any chances; here’s a board. Hum, do you smell those vittles? That aroma is coming from the direction of the C Lazy B’s Ranch. Let’s go! We can’t miss out on JoAnn McClure’s cooking. I’m sure Claude Baker, the foreman, wouldn’t mind if we just took a peek. Let’s ask that ranch hand. Oh, I’m sorry; it’s Wayne Strayer and he’s fast alsleep. This certainly is a big change — a beauty contest. We’re in California. There is a cutie in the aqua bathing suit. It’s Janet Spahr, and a prize-winner at that! Those bathing suits are really unique. I suppose we could find out who designed them if we take a glance at the program. The bathing suits were designed by Carol Ostrom; the hair styles by Joyce Gladfelter. Those reporters over there seem very angry. Let’s check. I believe the tele- phone line is tied up. Oh, the operators are Janette Doherty and Doris Ann Fitzkee; they’re telling jokes! Can you hear them clearly? We’re en route again; no wonder we couldn’t hear them. That was some ride! It seems we’ve gone thousands of miles. My guess wasn’t too far off — Paris, France. We can catch up on the lates news by reading that newspaper. An opera is at the Palace. Tenors Wayne, Wayne Rodgers and Wayne Stambaugh, have top billing. Dare we stop at Maxim’s (Writer’s note: Remember, we’re in Paris!) Certainly no one will be there we know. This is a surprise. I see a familiar face already. Over there, the hatcheck girl; she’s quite a cutie, and it’s Doris Strickler. There seems to be some argu- ment in the reserved section for foreign diplomats. The gentlemen are Jacque Hoffman and Fred Ebersole. Did you hear them mention blondie ? It’s probably a secret word. So much for them! We just made it in time for the main feature. The B and C of Burlesque, pre- senting Betty Fourhman and Caroline Myers! Waiter, may I please have an aspirin. My head is dizzy — We seem to be back in Pennsylvania. Not too much of interest around here except those two ladies watching their husbands mow' the lawn. The names on the mailbox are Mr. and Mrs. Merle Bievenour and Mr. and Mrs. Robert King. In single life it was Patsy Lemmon and Daryl Toot. Now would you guess it? According to m list that covers everyone. It’s been quite a trip, don’t you think? I’m glad you could join me; but now- I must go. A report has to be made on all these wonders our class of ’53 has presented. Maybe I’ll see you again in a few years. Once more we found ourselves in the halls of East Berlin High School when the school bell rang in September. We were proud to receive the book of knowledge and also the thought of being a year higher, a step closer, to our goal. Our junior year opened with campaign speeches, posters, and the election of student council and class officers. We also found some of our classmates starring in Drums of Death. We closed the year by holding the Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the seniors. These are only a few of our many achievements. Well, tighten your thinking caps because here goes! First Mr. Carr, our ever faithful advisor, and Betty Fourhman, the editor, who fulfilled our every dream, selected capable members from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades to serve on the yearbook staff. Once organized, the different committees went their own way to sell subscriptions, solicit patrons, do write-ups, or accomplish their assigned task. Each week we met and combined our materials. New problems arose and Betty lost more of her hair. Honestly, more pencils were chewed on than we could find. The publishing deadline came nearer and we all worked like busy beavers. We checked and rechecked our work, and then set about to do the finishing touches. At last, we met our deadline and we all relaxed to lead our normal lives again. Through a strenuous school election campaign the Student Council began their yearly duty. That is, to schedule social and money-making events and help in various scholas- tic problems. Competent and beneficial, the Student Council has been successful in giving students a voice in government. Functions are carried out each year by our main committees. The Social Committee, headed by Nancy Jacobs, supervises and directs the social activities. When traffic becomes heavy in the halls or a fire drill is held, our Safety Committee, with their experienced leader, Naomi Miller, takes control of the situation. Robert Boyer and Joyce Gladfelter, combining efforts of the Athletic and Program committees, sponsored afternoon recreation for the student body. Included were intramural basketball, ping-pong, dancing and talent shows. One of the most successful functions by the Student Council was the Magazine Drive. Sales totaled over $2,200. The money will be used for school needs. We hope that you, as a student, will strive to enter our Council and become an active member in developing leadership, in promoting school interest and cooperation, and encouraging improvement in scholarship. The activities varied from our Patch Dance” to attending the Older Girl’s Conference in Lebanon and also the United Nations Assembly in Harrisburg. During the Christmas season, the Tri-Hi-Y helped to arrange a dance, from which the profits were used to help some less fortunate people enjoy the holiday season more. The Tricky Teen Club, advised by Miss Miller, is a service club which is very helpful to the school. Beginning this year with a large membership, the club considered many useful projects such as filling Christmas boxes, a candy sale, painting and cleaning the nurses’ room, and cleaning the girls’ locker room. In the spring the Junior Prom, which is an annual social event directed and sponsored by the Tricky Teens and the Junior Hi-Y, attracts many junior high school pupils. This usually tops off the activities until another year. The Kanawago Senior Hi-Y is enjoying another successful year with Mr. Fissel as its guiding hand. The club is affiliated with the State Young Men’s Christian Association and is open to all boys in the senior high school. The highlight of the year is the Older Boys’ Conference, which was held November 19-20, 1952, at Chambersburg. Jacque Hoffman presided over the conference, having been elected president of the South Central District and Lanny Oberlander was named vice- president of the South Central District for next year. Another important part of the club’s program is the Teen-Talk discussion program. The Hi-Y had the honor of winning the banner for 1952 with the highest score in the district. Club members also attended the annual Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Rally held at Gettys- burg College on September 27, 1952. Also, members of the club attended the District Con- ference held in the spring. Mr. Fissel also acts as advisor to the Junior Hi-Y, preparing them for the activities and duties that will eventually confront them in the Senior Hi-Y. Although several boys attended the Older Boys ’Conference and the District Rally, the biggest event is the Junior Prom for which these hard-working boys struggle with the Tricky-Teens to make a success. Service projects of the club include packing gift boxes for the needy and giving donations to various organizations. Even though these activities do keep them busy, there is time for skating parties, dances, and other social events throughout the school year. Chapter sold cider and also held a joint Hallowe’en party with the F. H. A. A pest control contest was held during December which aided the farmers in the destroying of pests. All members participated. The broilers which were raised by the F. F. A. furnished the necessary fowl for the Father and Son Banquet held in March. A club would be little fun without some recreation. Therefore, our chapter competes wtih other F. F. A. chapters in basketball, softball, and other area contests. Their first big project was that of conducting the Apple-Pan-Dowdy Contest which was won by Grace Nickey. Oh! What about the Cherry Pie Contest? That was held in the latter part of the year and was won by a good baker in the F. H. A. Being a very active club, it keeps everyone happy by feeding the students peanuts from the peanut sale and providing an opportunity for them to display their hobbies at the hobby show and in so doing compete for the prizes. At the Schoolman’s Association meeting in the high school, the F. H. A. served the food for the banquet. Well, look in the direction of Room 21 because that well known click comes from Mr. Schade’s shutter-bugs. Since our curiosity has been aroused, let’s explore farther. Upon opening the door, we find a few- members missing. Inquiring, we find they are in the basement preparing a dark room in which they will develop their many snapshots. Looking around, we see Mr. Schade explaining some difficult machinery to another group. It soon becomes evident that this is audio-visual equipment, and all the members are learning to operate it. The Science Club is of service to all who are interested in exploring the different fields of science. It gave us much pleasure, during the present school term, to make and contribute forty Thanksgiving favors for the Adams County Home. Christmas favors and cookies were also sent to the Army hospital at Indiantown Gap. East Berlin High has the privilege of entertaining the Adams County Council in October. At any rate, you sing your part under the direction of Mrs. Elgin and the accompaniment of Doris Ann Fitzkee. Girls’ Chorus Listen to that high C ringing as clear as a bell. The only source of such heavenly music would have to be the soprano section. A low, mellow tone blends in richly as the altos strut their stuff.
