It's a step forward in our progress from being iust children, to becoming adult citizens, capable of helping to shape the destiny of our country. We, the Seniors of nineteen hundred fifty-six, hope to give in this edition of East Bend Whispers, a picture of ourselves, the underclassmen, and faculty, so that we, as well as others, may see us as we really are. May this annual serve as a display of high school memories for us to cherish in years to come. YADKIF COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY' P. O. BOX 607 HUKHWHLLNCRWM5 vom- uembn of HWESTER-H lusozolnu. Mascot Mascot Mm 5 15 5 Y .4 DUN? A Class History September, l944, beheld the assembly of thirty-eight, duly vaccinated and registered, students in Miss Hattie Poindex- ter's first grade. After becoming accustomed to school discipline, we began our education by learning our numbers and alpha- bet. At the end of our first year we were happy to be informed that twenty-five of us were A students. In the second grade our class was divided between Mrs. Bernice York and Miss Jessie Horn. During this year we dis- covered that we were no longer the youngest students in school and we felt proud of our seniority. Our education now advanced into readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic. Under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Pickett, our third year was filled with learning the multiplication table, and how to be polite and appreciative. We were grieved by the death of our Principal, Mr. W. A. Beal, early in our fourth year in school. Mrs. Erline Martin filled his position for the remainder of the year.iMiss Jessie Horn, our teacher, introduced us to a new and exciting subiect about faraway lands and the customs of the inhabitants of these lands. We found that the name of this subject was World Geo- graphy. The boys' creative ability was displayed by the construction of a straw house on the far end of the play ground. The reason it went up in flames one day was known only by a small group of fourth grade boys. ln Mrs. Ward 's fifth grade we took up History and also found that geography becomes less interesting when you have to copy a few pages of it for talking on class. For amusement, Mrs. Ward read us the adventures of Brer Rabbit and other stories. We gained fuller use of our hands in the sixth grade, with art and handwriting courses under the tutorship of the former Miss Stacy Matthews, now Mrs. Zollie Church. Our interest in athletics, especially basketball, was increased by Mrs. Laura Brendle in our seventh year in school. We were also filled with the wonders of travel when our class made a trip to Raleigh on the activity bus with our grade mothers. Our final year in elementary school found thirty-one studious pupils working for their eighth grade diplomas. Among our studies was a course in North Carolina History which was climaxed by the memorizing and reciting of the one hundred coun- ties and county seats, along with the presentation of a play called the Lost Colony. Our competitive spirit was aroused by our competition with Fall Creek and Forbush in various sports. This year was highlighted by an excursion to Winston-Salem, tour- ing tobacco factories and various historic sites. In our first year in high school we were ioined by twenty-two other students from Fall Creek and Forbush, making a class total of fifty-three. The girls' homeroom teacher was Miss Margaret Petrea and the boys' teacher was Mr. C. W. For- tune. After learning where to go and what to do we settled down to work, with our final goal at East Bend High in mind: Graduation. As Sophomores the boys were greeted by Mr. Stanback, the new coach and homeroom teacher who replaced Mr. Jack Duncan. The girls' homeroom teacher was Mr. Williams. As Juniors with our sponsor, Mrs. All'ine Martin, our work centered around the Junior-Senior Banquet which was held at the El Cam Rey Restaurant in Winston-Salem. We lost our English teacher, Mrs. Erline Martin, but she was replaced by Miss Alice Brumfield. Other new teachers were Miss Maxine Hayworth, the home economics teacher, and Mr. James Morgan, the coach and math teacher. At last we are Seniors. With a new English teacher and sponsor, Mr. I. W. Singletary, we have put on our Senior dig- nity and prepared ourselves for the ups and downs of Senior life. Our class officers this year are: President, Daniel Routh, Vice-President, Allen Cornelius, Secretary, Dare Myers, and Treasurer, Rachel Wall. Our class colors are black and white, and our flower is the white carnation. The importance of our future was stressed by Mr. R. J. Smitherman, our principal, in encouraging us to continue our education after graduation. The new home economics teacher this year is Miss Sallie Huffman. The secondary goal for our Senior year, around which a large quantity of our work revolved, was our trip to Washington which we made in the early Spring. Our primary goal, that of graduation, was reached May 29, 1956, when eighteen boys and sixteen girls received their diplomas. And now with the motto, Conduct and Courage lead to Honor, present in their minds, the class of 1956 of East Bend High School make their way into the world. The final chapter of our class history remains to be written. What will it hold? This question will be answered by each individual in how he uses his future.
