Mascot CLASS HISTORY A warm day in September, 1943, a group of about fifty students made their way in the first grade. Our teachers, Mrs. Lydia Johnson and Miss Jessie Horn, started our adventure in school by teaching us to read about Mac and Puff. The next year Mrs. Bernice York taught us to spell, add, and subtract. Our third grade teacher, Mrs. Pickett, besides teaching us many others things, especially encouraged us to be quiet and polite. In the fourth grade, under Miss Jessie Horn, we took up a new subject which was geography. Mrs. Nora Ward, our fifth grade teacher, aroused our interest by reading Brer Rabbit and many other famous stories to us. We received pins for expert writing inthe sixth grade, and for this weare proud of Mrs. Stacy M. Church. In the seventh grade we learned to play basketball under the direction of Mrs. Laura Brendle. We toured Winston-Salem inthe eighth grade with our teacher Mrs. Alma Pardue. We learned a lot about North Carolina, but the most important thing was receiving our eighth grade diploma. Our first year in high school was very important to us because we took up many new subjects. Our home- room teacher, Mrs. George Taylor, taught us health, home economics, and English. There wereeight new students from Fall Creek this year. Mr. Fortune was the boys ' homeroom teacher, and Mr. George Taylor taught math and coached the boys ' and girls ' basketball teams. During our sophomore year, Mr. Williams was the girls ' homeroom teacher. There were two new teachers this year. They were Miss Petrea, who taught the girls home economics, and Mr. Duncan, the boys ' homeroom teacher and the basketball coach. There were several new students to join us this year. Mrs. Alline Martin, our homeroom teacher during our junior year, helped us make plans for the junior- senior banquet which we so eargerly looked forward to. It took place at Banner ' s Restaruant in Winston-Salem. A new teacher this year was Mr. Standback, the basketball coach and math teacher. Our twelfth and final year is now upon us. We have at last become seniors . This year we lost a very good teacher who was Mrs. Erline Martin, but Miss Alice Brumfield replaced her as our teacher and leader. An- other important teacher and leader was Mr. Smitherman, who was also our principal. The new coach this year was Mr. Morgan. We are proud of our seniorclass officers who are, President, Pattie Haga; Vice-President, D.C. Cornelius; Secretary, Audrey Nichols; Treasurer, Nell Grey Wilhelm. Our class colors are blue and white. Our motto is, Today we follow; tomorrow we lead, and our flower is the red rose. During this year we took several important trips. In the early Fall, the majority of the class attended the Ice Capades in Raliegh. We also made a tour of Winston-Salem later in the Spring, but the most important trip was visiting Washington, D.C, and Endless Caverns. At last on May 31, 1955, we reached our goal — graduation. We left ole East Bend High and our many friends, but fond memories will remain with us forever.
