I was born in 1912 as Cabin Creekxxx District High School and have faithfully served the patrdns of the Cabin Creek Area for forty-four years. I have come to salute the graduating class of 1956, and share with them the wonderful memories of my life until now. My first graduating class coyrlsisted of three members in 1915. There were four teachers to instruct thirty-five students. My, how I have grown! The present graduating class consists of two htmfiied-,.,,N and thirty-six members. In my middle age I am bulging at my seams with a faculty of thirty-four members and an enrollment of one thousand nine students. Ihate to boast, but after all I am the seventh largest high school in the state. My heart swells with pride when I think of my graduates who have disting- uished themselves in all phases of life throughout the world. I On each page of your annual, you will find recorded some memories of my past life, which I wish to share with you. Though the events of my past have been inspiring and rewarding, I look for- ward with faith, hope, and trust in the men and women I shall meet in the future. Since 1924, Ihave had the excellent guidance of Dr. Dana R. Ervin. Dur- ing his administration more than five thousand students have been graduated. As I go to press, Ihave just received one of the highest athletic honors in the state, that of the Class A Basketball Championship. It is with great pleasure that I dedicate this, the 1956 Kanawhan, to Mr. Williams, Mr. Butta, Mr. Spelock and the Class Champions of West Virginia! va K i 1 , J f 1 V 1 , 4 tg Xl X i 1 e .A ' 'Q ff .1 J ' ' ' N5 N I, Q 1 h , 1 N N V 1 ,Z I X, Q.. , fl S I1 1 Q x g Xa N.. v Q . , x A E S ' , 5 ' ,. v .. - - I Q . . 1 A 1 .- Y 1 , , V N- 1 5 , sv R N Q 3 aa A k X -J x NIJ X Q 5 J fi ' M 1 , W v - ,ir J A5 . ,f M 'Q j 1 cr- c V, X JN .J e E 24661 Y ff ! 2529 Q23 4 ' f 'N , l X y p i fi Cijj X3 k JA I Page TWO Q ,S-5 W ' The Kanawhan, 1956 vw. 1'- zJ7 jl?f!yj',,fgyff X 5 jxxwyh PM J '4 T j X 'If P 4 V ll ll lm I ,K S- 3-T li iliiislsisl Q5 'Cuff 'z - I Ellllllltlllllll EI Illlllllllllllli .IIIII I ,. lllillllllll I P.-- 3 ll'- I Il I I I --WW --II lllllllllllm I ig --,T I 1 .i- ADMINISIRIIIQN if-A , 4, me ef 'ig 5 f 5 Graduates 'iff ' Wy 4'Ib-f A ,, d. if 32 ye-gif, I.,,, .42 D-.3 f fl ,-2, -7 33 I 4 mem IIII f ., ' ! l i ,ff I fe 35 Students 5' I f ,,4I M,MII bm ' ' A 'I I f' X , V W N A X4 . , I The Kanawh an, 1956 Page mee J IWR. We did not think we'd ever find Our way from room to room, But everyone was very kind And vanished all our gloom. Our junior year was full of glee, Laughter, fun and all the rest, And filled with confidence were we, We felt our school was the very best. Then we started our senior yea.r, There our dream began to grow, And, when we knew graduation was near Our he arts began to glow. Our dream, at last, is now so near, And we feel frightened and alone, Again we 're filled with doubts and fe ar, Because we know we 're on our own. But soon our fears and doubts will flee, And, if fate does her part, Our dream will become a reality And live forever in our he art. Student Gonqress The student co-government association was established in the spring of 1938 by the following members of one ofthe senior social studies classes: William Pryor, Nancy Williams and Fred Wise. The first student coun- cil, composed of class officers of the sophomore, junior and senior classes, elected William Pryor as President, Fred Wise as Vice-President and Nancy Williams as Secretary-Treasurer. The first project was to acquaint the incoming sophomores with the course of study and activities of the senior high school. Aletter was sent by the student council to the ninth grade class in each junior high school in the area. From this small beginning developed the annual junior High Day when the members of the ninth grade classes are transported to the senior high school for a day of orientation. The present student co-government association organization, with its student congress, class states and home room counties, an outgrowth of the American Legion Boys' and Girls' States, was probably the first one in the United States to be based on national, state and county government. fhC6I'5 Row 1 Qleft to rightj: Vice -President, Ann Gay, President, janice Mont- gomery, Treasurer, Juanita Wilson.
