Equipped with camera and film, we begin Part II of our journey, wending our way deeper into the heart of our school. Suddenly we find ourselves standing on the threshold of the innermost recesses of Eastern civiliza- tion, that impenetrable mystery known as The Olhce. Photographically speaking, it would be called the dark room, for it is here that many important developments occur. The board, composed of eight elected members and an appointed secretary, worked on committees to recom' mend teachers and salaries, examine build! ings and grounds, and estimate the financial needs to operate the schools for the follow- ing tiscal period. The members met monthly with Dr. Gates, superintendent of the Iiast side schools, to consider every possible means of bettering education. This year the Board of liducation under- took a three-phase program to take care of the problem of increasing numbers of chil- dren in the schools. First they are increasing the number of classrooms from kindergarten through high school.
