No matter what the future holds for the high school student, English will play an im- portant part in his life. And what is English without oral themes! Who does not remember the times we gave the title and forgot the rest or, while nervously leafing through our notes, dropped a few? Along with oral themes come participial phrases, Ivanhoe , and Tennyson. Whether it's speech, journalism, rhetoric, or business English, it's all under the supervision of the English de- partment. Oops! wrong key . . . oh, well, what's another mistake more or less . . . mostly more. ' All this train of thought shows how worn the nerves of the beginning typist can be. Even the calm and hopeful secretary of the future hnds shorthand a little trying at times when all the curlyques don't fit in their right places. Bookkeeping always proves interesting, yet hec- tic, when the debits get mixed with the credits and vice-versa. Distributive Education rounds out the curricu- lum of the Commercial department, which pre- pares the student for whatever problems he may meet in the business world. ,in-.sans ..16.. Trotto just 1 few of the many accomplishments of the art depart- ment weaving vs xtercolor and chalk work, toys, and posters. l --1g.. MUSIC and ARTS Did you know East High was simply overflowing with talent? There are enough amateur Rem- brandts and Mozarts around here to fill a miniature Greenwich Vil- lage. And they're all good too, though we never quite realize it until the art exhibit or music con- cert. Among the front row of unsung heroes, these two groups go quietly about their work performing a real service to the school. The art de- partment is responsible for the rna- jority of posters seen about East, plus stage scenery, and Red Cross work. Among the music depart- ment's many jobs is making melody for school convocations, produc- tions, and for the Cantata.
