For in- stance, as a teaser, the young and innocent stu- dent may take Arithmetic, or if he chooses, Algebra, a bracing subject for a beginner. This he either Hunks or passes. For the sake of a happy ending, we'll say he passes-and so, feeling gay, he signs up for Ge- ometry, Plane fif he wants college creditj, Prac- tical Qif he's machine mindedj If the student comes through this with flying colors-or even banners at half mast-it's a sign of definite success. Now he can afford to be reckless. Conse- quently, he has a brief fling at Advanced Algebra. If this ordeal is survived the student is usually mathematically impervious to all failure, so he signs up for Solid Geometry and Trigonometry which slide by with no effort at all-well prac- tically none!
