You see, the Student Council governs the entire student body. These are the students who led the Student Council during the past year -Warren Muth, presidentg Marion Stolp, secretary-tre-asurerg Mary Crego, secretary-treasurerg and Ralph Foster, vice-president. During Student Day, the entire school was run under the supervision of pupils. Here we have Ralph Foster, who fulfilled Mr. Hunter's place as Dean of Boys, VC'arrcn Muth, who acted as principal for Mr. Walters, and Helen judt who took over Miss O'Neil's position as Dean of Girls. It looks as though Warren is taking ad- vantage of being principal for a day, for this poor freshman boy is being presented with a 7 :3O because he vio- lated traffic regulations on the stairway. , If iology I Director of Athletics I , f ' ELEANOR F. Well, that can easily be remedied now that the Music Department has a stroboscope with which to tune instru- ments accurately. Not many high schools are fortunate enough to own one. Careful! Don't pound your thumb while mak- ing those tables, magazine racks and other use- ful articles for the home. By the way, rumor has it that one of the boys in the general shop made a hope chest. The presses are rolling! A busy, busy place where programs, tickets, posters and the Azzromfz are printed. l16l Printing the programs for the Music Festival is the main job of the boys on this day. Soon they will be fastening them into the attractive covers they printed yesterday. Another division of the Dad's little helpers department, better known as General Shop, is metal working. The boys make lamps, meas- ures, mail boxes, baskets for fireplaces, and other articles of use in the home. 25617 Tumbling, pyramid building, dancing, sports, and like activities keep the girls in the Physical Education Department happy and healthy. Squares, circles, hexagons, rectangles, and oblongs-all are important to the math stu- dents who see their practical use in engineer- ing, art, and science. Even Aurora has changed in the last few years, so Mr. T. L. Carlson's Civic classes have been busy compiling data for a revised Government of Aurora pamphlet. Do you feel a creative urge? The art depart- ment is a fine place to test your ability. Soap carvings, pottery, clay models, book-cover designs, sketches and water color pictures are the products of the amateur artist of East High. 19 I y y Donlt cry, just go to Miss Krug's office and she The only class in East High where it is proper will be glad to fix you up as good as new. C l a s s of 1940 Ceremonial Benediction 7 l50l 'max Q raw Henry Aldrich, famed character of screen, stage and radio appeared in What a Life, April 25- 26, under the direction of Miss Eliza Thomas. Henry, a frequent caller in the school oflice was first sent there by Miss Egelston for drawing pic- tures. Here complications arose when Henry asked Barbara Pearson to the Spring Dance to which he would be allowed to go under two conditions. The hrst, if he would pass his his- tory examination, and the second, pass it with the highest grade in his class. This he accom- plished . . . with the aid of George Bigelow's paper. Of course, much to his sorrow, Henry was found guilty for doing this. The same day, the band instruments which had been stolen, were found in a pawn shop, under Henry's name. Instead of attending a reform school for this crime, he was allowed to take a course in art at the South Side Trade School. It was later discovered that George was respon- sible for the disappearance of the instruments. To complete this happy discovery, Henry was given tickets so that he could take Barbara to the dance. After the instruments were returned from the pawn shop, the detective checks them over to see that none of them are missing. A daily occurence in every high school, as well as in Central High, is a line of students waiting to receive their excuses. 51 I Richard Blakinger, Margie Weston, and Mary Crego were chosen as Commencement speakers because of their high scholastic standing, their service to the school, and their ability in speaking. Old rags, shoes, hats, furniture! Anything will dog Weill sell it.', This might be said by any senior as he collects rummage each year for the annual rummage sale of the Senior Class, and Parent-Teacher Association. l52l' During Stunt Day, seniors as well as underclassmen won prizes because of the fashion in which they dressed. Bob Mall and Don Tennant were among those who received honors. Bob was dressed as a circus clown, while Don frightened students by his costume, an original interpretation of Frankenstein. The money which the Speculum doesn't receive from the activity tickets must be secured from the business men of Aurora. All seniors are eligible to go out for the Patron Drive, This year the senior boy who turned in the most money was Stanley Whitmore. On Friday, each class wore its own colors, although here and there were seen a few divided loyalties with rainbow variations. Girls' Club sponsored a new activity this year-fPal Week. During this week girls made friends with ladies from Sunnymere by writing letters to them, and later giving them a party. Since then the girls and their pals have exchanged gifts, given parties, and spent many enjoyable times together. The most important and helpful event that the Girlsf Club sponsors jointly with the Aurora Beacon-News Empty Stocking Fund, is the annual Christmas Party for the many needy children of Aurora. Santa Claus seems to be making these children happy as he pre- sents them with gifts that make their eyes sparkle. my me Z Making arrangements for all pictures, taking them, trimming, mounting, and identifying them is all the work of the photography department. This year's activities started off with the girls practicing fundamental techniques and studying the rulesg then a bang-up intra-school tournament followed. The girls had a spread for the winning hockey team. A set of skill tests were given also, but the high light of the season was the mixed East-West game, where the teams really mixed in a fast one. Basketball--one of the most popular sports in G.A.A. A practice sent the team bouncing through the season and the final game of the class tournament closed the score books. What were the results of that last game? The seniors reigned supreme. East High also had guests from West Aurora, Batavia, DeKalb, Geneva and Yorkville at the big basketball play day. Other seasonal activities were the OHicial's Classes and the State Telegraphic Basket Shooting Contest. A shuttlecock, a five ounce racket, a court, and speed spells-badminton, punctuated with lots of fun. In- struction was given to the girls in the fine points of the game, then a tournament held full sway for a while. The games were hotly contested and the en- tire season was really a lively one. Along with bad- minton, a table tennis tournament was held. Archery-The meetings of the archery enthusiasts were held at the athletic field. After the archers unearthed their point of aim they finally started scoring in the bullis eye. The season was climaxed by the students shooting in a junior Round Robin Tournament. In the spring a G.A.A. girl's fancy turns to-tennis. Early in the season balls, rackets, and girls made it hot for any available wall space. What were they doing? Practicing the forehand, backhand, and serv- ice. After much practice the girls adjourned to the courts and played off an elimination t't i tournament. East High also had several tennis meets with girls in other schools. .
