Members of the East High Thunderbirds wrestling team are FRONT ROW: Richard Clay, Jon Brewington, Mike Hill, Jerry Law, Carl Young, Bill Gale, Dan Church, and Craig Hamacher, manager, and BACK ROW: Coach Bob Senden, Howard Loomis, Ronald Wierzbicki, James Gale, Jim Biederman, Joe Wilson, Mark Whitehurst, and Coach Ronald LaValIey. Wrestling The East High wrestling team began practices on January 6 under the experienced coaching of Mr. Ronald LaValley and Mr. Robert Senden, Daily workouts and inter-class wrestle-offs conditioned the T-Bird wrestlers for repeated victories fagainst Chugiak, Dimond, Homer, Kenai, Lathrop, Seward, and West. The return of many experienced lettermen aided the East squad as they opened the season with an impressive 30-0 victory over the Seward Seahawks. These meets prepared the East matmen for WAHSAA Tournament on March 28-29 at Dimond High School. Carl Young attempts to take down his counterpart in a meet against Lathrop.

Pictured rifle team members are FRONT ROW: Sharon Hill, Linda Dreese, Susan Krumery, Marie Steadman, and Betsy Fleishauer, and BACK ROW: Genelle Scott, Barbie Deno, Mike Douglas, Doug Wooster, Valorie Walker, Steve Brooks, and Mike Rocas. Acting Mayor Bill Besser presents Valorie Walker with her trophy which she earned during the Mayor's 100 match. Rifle Team Improving the students' shooting ability as well as teaching gun safety was the goal of the East High rifle team. Equipment and ammunition was furnished by the club for the six week course required for membership. Students were taught to shoot in prone, kneeling, sitting, and offhand positions. Practice sessions were held at the Orah Dee Clark Junior High Rifle Range every Monday and Wednesday evening. Officers of the rifle team were Bruce Palmer, president, Ron Wendte, vice-president, Betsy Fleishauer, treasurerg Steve Brooks, secretary, and Genelle Scott, stat officer. Club sponsor this year was Mrs. Carol Ross. December 2-9 Wiggly lceworm Prone Tournament January 13-18 City of Anchorage Prone Championship February 10-15 Fur Rendezvous Championship March 24-29 National Junior Sectionals April 21-26 Alaska State Indoor Championship May 19-24 Alaska State Outdoor Championship Genelle Scott practices her prone position shooting for an upcoming match.
