In Retrospect . . . Brilliant successes and monumental failures marked the year of 1968-69. During a year of heated political contests, many noted figures faded in and out of the limelight. The American two-party system of governe ment was challenged by George Wallace in a third party bid for the presidency. The tenuous thread of hope for peace in Vietnam was strengthened by the opening of peace talks between the U. S. and North Vietnam in Paris. Offsetting this step toward global peace was the Biafran rebellion. Aside from war casualties, more than a million people died of starvation. Display of armed might was not limited to Africa and Southeast Asia. The Soviet Union's occupation of Czechoslovakia threatened chances for East-West co- operation. Despite political chaos at an international, as well as a national level, scientific achievements were numerous. As 1968's seemingly miraculous heart-transplants became more commonplace, Apollo Vlll and IX expanded men's frontiers with NASA's space exploration program progressing in a string of stunning successes. In a year of conflicting events, student riots were balanced by gargantuan efforts of many separate organizations to aid the suffering Biafrans. North Korea returned the crew of the USS Pueblog but, conversely, the USSR invaded Czechoslovakia. NASA continued probing into space with the highly successful Apollo series. This double exposure shows the Saturn V booster lifting the Apollo Vl ll spacecraft towards the moon. The Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia and reversed the liberal trends of the Czech leadership.
