X River Community High School are Those given by members of The Faculty Urol Service Club. This altruistic group, organized in 1956, asks nothing but The satisfaction ot serving The students and The school. ' Its most important yearly proiect is The awarding of The Harry Hayes Smith Scholarship Fund. In The past years This Scholarship has been given To Bob Campbell, Allen Powers, David Apple, and Ronald Walkington. The Faculty Service Club raises money for This Scholarship Fund by presenting a play each spring. The members ot The organization direct, act, and produce The plays themselves. Their productions in The past years have been Mr. Barry's Etchings, Tish, and A Visit To a Small Planet. The club also sponsors a book fair in The fall. In recognition ot its services we dedicate this T959-1960 Oiler to the Faculty Service Club. K Q fell 5 2 1 i : ff ff ,,f ,Q 4,-7 53 I! it fi! va S -w. .11 3 2 , fbi? ia. Cinderella's fantasy land was the setting for the thirty-second crown- ing of the Harvest Queen. With great anticipation the royal court waited for the arrival of the new queen and her royal maids. The maids who arrived first were the Misses Pamela Greenshields, Carmen Allen, Leslie Sparks, and Kathleen Fiegenbaum. They were escorted to their pumpkin thrones set amid twin- ing green vines. Finally the magic hour arrived and Miss Sally Jo Allen was summoned to the royal court to take her throne as the new Queen of the Harvest. A tremendous ovation was given Her Maiesty as she accepted her crown and graciously bowed to her subiects. She was then escorted to her glass slipper throne to begin her reign. The Wood Cats, the marching band, choral ensembles, and court iesters provided entertainment for the queen and her court. ,2 '. -ei' 1 5x ,fp x.,w . N K . . lx - K 1 V. .1 K ' fi Tu 'iw-Q55 5-T. OILER STAFF Have you ever wondered what kind of dilemma goes on inside the art room where your yearbook is organized? In case you have, the following will give you a brief glance of what the staff does to get the yearbook to you. To put a yearbook together requires the use of various groups which have their own special iobs to perform. The Organizations and Activities Staff schedules pic- tures for clubs and various groups, the Writing Staff writes about the activities of organizations in the school, the Classes Staff sorts student pictures into their right groups, the Art Staff designs the cover and divisions between the pages, the Sports Staff organizes the athletics section, the Photography Staff takes pictures of clubs and social and sports events, and the Business Staff sells ads to merchants to help pay for the yearbook. If you can picture these staffs in the art room at the same time, then you can see the correct usage of the word dilemma. The most frequently asked question is, Where is the dummy book? lWhich is the model of what the finished Oiler will look like.l Between the lost dummy book, lost pictures and articles, the yearbook still meets its deadline. This same situation probably happened to the first yearbook staff, which was in l924, and will probably happen to all future staffs. Good luck, future staff members! Adviser: M. The Oilers had some of their worst breaks at home with almost every game being played in the mud. However, they managed to whip the Jerseyville Panthers by a score of 26-20. ln the first quarter, after a 34-yard drive, Larry Priest recovered a fumble in the Jerseyville end zone, and Clark Miller ran the ball for the extra point. Because of their weaker foes, the Oilers were able to move the ball at any time they wished. However, Jerseyville's Roger Gross intercepted a pass from Larry Feezel for the first Panther touchdown. Then, the Oilers came back in four plays to send Larry Hin- son over the goal line from the two-yard marker. During the second half, the Oilers were still going great guns as Clark Miller broke loose from scrimmage to run 69 yards for a touchdown. The Oilers now led 20-13. Another scoring drive was put together by the Oilers and Hinson again cracked over from the six yard line. All during the while, when the Oilers were on the defensive side of the ball, spectacular tackles were continuously being made by John Heck. Even though the Oilers only won one out of nine games this year, the hard- playing and hard-fighting Juniors will be at full strength in l960. N. 3 .V 1-4 1 2 Q . . 5 . ,. 'iF P5 , , 4 N- ' ' '1-. Even though they only won three games and lost four, they continually put forth their best efforts. To prove this, thirty-two out of the thirty-three boys on the team received letters. The boys will well remember the game played against the Edwardsville Tigers. It all started at the half. The team was losing by a large margin when the horn sounded. During the break, Coach gave them a do it or else pep talk. Confidently, they marched onto the field and made a startling comeback, tying the score. The squad was very much at ease and feeling splendid. Then, when the ball was snapped by Edwardsville in the last F RESHMAN SCORES : Oilers 20 -c-. ........... ,----Southwestern 6 Oilers 7 .a....s.ass...a..... What they did not know was that the ball had been snapped before the gun had sounded and that they had left John Kassak on the field running after the ballcarrier, all by himself. And, iust as John neared his heels, the Edwardsville boy stepped across the goal line, winning the game 'I2-6. This mistake cost our freshman squad a football game and a temporary loss of pride, however, they came back to win their next game against Roxana 26-25. With this lesson came the practice that will make this group of boys the Varsity Oiler Squad of 1962. The best individual perform- ance was Bill Brown's l2'4 pole vault. The outstand- ing event for the team as a team, was the Low Shuttle Hurdle relay race. In this race at the West Frankfort Relays, our team, composed of Dennis Bunting, Irv ln'skip, Jerry Hanner, and Roy Webb, placed first. Also, at these Relays, our Distance Medley Team, com- posed of August Sorgea, Bill Brown, Larry Reynold, and Larry Barry, raced hard to reach the finish line for a second place. Finally, to tie up the season, two trackmen rep- resented Wood River in the State Finals. These two boys were Dennis Bunting and lrv lnskip. Bunting's best record for the event which he went to State for, the High Jump, was 5'l l , lnskip's best record for the event he represented at State, High Hurdles, was l5.2. GYMNASTICS With the arrival of the new Juniors' physical education teacher, Mr. John M. Cates, a new sport is rapidly becoming popular. This new sport is called gymnastics, and it in- cludes such things as: excersises, calisthenics, and acrobatics. Because it is a great activity and is providing loads ot fun for its participants. Since this is the tirst year ot any such sport ot this kind, the boys in the Gymnastics Club have been visiting Roxana High 'School to watch their team work-out and to get some pointers from some old pros. Already Coach Cates says that we are ahead of Roxana in tumbling, but that the stunts on the horse, the trampoline, and other equipment takes time and practice. On the calendar for this school year: A visit to a gym- nastics meet at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale . a trip to a gymnastics meet at the University ot Illinois . . . and a gymnastics exhibition to be given before the student body in an assembly this spring. And so, the Oiler Sports Department wishes you, Mr. Cates, good luck and continued success with your Gymnastics Citrix A. - if R K I l., x N: v M, K U .,-f ,, f. 1 TL 111,ls,--V Mel.. I ry A ,wsu Kienstra: The big s-t-r-e-t-c-h TENN S '59 BRINGS VICTORY This spring, Coach Favre Gould's Varsity Tennis Team, led by Captain Gary Ballard, began a promising season of twelve very difficult matches. Our Oiler netmen displayed considerable strength this year, especially in the doubles' teams. Also, even though the team was handicapped in many ways, the season was unusually good, near the middle of May, our Oilers played a thrilling match againt Western Military Academy of Alton winning 3-2. Likewise, four close matches were played opposing Roxana and Collinsville and were all lost 2 - 3. In District competition, Randy Kienstra was our repre- sentative in the singles' class. The Oilers first doubles' maestros, Gary Ballard and Gary Lane, swung the cat-gut to whip their competitors from Lebanon. Even though they fought and played hard, they were beaten by Belleville 3 - 5. The overall season record for the doubles team was: 8 matches won and 4 matches lost. The Varsity Tennis Team consisted of: Gary Lane and Gary Ballard, first doubles, Ralph Yakuboff and Mitse Kus- manoff, second doubles, Randy Kienstra, first singles, Gerald Magurany, second singles, and Stacy Hegeman, third singles. Substitutes for the team were: Tom Burke and David Gentry. With fall practice underway, Coach Gould is looking forward to even greater victories and more lettermen. BASEBALL SCORES With the opening of the 1959 season, the Wood River Varsity Baseball Oilers conquered the Bethalto Eagles 'l2 - 3. In the second game ot their season, the Oilers romped Edwardsville 8-4. Other high- lights of the season were: a 6- O win over Western Military Academy, a thrilling 4- 2 win over Roxana, an 8-2 victory over Bethalto, and a 2-O victory over Marquette. At the end of the season, however, it was evident that the Oilers played very exciting ball, since they broke clean with 9 wins and 9 losses. Tom Yopp and Gordie Hill both topped the '59 team with a .333 average. Hill led the team with 'l9 hits followed by Yopp with 16. Also, Dick Worthen chalked up decisive home runs in some of the close games. Hill, Worthen, and their team- mates all show great promise for our 'l96O team. Besides the induction of new members, the graduating Big Sisters were presented gifts by the other members. The Pledge Tea is held annually on a date close to Mother's Day. At this tea, the new pledges, the senior members, and their mothers are honored. BOW DAY N I On or near February 14, which is Valentine's Day, the Big Sisters conduct their annual Bow Day. This year was no exception. As a person walked down the hall, he was approached by a girl carrying a large stuffed animal which was completely covered with bows of all shapes and sizes. Usually he has no alternative, he just has to buy a bow. Indeed, Bow Day is a day that is filled with color and excitement, and we hope it shall continue through the years. In their first meet, the Oilers beat Granite City by a score of 71M to MM. A few weeks later, in a triangular meet, they rolled up 86 points to Jerseyville's 4OV2 and Assumption's TIM. During the season, however, there were many outstanding marks set by those rep- resenting our school in this sport. The out- standing feat of the year was Larry Berry's time in the mile run at the District Track Meet. There Berry was timed at 4:3O.l, to top all of the other entries by many seconds. Another single performance which brought distinction and honor to our school, was Loyd Grafford's running in the 220's 440's, 'l0O's, and 50's yards. Outstanding team performance was prevalent in the Oiler's mile relay entry. This team, composed of Sorgea, Braden, Webb, and Van Horne, ran the event in 3:35 for a new school record. Also, the 880 relay team shined when it 'composed of Miller, Braden, Graf- ford, and Van Horne, was timed at the West Frankfort Relays in 'l.33.5. As is the custom our queen, Miss Sally Allen, was the Virgin Mary. The three wisemen, George VanHorne, Larry Priest, and John Ebbert, brought the baby Jesus rare gifts of beauty. These two scenes were a part of the holy ceremony. CGRRECTICNS We neglected to state that Mrs. Hemp- hill now has her masters degree. The name of the head custodian, Mr. Stevens, was unlisted with his picture. The name of Mr. Dean Smith should be added to the list of the Board of Education. We are sorry that his name was unintention- ally omitted. We are sorry that the picture of Larry McVey was unintentionally left out of the Larry McVey Senior section of the yearbook. Distributive Education A very solemn occasion. Straighten those capsl BACCALAUREATE As is customary every year, the graduating class of Wood River High School participated in the Baccalaureate service held Thursday, June 2. The sermon was given by the Reverend Walter C. Burk, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Wood River. His topic was Turning Existence into Lite. The choir sang three songs in keeping with the religious setting. The songs were: The Lord Is A Mighty God, No Man Is An Island, and The Lord Bless You And Keep You. As the recessional started and the seniors passed from the auditorium for the last time, the memories of high school days passed through their minds. H The President of the Senior Class accepts his diploma from the President of the Board of Education. The great Class of l960l C ASS GF I960 Every student awaits the moment when he receives that all-important document, his diploma saying that he has completed his high school training. On Wednesday evening, June 8, 1960, the Senior Classof East Alton-Wood River Community High School realized this feeling of accomplishment. The Commencement exercises that took place on that evening was the forty-first to be held at the school. The 1960 graduating class was a very large one. The total number of members was 205. The program that was presented was very inspiring to all of the seniors. Reverend R. E. George, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Hartford, delivered the Invocation. Next on the program was the high school band, under the direction of Mr. Hughes, playing Rhapsody ln Blue. Mr. Ronald Wilkinson, President of the Senior Class, presented money to be donated to the fund for a new electric organ for the school. Dr. Robert G. Bone, President of Illinois State Normal University, gave a wonderful class address. Then the big moment arrived, the seniors received their diplomas from Mr. Thomas Holland, President of the Board of Education. This year's Commencement is one that will live long in the hearts of those present, especially the seniors who are taking that big step into this wide world. on OUI' Wdy Here we are to GRADUATION!
