N!. , R24 :IE R IGISCI Dedication The 1959 Oiler stati IS proud to dedicate its efforts to Mr. A. Edison Smith, who has devoted prodigious energy to the East Alton- Wood River Community High School. Mr. Smith has just returned from a year's leave of absence in Turkey and we are very happy to have him back. It is with deep and sincere gratitide that we say, Thank You. sv' IIIIIIIH il Energy is a powerful quantity. Unable to be destroyed, as shown by the furious scrambling in our halls, it transfers from activity to activity providing pleasant memories. In future years we shall be touched deeply by the remembrance of energetic days in school ----- our academic record, our extracurricular activities, and our social functions. These memories will live forever in our minds. The students of the present shall also be able to share in these wonderful recollections if they will use but one quantity, energy. f-'I , ww 1 L . Secretarial Practice and Personal Typing duaies Throughout the four-year cycle of a high school career, energy brings unhappiness along with happiness. But as the cycle grows to a close, all of the unhappiness is forgotten. Our exhuberant energy produces many happy events, culminating inthe happiest event of all ------ graduation. Energy expended throughout the four years produces the proud smile and warm beam of happiness on the senior's face. After the ritual of the graduation ceremony, the cycle starts over again, growing to a peak every fourth year. 9 l MQM Ewa? Her Majesty, Karen, bowed to her subjects as she graciously took her throne, behind which was a huge Japanese fan placed in an artistic oriental setting, The Wood Cats played sentimental tunes for the Queen and her maids, and the choral ensembles sang to the delight of the entire court. Majorelies The Marching Band of our high school was led this year by six eye-catching Majorettes. These Majorettes, wearing maroon coats, short, white pleated skirts, and maroon and gold top hats, performed during half-time at all our home football games. Wearing white shorts, white coats trimmed in maroon, and gold top hats, they also led our band in several parades including the Band guest day at Southern Illinois University. For these parades they wear their uniforms. The Majorettes are chosen from the band, Practice Makes Perfect Members of the Concert Band are hard at work in preparation for their annual Spring Concert. As guest of the high school band, the Wood River- Hartford grade school band will present several selec- tions. The grade school portion of the program will feature a flute solo by Debbie Hughes and a cornet solo by Lyndon Hammon. The high school band will present such selections as Busman's Holiday by Osterlingg Portrait of the Land by Quinny and Variations on a Folk Song by Schamman. A trombone trio, featuring Ned Coulson, Darrell Waters, and Dick Worthen will play Holiday for Trombones by David Rose. Someone's not playing Kay Big Sisier's Dance The Club Top Hat opened on November 29, 1958 in the girls' gym. Club Top Hat was the theme of this year's Big Sister's Formal Dance, As over one hundred couples entered the girls' gym, they were entranced by the almost unbelievably gay and scenic night club atmosphere. Couples were dancing to the dreamy music of Jim Adcock's band, At 10:30 the guests passed through the receiving line and were presented to Miss Buscher, the sponsor, and the various chairmen of the dance. Refreshments were then served. Dancing then continued until the magic hour of 11:15 when the Grand March began. This was certainly a perfect ending to a perfect evening. At 11:30 the Club Top Hat closed and, the Big Sister's ended another successful dance until next year. The aftermath of Christmas descended on the East Alton-Wood River Community High School in the form of bow day. This year the traditional bow was worn on February 13th. The yearly event is sponsored by the Big Sisters with the purpose of raising funds for various activities and charities that they sponsor. The charity receiving the money is decided upon by the members and the remain- ing amount goes to various activities repre- sented by the Big Sisters. Each Big Sister is required to sell one dozen bows. The prices range from five cents to one dollar, with the bows being displayed on gaily decorated hearts. There were many diffe- rent colors of bows--each cluster of ribbon having a different meaning which was explained by posters hanging in the halls. ... , ... ...- . . , , 1 sg k BACK ROW: Karen Wilson, Carolyn Pinkerton, Janet Hamilton Faye Ann Pees, Vera Leavell, Becky Skundrich, Betty Meyers Susan Hale, Kay Fiegenbaum. A modern medley by the Woodcats opened the stage production. Following this, Actlbegan withaselection of songs from the Broad- way musical, Kiss Me Kate, by the High School Choir. Dramatic students then took charge of the show with a scene whoops, here we go again from Sha.kespeare's play, Taming of The Shrew, depicting the meeting of Patruchis and Kate, the battling lovers. Following an intermission of twenty minutes, the Girls' Glee Club presented several songs from the Age of Shakespeare. Stage and Stammer is the first step in dramatics and it is the junior dramatics club for the students who would like to become Thespians. They hold their meetings every other Monday where they learn what goes on behind the well rehearsed scenes ofthe successful play, They learn about applying make-up, using props, drawing and building scenery, making costumes and lighting techniques, During the year they present several one-act plays of their own in addition to helping the Thesplans with most of theirs. The National Thespian troup, senior dramatic club of our school, has as its goal to the promotion of dramatics in our school. It provides enjoyment to and a challenge to each member on stage and back stage ability. National Thespian members, as well as acting in the plays, build scenery, find and handle props, make costumes, and put on make-up for the plays. To become a National Thespian, a student must first belong to Stage and Stammer, In addition he must earn a total of ten dramatic points representing 100 hours of rehearsals or work on back stage committees. The Thespian Troup meets once a month on a Thursday evening to discuss business matters and the dra- matics problem of the school, Thespian members complete each year various letters and awards. The highest is a best Thespian award given to one person each year. This is given at the annual banquet at the end of the year. But, the millionaire svnds word that she will have to defer her visit for a few days, What is to be done? The dear young thing must not be compromised but neither will the youths give up the opportunity of declaring their love. The problem is solved by forcing another Oxford undergrad- uate into a black satin skirt, a pair of mitts, an old-fashioned cap and wig. As Charley's Aunt then, this old frump is introduced to the sweetheart, to Jack's father, and to Stephen Spettigue. The Sweethearts hug and kiss Charleyls aunt: the two mon included. Then the real aunt turns up, assumes another name. In the chronic confusion which results, young Lord Balbuleygposing as the aunt, tricks Stephen Spettigue into agreeing to the marriage of his ward to Charley, the real aunt marries Jack's father, Jack gets Miss Verdun, and Charley's Aunt regains the fortune he lost at gambling and obtains the hand of the girl he loves. The Faculty Service Club Play Those wonderful faculty members! They did it again! For the third year the Faculty Service Club of the East Alton Wood River Community High School staged a full three act play for the purpose of raising money in order that the Harry H. Smith Scholarship could be awarded to a deserving student from our school. This club is the only organization of its kind which produces such a play for that purpose. The performance of this year was A Visit To A Small Planet by Gore Vidal. The comedy was presented on two nights, February 10 and 12, at 8:00 P. M. in the auditorium for the first time in this area. Theplay, whichran for eleven months on Broadway, was an uninhibited satire on the United States way of life. Kreton, a visitor from outer space, landed his space saucer in the yard of Roger Spelding, a Virginian Television News Comentator, expecting to see the Civil War. Kreton came from the fourth demension and therefore was able to go back into time, however, he made a mistake and landed a century too late. So that he wouldn't be disappointed, he attempted to manage the Earth people, his hobby, so that another World War would be launched. He came from a civilization where there were no problems. Every- thing had been perfected. His adjustment from that situation was amusing, as he attempted to understand the institutions and customs of the United States. Our Faculty Service Club members made an excellent cast with the help of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Mr. Wiley was the director and Mr. Claridge had the major role supported by Messers Samples, Gould, Brubaker, Sheahan, Grohovsky, Cozad and Scharf. Miss Fleming had the leading female role supported by Miss Vera Jones, and Miss Mildred Smith. 'Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, Mr, Wiley's siamese cat, had the role of Rosemary, The Club's goal was to raise enough money to award two scholarships this year. This highlight of the school year leaves us anticipating with expectation for another evening of good entertainment next year. Don't mug the camera, Roy! An unidentified flylng object, exactly what it looks like. dh Tickety Boo! Hit him harder! shouts Mr. Claridge. That's the way Miss Fleming, you break them up. Oh Rosemary! J.V. Basketball The Junior-Varsity Oilers, led by: Ron Wilkinson, centerg Gordon Hill and Wesley Tucker, forwardsg and Larry Feezel and Richard Baker, guards, had the best record in many years with 13 wins and 3 losses, for a percentage of .813. Leading scorers were Gordon Hill and Wesley Tucker. The J-V scored 1074 points to their opponents 873 outscoring them by 201 points. Hard fought losses went to Alton, Collinsville, and Granite City. From the looks of this year, the Oilers should be very strong next year because of the fine support the Sophomores have and will continue to give to the team. 119 120 Track During the '58 track and field season, the Oilers were led by these outstanding members: Ed Berkemeir, discus: Bill Brown, pole vaultg and the shuttle hurdle relay team which placed second in the Conference Relays. Wood River did very well in the Southwestern Conference Decathlon, while entering only two boys, Bill Brown who placed second and Irv Inskip who placed eighth. They managed to compile 8208 points to take third place in team scores. In the Southwestern Conference track meet Brown broke the Conference record of 12'-4 by vaulting 12'-5 1!2 and thereby breaking our school record, held by Bill Perrin since 1950. Brown also represented the Oilers at State for the second straight year and placed seventh in the State finals. Our track team will lose only one senior and will have eleven returning lettermen which will give us more power in the senior division next year. Hanner, Brown, Inskip, and Webb fight it outfor first. The Oiler squad was composed of only four senior lettermen, but came out of the season with a fine record, winning seven and losing five. The Oilers won two games in the Madison County Tournament before they were dunked by Madison 9-5.
