Recognize them? Of course! They're the Wood Cats. At rehearsals twice a week after school these blow hardsu really rock. The Wood Cats were organized in 1953. Their arrangements, ranging from Dixieland to modern jazz, are styled af- ter big name bands. The instrumentation consists of three alto saxes, two tenor saxes. one baritone sax, three trumpets. three trombones, a piano, bass fiddle. and drums. This past year these MCats ap- peared at all home basketball games. They also played for the Coronation, at pep assemblies. at several dances. and at various gatherings around the com- munity. Dircctor: Mr. Hughes Eighty-Nine Sally Allen, Ray Todd, Rich- Terry Williams, Paul Grenze- Ninety imp ,J yi The vehicle this year for the spry mem- bers of the Faculty Service Club was i'Tish, a lively play by Alice Chadwick. With a collection of a dozen different characteriza- tions, the amateurs were able to run the gamut of emotions. The plot, dealing with three well- ineaning. but nieddlesome old maids. permitted everybody to get in and out of sticky situa- tions by a quirk of fate or a quirk of the light switch. Staged in the popular Marenan style in the student center, the play ran for three nights. Good attendance contributed gener- ously toward the scholarship fund, the prime motive behind the Clubs activities. 'l'ish. Gridders Hove Foir Seoson Rough and steady are two words which best describe the type of football played by the '57 Oiler gridders to grind out a fairly successful 3 won, 4 lost, and 1 tied season. Team spirit ran high throughout the year, as displayed by the fact that our closing game ended in an upset for powerful Granite City as the Oilers won 6 to 0. A lack of returning lettermen gave junior members on the squad many opportunities to see action. Their contributions helped make our season successful in many ways. One of the most unusual games Oiler fans have ever witnessed was our season opener with Bethalto. Wood River scored four touch- downs. but had three of them called back on penalties. These penalties hurt, but not enough. We won 7 to 6. lContinuedl Une Hundred Five Another exciting game which provided itiany thrills was our Homecoming contest with Roxana. The game went scoreless into the fourth quarter. when Yopp recovered a fumbled Roxana hall on their one-yard line. This set us up for our lone touchdown, to which we added the extra point, leading the game 7 to O. Roxana retaliated with a touch- down of their own, but, to make the game more exciting, failed in their try for the extra point. However, an offsides penalty against the Oilers gave them another chance, in which they succeeded. The game ended in a 7-7 tie. Special mention should be made of fullback Don McMillen, quarterback, Alan Ferguson, and end Tom Yopp, all of whom received the Alton Evening Telegraplfs Player of the Week award. These boys provided a lot of pep and drive for this year's team. Mike Marko, Tackle, Co-captain Larry Moore, Center Bunting charges through gaping hole in Roxana line. Baseball Squad Boasts Strong Hurling Staff N Defeating Marquette 3 to 0 in their first game and bat- tering Alton 10 to O in their second game, the Oiler baseball team took first place in the District Tournament. Progressing to the Regional at Collinsville, the Oilers defeated Madison 3 to O but were defeated by Staunton in the finals 4 to 0 on a muddy field. One of the high points of the season occurred during the game against Lincoln. The score was tied 5 to 5 in the last half of the last inning. Oiler runners were on first and third bases, with two outs. The Lincoln pitcher balked, bringing in the player on third base to score the winning run and give Wood River a hard-won 6 to 5 victory. Darrell Otwell did a great job of pitching for the Oilers with help from the fielding of Paul Bryant, Roger Guffy, and Chuck Harris among others.
