Gridders Grind Goalward The Oilers played a rugged brand of football in '56 and compiled a successful season from several standpoints. Even though Coach Yocumis charges didn't win all their games, they still outscored their opponents. The Oilers scored 105 points in nine games as com- pared to 78 points for their opponents. Defensively, with such stalwarts as Torn Strumski, Lou Popelar, Andy Ventimiglia, Howard Miller, and ,lim Adcock leading the Way, the Oiler line trampled over its opponents to throw their backs for losses time and time again. Strumski and Ventimiglia added prestige to the team by winning certain awards. Strum- ski won state-wide recognition by being chosen by a Chicago newspaper as an end on the All Southern Illinois Team. Ventimiglia was chosen by his teammates as the most outstand- ing lineman on the squad and he was also picked by the Alton Quarterback Club as lineman of the week for the Alton-Wood River area. .g f ix!! , ' : , , ug., , ff .T A ' ff 4 'ef '55 , ,f 5. Jim Rhodes had his share of honors by being chosen back of the year by his team and being selected twice by the Quarterback Club as back of the week. Another high point of the season was the able replacements that were found for the starting halfbacks, Jim Yates and John Bosco, when they developed injuries early in the season. Alan Ferguson and Don McMillan came through with flying colors, especially in the latter part of the season. McMillan set up the only touchdown in the Jerseyville game bv making a long run deep into Panther territory. Ferguson averaged five yards per carry during the last four games and was outstanding in the Granite City game. He and Guard Mike Marko were chosen as next years co-captains on the strength of this year's perform- ance. Marko was outstanding as a defensive guard. Despite the fact that the Oilers won-lost record, 4 and 5, isn't impressive, they still had a very successful season in many respects. . gg ff L . 19 Q- fi 5 ,Q Q..,, if if K ' , . ff? Dressed in their very brief, but very cute costumes, they lead the'marching band at the football games, They also perform front-line duty on all parades in which the band marches. This year the Harvest Queen and three of the Maids of Honor were majorettes. Along with this pulchritude, however, goes talent. All are members of the school band. Yet, their chief claim to fame is the catchy dance step they do on several occasions to the tune of the Dark Town Strutters' Ball. As any- one can see by this picture, the majorettes are the main attraction of the band. SPONSOR: Mr. Chester Hughes 52' r w P, s f xfyf Y1 V YM -..?i5'w- K X I . The Melody Maids are the shrewdest to say the leastest. Not only are they an earfiulg theyare an eyeful. Sixteen of the prettiest maids from school charm their listeners with their gay tunes. Harmony, rhythm, and melody blend as the Choir, the top singing talent ofthe school, renders selections ranging from Basie to Bach. SPONSOR: Miss Vera ,loncs ns i WM Melody Malds MlX6d Ensemble N! Thespis, the founder of the drama, would roll over in his grave if he saw the plays sponsored by the National Thespian Society of our school. The Thespian productions are a far cry from those of Thespis. To avoid misunderstanding ofthe above, it should be explained that the Thespian or- ganization is credited With producing much better dramas than those of Thespis, which were presented and carried from place to place on a cart. A total of ten points is required for membership. These points are earned by partici- pating in plays and backstage committees. Each point represents ten hours of hard work. Only members of Stage and Stammer may apply for membership in National Thespians. Thespis and his cart would have to move on if they trundled near here. Radiomen Seek Ham Permits An organization new to this school is the Oiler Radio Club. The members of this club are seeking their ham licenses which will permit them to send radio messages over the ama- teur bands to any spot on the globe. Before getting a ham license, a member must first get the novice license, a special license designed for young hams. At last count, two Club members, Don Keber and Sam Guccione, had their ham licenses. Since the club was late getting started, its activities have been limited, but, besides learning the International Code in preparation for their tests, the members toured Radio Park in St. Louis. Next year, the Radio Club expects to get a high wattage sender and receiver and really ham it up. Pass the mustard, please. OFFICERS: Sam Cuccione, Don Keber, Jerry Messick.
