Lf A BASEBALL TEAM MAKES WPI L FINAL F0 X Wildcats make it to the W.P.l,A.L. playoffs again. Exactly 20 years ago the Wildcats were in the playoffs, and until now, they have not done it since. Twenty years ago, Mr. Peter Berletic took players such as Mr. Terry Bartges, Mr. Lee Svelebaiger, and Mr. Nick Sudzina to the playoffs. Now it is Mr. Chuck Matsko with players such as Chris Berger, Todd Kelly, and Darryl Pederson. But they are not alone, other contributers to the team stand out. Chris Leonard, catcher, had much team spirit and did what was needed at the plate. Ray Milke, center fielder, always came through with his outstanding catches. Mark Getsy, pitcher, also gave 110070 in the outfield. Billy Turkowski, pitcher, was rated one of the top five in his division with 83 strikeouts. Dude Ponitz, second baseman, despite his injury came back to play errorless baseball. Doug Brown, right fielder, had more than his share of hustle and dedication to the team. Besides starters, players such as Bill Gibson, Ray Leith, Dave I-Ieckenstaller, and Bob Slepsky, contributed a great deal in the playoffs. Other players like Joe Jurich, Gene Morrone, Chaz Brncic and Mickey Janosko were vital assets during the regular season. The 1984 Wildcat Team defeated Steel Valley 3-2, Latrobe 3-0, and Butler 4-1, in the quarter finals, but the team was defeated by Shaler 2-0. They moved on to a consolation game with North Allegheny and lost 6-1. The team, lead by Todd Kelly and Chris Berger, finished with a 12-9 record, which ranked them 14th in the state and 4th in the W.P.l.A.L. The 1984 PAWPRINT staff and the rest of the student body commends and congratulates the Wildcats and wishes them much succes in the future.
