Because the team was a combination of an equal number of all classes, freshmen swimmers were able to learn from the upperclassmen and have prepared themselves for next year's season. Beth Bergen, one of our finest underclassman swimmers swam her way to State Competition and made a fine showing. Rigorous training and skill helped to make this year's team one of the best ever. Midway through the season, the team looked as if it could post a winning season. Strong opposition, though, did in that hopeg but the runners managed a respectable record. The team's captains, Kevin Connelly and Jeff McKivens were the team's best runners. Kevin narrowly missed qualifying for the State Finals, loosing out by a foot. The loss of Bruce McGrew to injuries also greatly hurt the team, for he was one of the top runners. Dave Joyce and Kevin Connelly at a typical practice for Cross Country. Girls Cross Country E. The Lady Wildcats were led by eighth grader Diane McGrew and coached by Mr. Daryl Mori. Throughout the season the team gained important experience and skills 'to help them in thier varsity careers. Under the direction of Coach Daryl Mori the Junior Varsity members displayed the skills and basketball attributes that will make them a good varsity team in years to come. With the determination to improve and the skills they have accumulated through much hard work this year, the Junior Varsity was very competitive. The team played 'imany close games, and with a little luck, could have recorded a winning season. However, the main ingredient for a Junior Varsity team is the visual concept of improvement and this was readily visible in this 1982 edition. Players to watch in the future include Nancy Lesko and Marijo Curran lboth good shooters and ball handlersl, high leaping Trish Vaugh ta possible section rebound leaderj, and Linda Robinson tgood shooter, finesse playerj. With another year of experience this J.V. team can blossom into a fine Varsity squad. Pretty face strikes again. Nancy in action Girls Varsity Basketball 1 A A , - 1 ,v . The Lady Wildcats were one of the hardest working teams in the history of EA. Girls Basketball. During pre-season competition, the Wildcats posted impressive offensive and defensive statistics in wins over Monesson, Peabody, South Hills, and Derry Area in the Holiday Tournament. However, many intangibles are needed for a winning season, and when the Section 1OAA wars came, the team went into a bit of a tailspin. Four losses were decided by a few points. Tanya Clanagan, averaging 14 points per game, was a fine offensive weapon. Her offensive output was counted on throughout the season. Lisa Dawn was the most improved player. As the season progressed, she became an effective offensive weapon as she gained confidence. Nancy Liput's consistent strength added a steadying influence to her club. Her 9 points per game, power moves on the basket, and superb rebounding were indications of her being a very good player. Connie Howard was a hard working player that did a fine rebounding job. Her aggressiveness was important. Jennifer Shaw was a total team player. Sacrificing her offensive output to others, she led the team in assists. Averaging 7 points a game, she was the quickest ballhandler on the team. Jennifer also led the team in the defensive steals. 60 Mr. T, 3313 the game plan. Jenny blocks the opposition. The Freshman Basketball Team demonstrated their playing capabilities this year. Under Coach Sample, the team worked and played hard to ensure that EA. would have a fine varsity team in the future. The boys prepared themselves for future years by playing against many top high school teams. With Coach Sample's constant aid, the Freshman Basketball Team has proven to be a hope for the future. The Varsity Basketball team had a record of two wins and twenty-three losses this season. The team was under the direction of Mr. Bon Regrut. The team's two wins came against Thomas Jefferson and Yough. The team worked hard, but could not find a winning combination. The team has seven returning lettermen and should do well next year. Each student is assigned a child which allows the students to learn more about little people as well as themselves. While both students and children have tun, both go through a special learning process. Lunch time A future architect develops his skills early. On a South Sea Island during the Second World War, Nellie Forbush, a young Navy nurse from Little Flock, meets and falls in love with a handsome, middle- aged Frenchman named Emile de Becque. De Becque is a planter who has lived on the island for 25 years. He asks Nellie to marry him, and she promises to consider his proposal. Also stationed on the island are sailors., seabees, and marines. The chief hobby of these men is to collect souvenirs. A rivalry has developed between Seabee Luther Billis-who has cornered the market in everything from grass skirts to shrunken heads-and Bloody Mary, his Tonkinese competitor. A handsome, young marine, Lt. Joe Cable, arrives on the island and attempts to persuade de Becque to accompany him on a secret mission. The island commander asks Nellie to attain all the information she can about the French- man. Meanwhile, Joe Cable sails to the mysterious island of Bali Ha'i. There Bloody Mary introduces him to Liat, her beautiful daughter, and they fall in love. Nellie is confused about her feelings for Emile and tries to forget him. However, he invites her to a party to meet his friends. She is perfectly happy until she learns that the two half-Polynesian children are Emile's, and that their mother was a native. Nellie cannot accept this and runs from Emile. At the same time, Joe Cable, despite his love for Liat, is caught in a similar trap of his own prejudices, and he refuses to marry her. Emile agrees to accompany Joe on the mission because he feels that all he cares about is lost. They are successful for a time, but then they are discovered, and Joe is killed. Emile returns safely to find that love has triumphed over prejudice. Nellie is waiting for him with his children. 95 'g'f'ts, Came' , Acfioril Billie tries to make a deal with Bloody Mary. Hello Dad! 1 t Lasting Memories We have had countless times and places to remember, Unforgettable shared laughter and tears, People we have watched come and go in our lives, Are remembered by the thoughts they left us. Working together as a whole, we have brought many victories. Special times shared with special people leave beautiful memories. They have all gone so quickly, but will last forever in our hearts. As we put on our gowns of Black and White, We will again march together, Each with our own memories and thoughts of the future. We look back with remembrance and forward with wonder, For if those few years that went so quickly held somany treasured memories, We can only wonder what the new years ahead will bring us. it t g Qt 'vlfm . Box full of memories, Reflect the life i've led. Photographs and ribbons, Certificates and such, Ticket stubs and programs, All that mean so much. Cards and invitations, Keys to things i've lost, Poems and verses i've written, Into the box are tossed. Carton full of keepsakes, Someday l'm sure we'll part, But the fondest of all my memories, Are safe within my heart. Kelly Woods Being Editor-ln-Chief of the 1982 Pawprint has truly been an experience. Like anything else, it has had its ups and downs. What. l will remember most though, is how the people on the staff worked together to get this book finished. It was a comfort to me to know that there were a few people I could always depend upon. A problem that the staff faced was getting the book started. Finding a sponsor and having the School Board choose a responsible publisher made it impossible for the staff to get started before Decemberg but somehow, the problems were all forgotten when deadlines were met, and the book was finished. Although being Editor-In-Chief has had its hardships, it has also had its rewards. One of the rewards was realized when the proofs were returned, and l could see how the staff's hard work turned out. I would like to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Cadwallader and lvlr. Stewart. They worked with us on layouts and copy, and Mr. Stewart organized fund-raisers and subscription drives to help make this book a success. They made my job much easier. Finally, l would like to thank the Student Body, for this book is made for you. As you look through this book in future years, I hope it will bring back fond memories of your stay here at East Allegheny. Lisa Cifra Editor-ln-Chief
