Jeff Campbell returned to Earlville from the gates of Heaven on his mission from God. As Jeff entered Earlville, he soon realized that his former home town had undergone many changes. This once little town had become a suburb of the expanded LaSalle-Peru. As Jeff came down Route 34 he noticed that the Manor Steak House was still there so he decided to go and investigate and hopefully find some information for his mission. As soon as he walked through the door he was greeted by a beautiful middle-aged woman. This hostess seated Jeff and asked if there was anything that she could help him with. Well, Jeff, being an angel, knew that this hostess was the former Amy Wold, yet was not certain if his old classmate recognized him. “You don’t recognize me, do you?” Jeff asked. “Of course I do!” responded Amy. “You’re Jeff Campbell. After all, it’s only been 15 years since we’ve seen each other. You haven’t changed that much! What have you been doing with yourself all of these years?” “You’re not going to believe this, but. after Bob Cronin became an Illinois senator, I became his bodyguard. Did you hear about the attempt on Bob’s life?” “Yes I did! 1 can’t believe it. It was right after he announced that he was running for President, wasn’t it?” “Yeah, did you also hear about the death of his bodyguard?” Jeff answered. “Yes, what are you trying to say?” “Well,” Jeff started, “I’m that bodyguard. See, after I died I was on my way into heaven when I was stopped at the gates by God himself, who actually did turn out to be Mark O’Dell, and was told that I must go on a mission before I entered the pearly gates. This mission is to reform the Class of 1985 of Earlville High School. That’s why I’m here right now!” “Wow, that is unbelievable! Is there anything I can do to help you out?” “Definitely!” Jeff exclaimed, “You can tell me what you’ve been up to and what our other classmates have been doing. I know that Bob’s running for President, Chris Finnel is running as his Vice-President, and Marty McGlasson is their campaign manager. Oh yeah, Chris was recently accused of a tax evasion!” “Sounds like a personal problem to me,” said Amy, “I’ve been keeping in touch with a lot of people from our class, so I do know what’s happened to them. First of all. I’m now the hostess at this lovely restaurant and I just got divorced from what I thought was my only true love, Lee Coby, the organ player here at the Manor. I’m also caring for the former hostess. She became quite ill when Steph Leonard, who was like a daughter to Lucille, quit working here to go to college at Western. By the way, she’s now teaching there. Her two favorite students are her cousins Tim and Tom.” “So she’s been pretty much of a success, right?” Jeff asked. “Yeah, she's followed the straight and narrow white lines to success. Let’s see. who else? Well, Amy Goodbred is now married to a cattle rancher, Sam ‘Snake Eater’ Martino, who is known for his fat cows. She teaches Indian children but hopes to some day teach special education students. Speaking of special ed. students, that makes me think of Tim Landers! He was a stock broker until the stock market crash of 1995. Now he designs, owns, and operates ‘Tiny Tim’s putt-putt golf courses.’ I think he also runs a babysitting service on the side.” “Yeah, I understand that quite a few people in our class run babysitting services on the side. Jeff said, “Oh well, it’s an easy way of making money! Who else is there? “Well, Dorothy Schmall is a player in the American Women’s Basketball Association of the Chicago Amazons team. However, I think she was recently kicked off the team because she was caught fixing the games. You see, she could not stand losing anymore after her one season on the girl’s basketball team in Earlville. Judy Gaddy is also in Chicago. She’s working at the Playboy Club with Chris Myers, a photographer at the club. She was chosen Playboy Bunny of the year by Lonnie Stout, who has taken over Hugh Hefner’s reign as Playboy King out in California. Ron Wald is also out in California. He’s the new bass player for the rock group ‘Wicked Brothers,’ formerly known as ‘Twisted Sister.’ He frequently sees a former teacher of ours, Mr. Hess. He’s president of their fan club. Remember Margaret Messer? She’s Wicked Brother’s biggest fan and follows them everywhere! Steve Osborne is also a fan of Wicked Brother’s, but is too busy with his patients to be running around with a rock band. He runs the Beverly Hills Gynecology Clinic. The last I heard about Tom Davidson is that he is a monk in a monastery in California. He is living happily in silence and celibacy.” “Sorry to interrupt, but what has happened to Jim Cronin? I figured you two would still be seeing each other.” Amy replied, “I would rather not talk about it. All I know is that he is the new president of Ford Motors. I can’t believe he is actually competing with Lee lacocca. Speaking of Ford Motors, Diane Fiste is helping Jim design the new Ford Dippy-Mobile. She was an International Accountant until she was caught embezzling money. Diane’s no longer a Fiste though, she is now a Kirby. She’s not the only one who got married. Helen Visco married some Greek tycoon and lives in Florida. They just got divorced and she receives millions in alimony. However, she sends most of this money to John Eager, her only true love. Helen is supporting him until his father dies so that he can inherit the farm. John is STILL working under Joel Zimmerman. His close friend, Richard Jones, is selling customized V.W.’s that are personally designed and spray painted. He started this business after being released from the Air Force. Jim Joslin was working with Rich but received many bad muffler burns and had to quit. He now stays home with his wife, Cari, and their 17 children that they rent out for scientific experiments. “17 kids!!” Jeff exclaimed, “Well, Jim learned something in school! What happened to everyone else? “Well,” Amy answered, “Brent, or should I say ’Lightning Brent’ Bonine, is doing quite well for himself. His dream of becoming a world famous chef has come true by owning and operating Le Pink Dip. He is known across the country for his boiled chicken legs and beautiful hostess Madame Eich. I’m afraid Kris Hardin hasn’t done so well. For 5 years she seemed to be happily married to her old flame, Allan Wold. Then one day she took off to follow her new love — Bob Trump and his cult.” “His cult?” Jeff asked. “Oh yeah,” Amy explained, “Bob leads a cult group of Hare Kristinas and rides around town in his red flash — the duster.” “Did that loser Rusty Torman ever make anything out of himself?” Jeff asked. “You haven’t heard?” Amy said, “Rusty is considered a Math Genius across the world since he came up with the Torman-Hero’s formula. It’s strange though. You can still see him running around town doing odd jobs for his former math teacher, Kathy Eager. Jim Lockard also turned out to be a real math whiz. He is now the Professor of Accelerated Math at I.V.C.C. He stayed single, but frequently dates some of the Freshman students there. Another person at I.V.C.C. is Carrie O’Dell (Crabb) — because she has been writing Harlequin romances based on her experiences with her husband Brian. Now let me see ...,” Amy continued, “Have I forgotten anyone?” “Hey, what happened to Rock?” Jeff asked. “How could I forget Tony? Not to mention Angie. Well, the last I heard, Angie was running a work- out clinic for dumb jocks who don’t want an ounce of fat on their bodies. And Tony — we’re so proud of him — became a successful poet and philosopher. You see, he was sitting in room 21 at the high school, pondering over the question — ‘Why’ — when he was enlightened with his most famous poem — ‘Memories of Prom’. It was so popular that we all know it by heart.” “Boy. it really must be good! Let’s hear it.” Jeff said. Amy recited: THERE WE WERE IN OUR DRESSES AND TUXES PLAYING “GROWN UP” AND ACTING LIKE PUPPETS. PROM WAS JUST A FARCE, BUT TO ME IT WAS MORE FUN THAN PLAYING HOUSE. OUR EXPENSIVE NEW CLOTHES AND RIBBONS AND BOWS MADE US LOOK BETTER THAN A LONG-STEMMED ROSE. PRETENDING TO HAVE MANNERS AT THE BANQUET AND DANCE MADE US ALL WISH WE HAD ON SHORT PANTS. TO THESE MEMORIES OF PROM I HEAVE A HEAVY SIGH; JUST ONE WORD RUNS THROUGH MY HEAD. AND THAT’S ‘‘WHY?’’ “Are you serious?!”, Jeff exclaimed, “That sold! And everyone in our class liked it? 1 think our class needs more help than I thought!” Just then a bolt of lightning flashed, and Mark O'Dell appeared. Mark! ’, Amy exclaimed, “What are you doing here? Jeff told me that you gave up nursery school that you were running to become God!” Yeah,’ Mark answered, “this is just another notch on the belt. Actually, I came down to talk to you, Jeff. I think I better put you on a different mission. I’m afraid this idea to save the Class of 1985 is just AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK!!” 79 THE END SENIORS 1985 SENIORS 1985 J SENIORS 1985 SENIORS 1985 SENIORS 1985 SENIORS 1985 Amy Lynn Goodbred Kristine Caroline Hardin Richard Brian Jones James O.
