Having never played in the conference, the girls didn't know what to ex- pect . After facing Huntley on Sept. 29, however, the girls found that the competition in the conference was far above that in the Little 10. Most of the Little 10 teams played ' 'bump ball'', but the Little 8 teams played real volleyball- bump, set, spike. I think it's stuck! By the next week, their skills had progressed, and Wheaton had to struggle to win. The highlight of the season was the J.V. match against the un- defeated Richmond Rockets. After losing the first game 1 - 20, Earlville came back to win the second game 20-13, and took the third game 22-20. The season was long, not vic- torious, but the teams were the best yet at E. H. S. Homecoming 77 Volleyball - New Homecoming Activity ' 'The Games People Play11 was the theme chosen by the Student Council for the 1977 Homecoming Activities. Each day of Home- coming Week and each class float centered on a game. Strange faces and funny costumes brightened the halls, with Marilyn Thayer and Denise Ridge capturing the prize for best costume on 1 'Don't Clown Around Day.'' Appropriately enough, they were dressed as comical football referees. Late Tuesday night, some unknown clowns ' 'torched'' the woodpile that had been collected for Thursday night's Bonfire. Luckily enough, the Student Council was able to rebuild the woodpile for the big pep rally, which was preceeded this year by a first-a Homecoming volleyball game against Burlington. After the game, the Bonfire got underway, and even after the loss of the game, the students' spirits were high. Friday's bad weather put a damper on the parade. Not totally, though, for the Senior float made the parade for the first time in three years. The game proved exciting, with the Raiders losing by only one point. High spirits prevailed at the dance, and everyone seemed glad to be in out of the rain. Mary Beth Norton and Scott Tuftee were chosen as Homecoming Royalty. Fire Up . . . The Madrigals attended contest in early March, and paved the way for the other groups by achieving a 1st place. In early April the high school Girls' and Mixed choruses attended the l.H.S.A. contest held at Spring Valley. Although it was the first time in years and Earl- ville chorus had partici- pated , both received first place ratings also. The Junior High Mixed chorus received a second place rating, but were compli- mented on their enthusi- asm. 74 ADMINISTRATION E.H.S. Welcomes New Superintendent The Earlville schools underwent some changes this year with the arrival of Mr. Avery L. Wilson, the new Superintendent of Schools. Coming from Mo- mence, Illinois, Mr. Wilson knew quite well how to deal with some of the problems that arise in any school. Together with being a good administra - tor, Mr. Wilson was very well- liked by everyone at E.H.S. 76 Mrs. Helen Hill, Secretary to Superintendent 77 Mrs. Margaret Larabee, High School Secretary Board Of Education They Do The Cookin9 And Cleanin 9 1. Starting at 9 a.m. , the girls got in 12 hours of playing, with the hope of raising enough money to send them to camp at Illinois State University, Bloomington. The girls had their choice of attending either of two ses- sions , one held in June and one in July. The girls were up against competition that was nowhere near the calibur of their regulation games, but, strangely enough, they won only a few games. The marathon proved to be long and exhausting, but it was worth every bit of effort exerted. With the money collected from pledges, the rental of the court, and the proceeds from a C.B. raffle, the girls collected enough money that each girl had to play only $20. 2. A member of Ted Fritz's team comes through with a good save that caught Earlville off guard. 3. The rules and regula- tions of the game were not quite as stiff as the girls were used to. 4. Will he catch it (illegal), or will he dink it back over the net? 1. Nice try ... but not good enough. 2. Although this return in- volved much concentrated effort, it seems the girls got in each oth- er's way, and missed! 3. Carol Schrecengost dinks one over to gain a point for her team. 4. Paw Paw Faculty 82 Everyone’s Trying To Get Into The Act 1. Mr. Guenther adds two points to our score. Our efforts just weren't enough, though, for at the end of an exciting double -overtime game, the score stood 88-86 in favor of Paw Paw. 2. ' 'Drive ... drive ... to the basket, to the bas- ket ... We Want Two! 3. Kurt and Randy are in charge of keeping the score, and not making it, for a change. 4. Coach Drengwitz attempts to full down another rebound for the E.H.S. facul- ty. 5.
