Creating . .. Crafts ... Clay Ski Trip Highlights Year Through the keyhole, the girls' P.E. class- es were seen doing the usual -- volleyball, soccer, flag football, badminton. But, also seen was something new and different for E.H.S. -- snow-skiing. Mrs. Mickelson took the girls on an all-day field trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. After a two-hour bus ride, the girls were enthusiastic, and ready to get started on the slopes. At first there were, of course, a few tum- bles, but after a few tries most of the girls got the hang of it and did quite well. Everyone enjoyed herself, and as there were no serious injuries, the trip was a complete success. Paddleball Team The boys' physical education classes, taught by Mr. James Drengwitz, involved many of the same activities as the girls'. The classes even got together for an oc- casional co-ed volleyball match. Just as the girls got the new experience of skiing, the boys were introduced to another growing sport -- pad- dleball. Along with the many involved and competi- tive games played in P.E., an all-school paddleball tournament, won by Senior Jerry Imel, was held in the spring. Through The Keyhole . . . Drift Delicious Aromas A phrase heard quite frequently from the girls in Home Ec. was: All we do is take notes! But from the whirring of sewing machines to the delicious aro- mas that crept under the door and through the keyhole, others around E.H.S. could tell that a lot more went on in the Home Ec. room than note-taking. Notes were taken, but out of the Home Ec. room came many needed garments, and some- times not-so-needed food. Miss Kim Calhoun, Mr. Robert Thayer, and Officer Owen Finnegan joined in the fun, giv- ing those who wished to get revenge the oppor- tunity to do so. The Homecoming activities kept all Council members and most of the student body on their toes. The bonfire, dance, and coronation of the Homecoming royalty all added to the spe- cial event. The Council decided that, instead of the usual Honors Banquet, the honors students would be treated to a trip to Old Chicago amusement park in Bolingbrook. The most important de- cision of the student government was that of the adoption of a new attendance policy. 64 Librarians Hold Key Posts Members of the Library Club performed many of the jobs that the librarian does as an aid to Mrs. Lorene Thayer, head librarian. They worked in the library during their free periods doing such things as check- ing books and magazines in and out, typing file cards, and running the audio-visual study aids. In addition to this, some members video-taped the high school athletic events so the athletes could watch themselves and learn from their mistakes. 1977 Yearbook Staff The Key To Completion Is Perseverance More knowledge and understanding of yearbook production were provided by the American Yearbook Company through a work- shop held at Rockford College. Editor Cindy Whittaker, Assis- tant and Copy Editor Marie Schrecengost, Photo Editor Pam Torman, and Photographer Don Myers attended the workshop, held in the first week of August, to gain the knowledge needed to produce a better book. All went with very little knowledge, but as the days progressed, they learned quite a lot about year- books. On the first day, Don explained to the photography in- structor that he didn't even know how to load the camera, let alone take pictures! It seemed, however, that Don learned quite a bit the first day, for that was when his prize-winning photograph was taken. Days were spent in the lecture hall, taking notes and viewing slide shows. Evenings were work times, fun times, but, most of all, 'brainstorming times that sometimes lasted until all hours of the night. A banquet was held the final day of the workshop, and awards were presented for the best layout and best picture taken during the three days. Everyone agreed that the workshop had been worthwhile, and they couldn't wait to get home and start on their own book. Don Myers' Prize-winning Photo 67 From Concerts To Crepes The highlight of the French Club's activities was a trip to a French concert in Rockford. After some unfamiliar French folk tunes, songs such as Welcome Back, Kotter, Happy Days, and Dancing Queen were easily recog- nized by the audience, even though sung in French. F.H.A. Learning About The Home F.H.A.'s list of activities included the annual baby picture contest and the Daddy-Daughter Banquet. The baby contest sparked every- one's interest as they tried to fig- ure out what Senior belonged to what picture. Chosen as cutest ba- bies were Pam Robinson and Jim Einhaus. The Daddy-Daughter Banquet consisted of a meal and a very in- volved game of volleyball, during which the daughters tried to prove that father doesn't always know best, especially when it comes to volleyball. Sometimes both were experienced at the same time, for even though it was agonizing to come out with the losing score, the skill and enthusiasm shown by our teams was quite thrilling. The Red Raider basketball team underwent a complete change this year. It took the Raiders several games to get the hang of the defense introduced by Jim Dreng- witz, the new head coach. Once they got the offense together, however, it seemed their defense fell apart. Although the won-loss doesn't show it, the Raiders had, in many ways, a fruitful season. Many outstanding personal efforts were made and both coaches and play- ers learned a lot about each other. 1976 - 1977 EARLY ILLE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' ATHLETIC AWARDS SOCCER Most Valuable Defensive Player Most Valuable Offensive Player Most Valuable Offensive Player Red Raider Award Hustle Award 1976 Tri-Captains VOLLEYBALL Most Valuable Player 1976 Co-Captains Most Improved Player Hustle Award Serving Award 100 111 J.V. Even though it was quite early in the morning, the J. Novak Peppermint Patty's Premier Post-Game Party proved particularly promising and provided a proper panorama for the presentation of the principles of the evening — the Homecoming King and Queen. Promptly at 11:00 the candi- dates lined up for the procession to the throne. With background music provided by The Mis- fits, the crowning was pleasing to all present. Jerry Imel and Jean Olsen were selected by the student body as the 1976 Homecoming royalty. G. Gaddy J. Malkey J. Malkey J. Nielsen 104 Through the keyhole, the hustle and bustle of rehearsals for The king and I could be seen. A UPS strike delayed the arrival of scripts and scores, so auditions started two weeks later than usual. When the auditions were finally completed and the cast selected, only three and one-half weeks remained until the 8 p. m. curtain on November 21. However, with music rehearsals held in the cafeteria while the leading characters rehearsed their lines on stage, the play progressed quite rapidly. As the night of the performance crept closer, everything began to fall into place. Even though there were a few minor last munute emergencies, when the curtain rose, along with jumpy nerves and butterflies came the terrific feeling of success. 10S 107 teeome Weeks before Prom, the Junior class was busy planning and organizing for the big event. Having chosen the theme 1 'Fantasyland,1' there was plenty of Disney material on hand in the form of books, posters, and re - cords. When the planning was in the final stages, Snow White, Bambi, Flower, Thumper, and other Disney charac- ters begame bigger-than-life-size on colorful murals that would decorate the Banquet. Several paper-mache sculptures came to life as the finish- ing touches were painted on. It was Thursday night almost too soon, and a hurry up attitude seemed to hang in the air. Mickey Mouse began to take shape, along with jungles, mountains, and Cin- derella's coach. Friday the lobby of the gym was turned into a Mickey Mouse flower garden, with huge giraffes, an ele- phant, and a bear growing out of the floor. Saturday the Juniors were still work- ing diligently, and finally all seemed ready. After the Banquet Saturday night, couples entered the dance floor through the mouth of the whale that swallowed Gepetto and Pinnochio. The gym was surrounded with scenes from Disney movies. From Cinder- ella's castle to the Candyland punch stand, there was a feeling of fantasy. Young and old alike enjoyed the mu- sic of ' 'Sugar Flame,1' and the an- nouncement that Melissa Bagby had been chosen Prom Sweetheart ended the evening perfectly. 113 Graduation EARLVILLE AIRPORT AND R R FLIGHT SERVICE FLIGHT INSTRUCTION AIR CHARTER AIRPLANE RIDES FUEL AND SERVICES Airport Phone (815) 246-9870 Neil Bomstad Harold Carter Robert Goodbred Lyle Younglove 246-9809 246-9361 246-4822 539-7292 ONE STOP FOODS BERTS MEAT PROCESSING “We’d Like to Meat Your FYeezer” BERT and GLORIA HALSEY Phone 815-246-9018 Earlville, Illinois 60518 Complete Butchering Facilities Open 7 Days a Week Locally Raised Beef and Pork For Sale HOURS — Weekdays, 8 to 5; Saturdays, 8 to 12 Daily 7 AM TO 9 PM SUN. 7 TO 5 Beer - Wine - Liquor Fresh Meat G Produce TORMAN SONS South Ottawa St. HOME FURNISHINGS Earlville 246-4221 Carpeting — Vinyl Flooring Ted G Ardith Fritz, Owners PAW PAW AMBOY EARLVILLE 627-2711 857-2025 246-6481 (Area Code 815) MARONDE PHARMACY KALEEL’S COUNTRY PEDDLER Russell Stover Candy (since 1905) Film G Photo Processing clothing -- shoes Office, School, Artists' Supplies Earlville - dial 246-6771 105 S.
