MEMORIES LAYING THE CORNER STONE May 28, 1926 P 16 nc-:Mi 'A' I MEMORIES PROGRAM at Laying of Corner Stone Address Rev. John Gordon, Rockford, Ill. The corner stone of Earlville's new community high school building was laid Friday afternoon, May 28th, with appropriate ceremonies. The weather was pleasant and a goodly company, in addition to the school pupils, witnessed the event. The ceremony began at 3 o'clock when Rev. Henry Abraham gave the i11- vocation, after which Superintendent Taylor announced that a number of ar- ticles would be placed in the copper box that was to be sealed in the stone. gli? box was 4x6x10 inches in size and the memorials placed in it were as o ows: History of Earivine communitylnigh School--Margaret Bullock. The box was then placed in the stone and President Rayson of the board of education spread the first trowel of mortar in which the stone was set. The contractor, K. J. Mulder of Nokomis, then superintended the lowering of the stone into place where it will probably rest for generations. The members of the board and the speaker, Rev. John Gordon, then re- paired to the platform that had been erected. John A. Dupee, Jr., sang a solo and Dr. Gordon was introduced and spoke for about half an hour. His talk, of course, was directed mostly to the young people present, for whom the building was erected. Miss Esther Davis led in singing two verses of America, and the ben- cfliction was pronounced by Rev. Chas. Lyons. 17 ... L. J. QUAN'r1ncLl., Fmsi' Sl'I'ERINTl'lNDI'INT According to the l'History of LaSalle l'ounty, The first school was kept in Levi Carter's house by a lady named Hosfordf' This same history also records the fact that A. Van Namee came in 1843 and found the pioneer schoolhouse built, so that it must have been erected previous to that year. The exact location of this particular building has not been ascertained. There were several schools in this vicinity previous to 1850 and it may be that the Upionecr schoolhouse was one of the following group. School was held in a building where the Precinct Schoolhouse now stands. Un the site of the Alexander Hamill home on Ottawa Street another school was built. And classes were also conducted where Fharles Lincoln's home is built on his farm north of town. Just when the first building was erected on the grounds of the present school on Stilson Avenue is not known. But it is known that on the night ot' September 13, 1858, this practically new brick building was utterly demolished by an explosion of dynamite. About two years later another building was constructed, but in the mean- time the younger generation was not enjoying a prolonged holiday, for in- struction was given in several places about the town. A small house on the spot now occupied by the R. O. Dupee home, north of the track, rooms over 78 l l tw MEMORIES E 3 I FIns'I' BIIIIIIIING 1883-1900 Robinson's Drug Store, a house 011 Dr. Pieree's lot on Ottawa Street, all served as school rooms. Part. of the house now occupied by VVill Prentice and his family was at that time standing on the northeast corner ol' the Harrie Town lot and this was used in like manner. On the northeast corner of Ottawa and Winthrop Streets staIIds now, as then. what is known as the Brown building. lt was here that Miss Hattie Patterson conducted a private school. One of lIer pupils relates that Miss Patterson 's favorite form ot' punish- ment for a disobedient student was to snap him on thc car with a stiff piece of whalebonc. On page 108 may be found the picture of a group of girls who attended this school in 1858. You will note that one of the girls in the front row holds something in her hand. The girl is Bell XVarren tMrs. IC. S. Snowj who tells that oranges were scaI'ce in those days and that she had borrowed an orange to hold in her hand while the picture was being taken. In the fall of 1860 school was opened in the new two-room school house built where the brick one had stood. lt was a wooden affair having one room upstairs and o11e oII the ground floor. At two different times later tour rooms were added, and this six room building accommodated the youth of the com- munity until 1900. At that time part of this old wooden structure was moved to Main Street and is now used by Dr. 'Tillman for his office. It was not until the fall of 1883 that a regular high school was 0111211112011 under the fine leadership of L. J. Quantrell. This course of 'study offered only two years of work. In 1893 illld 1900 the third and fourth years of work were added to the course. Toward the end of the century it became obvious that the old building was no longer adequate either in capacity or equipment, and after two or three votings, the brick building that now houses the grades of Dist. 30-l was erected. In January 1901 the doors of the new building were opened. The following have served superintendents: Mr. Heslet, Mr. Hurd, Frank Hall, L. J. Quantrell, M. M. Alden, J. H. Morton, A. R. Moore, H. H. Earlville High School Alumni Association The Alumni Association of the lflarlville High School was organized on the evening of June 17, 1891, in the basement rooms of the Universalist Church, imniediately following the Commenccment Exercises of the class of 1891. Its charter members numbered twenty-nine. They were the members of seven graduating classes who had received diplomas from the Earlville High School, the first class gradulating in: 1885. The enrollment for the Alumni was made by Mis. tleorgia Kinney Davis, a member of the class of 1886. To her the association is indebted forthe secure foundation on which it was placed and on which it has rested ever since. The first president of the Alumni was Mrs. Davis. So far as can be as- certained no records were preserved for several years of the annual meetings, or of the names of oliieers who have served the association. The membership of forty class is 371, of whom 347 are living. Members are located in 22 difl'erent states of the Union, 368 are living in Illinois. The largest class is that of 1926 which added twenty-three members. The smallest class is that of 1887 whose only member was Agnes Atkinson. On the last page of Alumni records are entered the twenty-four names of those who early were called for promotion to the lite lllysian whose por- tals we call Death. The human mind can give no explanation for their early passing. We only know the Grim Reaper folded the young hands- hands whose warm touch we could not keep, close within his own and led them away. One of the twenty-four is a World NVar hero. Prof. John Thomp- so11 died in the service in October, 1918. Greater sacrifice than this hath no men made, than that they lay down their lives for their country.
