While a community demands interaction, the desire to be alone is never lost. To interact requires that one can also be alone and not interact. An outgrowth of Earlham is personal definition. The search does not have to be limited to anyone group or individual. Many in this community are in search of something. Some know what they seek, but not how to get itg others do not know what they are seek- ing. Defining one's reason for being is more than just finding a good jobg it is also why one exists. lf the community knows why it exists, it has not always helped its constituents to reason why they exist and what they muSl do. For Earlham, communicating with the larger world is sometimes easy. To the outside world, Earlham appears as an united community. Perhaps unintentionally, Earl- ham desires to appear unified to the rest of the world. Interacting with the outside-with reality -can be done in different ways. Political campaigns, visible demonstrations or violence are some of the means Earl- ham uses to distinguish itself from its immediate environ, Richmond. The Earlham concern for far-away places has if led to indifference about Richmond.
