ARTS U1 em First Lady Caricature of reality and the essence of reality: this paradox makes First Lady a successful play. First Lady wields political slapstick and satire. The women. despite political protocol. are the power-hungry. A gentile senator quips, YVell. suppose we leave the girls to mop up. A battlefield is no place for a diplo- mat. The men are not only dominated by the women. but also ignored by them. A contender for the coveted position of First Lady. Lucy Chase Wayne. bluntly admits. They ought to elect the First Lady and then let her husband be President. Lucy's ambitions. however. are matched by those of Irene Hibberd. whose cold stare and acid tongue are well-used political as- sets. The in-fighting rages. This pettiness and greed sketch a caricature of real politics. yet the sound of political skirmishes makes the very essence of reality. 25 Master Builder Who is this Nlaster Builder? Henrik Ibsen created him as Halvard Solness. a man who builds. First he builds churches with beautiful. high steeples. Yet he never climbs his steeples. Then he builds homes for people to live in. but people don't know how to use them. Finally he decides to build castles in the air. What kind of a man is Solness? He is a proud. selfish man. Ilis majestic power grips firmly a naive secretary and a talented apprentice. Yet a troll lurks in him: while nastily cruel and blindly self-centered. he lusts for the eupohoria of heights and the irresponsibility of life in a castle in the air. Hilda Wangel seduces from him this youthful, hedonistie troll. The Nlaster Builder climbs recklessly up the last home he will ever build. The troll raises its head. yet pushes Ilalvard Solness to his death. Perhaps castles in the air are not meant to be built by men who are builders, but by men who are trolls. 26 ll .psf f -,-.. ,az-uf' 27 The Eulpemi' jones The tom-tom thumps rclcntlcwly gh thi- Hmpcror ,loin-N Hu-N lm lxingduiii and in rchcllious hush iiiuucrxf' Tlw wund ix primiiiic. FS While Franz Lehar's The Merry XVidow was written in nine- teenth-century Vienna, the operetta has all the ingredients of a successful Broadway play. The plot is fragile. A light, misplaced tap of pensiveness may burst the colorful bubble of romantic intrigues, love scenes, robust bawdiness, and the happy ending. As long as Broadway's lights glitter and man's seriousness desires escape, will the frailty of such romantic frivolity live a strong and healthy life. 29 Merry Widoxx 9 ,4 - 3 ,, t CHI jean-Leon Destine Haitian Dance 30 Duke Ellington ,..- ,.,.-.M .wwf ,fl- f' W S Q, Wh., 0. In Tlireepenny Opera, Bertold Brecht carefully maintains an ironic tone, keeping a precarious balance between comic and tragic elements. Lucy and Polly are each in a painful emotional situation. yet the tone of the jealousy scene be- tween them is thoroughly comic. The plight of the heggars and whores is likewise pitiable, yet the seriousness of their condition is relieved hy their bawdy humor. Tragic or comic? Each person must finally answer this question for himsell. 40 Gm Em 6111 1' .n fir -'-V ,M 1 Z 5? ' 4 . M F! Oli, Ziewfil-41' ,sf ' 4 1. 4 A s . 5 . i It I. Q - it .lx , ,Q ax . x.
