This. the hest known of Earlhanfs traditions. required months of planning and work. Decorations. props. and costumes were prepared by students. together with faculty and administration. A sense of corn- niunity spirit was gained hy all who participated. Following a morning filled with final preparations. the students gathered near Carpenter to hegin the May Day procession to Comstock Field. Rains came. and the proces- sion was delayed. Students and spectators were entertained hy singers and players until the event could proceed. After the inile-long procession wore onto Comstock Field, the entire group hailed Queen lflizaheth who. according to tradition. was played hy the Presidentis wife. Elizaheth 'llUlI'lltlB was crowned Queen ul the Mayi' hy Robin llooflu Carry Thonias. Then the Queens Fooli' called for the Rerels on the Green to hegin. Fire maypoles were wound. and the entire company danced Gathering l'eascods and an Qld English circle dance. Special dances were performed hy Xlorris Xlen. gypsies and sword dancers. 'l'he final feature was a presentation of St, George and the Dragon. To honor the reappearance of the sun. the rcrelers again niade their circles and danced the All-ln. l7ollowlttg the rcrcls. the crowd of 5.000 persons wan- dered around the carnpus to see the Harpie eagles shown hy Falconer Jim Fowler and the plays: The Merry Men, of the Greenwood. The Reeveshy Sword Playf' Pyramus and 'l'hishe. Beatrice and Benedict. The Deluge. and The Punch and Judy Puppet Show..'7 That evening. Mask and Mantle presented Shakespeareis i'Antony and Cleo- patraf' as a sequel to Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra given during Second Term. Later. the Queen's Ball was held in the lfarlham Hall Castle. where the May Queen and her court were again presented. 1 l t t ,
