V 'E!1uNf- A ' there were moments of pathos and comedy. no one cared too much about sam, the homely mutt that hung around the cafeteria, until he was killed by an automobile iust before easter. students who felt they lead something of a dog's life were more than Q f Q sympathetic. sam was buried with elaborate ceremony. X ' ,X hack hatcher drove his model a like the near-sighted f Nx mister magoo. amused spectators learned to keep a X A respectable distance away when the antique was in motion v VH 'Z ' x l one of hack's favorite short cuts to richmond was the i XX serpentine. most students have paused a minute or I 3- -X 2 to watch earlham's tree barber, tom wilson. the Q I I ' T. l Ye . -X , , good old days when one could go through the caf line P E ,i for seconds passed with the issuing of meal tickets. 1 l Q J 5' now it's no tickee, no eatee and 50c for a new one if the original gets lost or goes through scrape line. 7 2 v students communicate with each other by fan mail, over the phone, through informal discussions, out of the silence of meeting .... there are times when all of them go on the blink - no letter has been in the box for days, lectures seem to be in greek, the commons conversation gets stale -- and then, charlie brown, you feel all alone, by yourself. usually a good night's sleep or a few hours of concentrated study restore connections. it not, there's ioe elmore I f I ll LX 'N-s A1 M G fn.. xh,v', I 5 10 I -Y. 'r 'itil 'Z T , gf it takes a heap o' livin' the first few weeks of school for freshmen who are iust settling into the social element to feel at home. there are all kinds of ice breakers to smooth the process of adiustment: name tags and maroon beanies, faculty-at-home parties, a president's reception, mixers and friendly smiles. during tri-day trials precedents members are the enemy and to be avoided at all costs. to upper classmen the initiates look younger than they did when they were freshmen . . . perhaps they're a bit more intelligent . . . and some of them aren't bad looking. if frosh only had the time, there would be a lot to write to the folks back home. M w-mm in ' aes-,f li, '4, if enthusiasm could win a football game the quakers' first game at franklin would have been a victory. frosh purposely left their beanies behind to make the day a more enioyable one, on the way the students brushed up on cheers and fight songs which they yelled over and over again during the game. the day was hotg the game was excitingg the score was so-soy the bus ride home . . . much quieter. 12 . .av - - f?'5:.a..fY , if - N D. c . ,.Si 'lf ,, . , . Ai E Q .,.V. , x lT'5gEe: '5 ' . 1 V W x' m xii i f 14 V f stuffing crepe paper through chicken wire, calculating the quakers' chances of beating taylor, and taking a wardrobe inventory for formal material are iust some of the ways students prepared for the homecoming festivities. the theme . . . great expectationsg the queen . . . lovely margie kingery the float contest winners . . . the froshg the main feature . . . lcindrum bolling's inauguration. in the athletic department the soccer team defeated i.u., but the gridders didn't quite come up to the crowd's expectations that afternoon. the long weekend was climaxed by a big dance that was a little later than usual because the inaugural dinner ran overtime. I5 ,1 .ff fx i'f' A AN' X J ff wvx ' 134 Q' Q .' 5 r 'f' :Sak 5- ,1 ,, X.-xx Q j, -A fl.: xg ' f ' v - 7 .-,fe K, as an aug. ,,, .YU- ..h 1 the - pox - ice and snow and the approaching holiday season justify winter social activity. impromptu snowball fights, ice skating at the new place behind earlham hall, traying in the cem and dorm decorating are among the season's more popular amusements. president bolling substituted for santa at the christmas dance sponsored by the day dodgers. before sending students home for the holidays, the caf generously served a special steak dinner. the feast was made more of an occasion than the steaks really called for by adding table decorations, some of them rather extreme. ' ' 5 -J wt - -.-x-:.5k,3,-fi, 1 . iam., I the weaker sex made the date and her lucky feIIa's boutonniere for the girl-invite dance. wra chose wonderland of hearts as the theme for the valentine dance. a giant black spider, made in the back room by iuniors, overshadowed the bad luck ball. everyone came in costume, including the chaperones. the cool quartet with the shades were the featured entertainment. a footnote: the costume dance is a 2-year old tradition that was started by the class of '59 who sponsored the mardi gras last year. X S togetherness at shakamak was enioyed by over half the campus who retreated from the thickening academic atmosphere to a weekend of undisturbed loafing. it took suc a long time to sell students on the idea of an all-college outing, but when the tickets were reduced to 53.75, only a miserable minority stayed behind to eat cold meals and work on term papers. a variety of scheduled activities, the numerous facilities available at the park, and the balmy weather made the outing a successful risk. N X 1-gyms -n O O mmor social events such as square dances, picnics, band concerts, wednesday night dances, and coed swims are also part of the panoramic social scene. whether students take advantage of these outlets depend upon, among other things, who else is going, what else is happning, how many pennies it will take, and when the next exam or paper is scheduled. all things considered, if iack is a dull boy, it's his own fault! Z. gg, 6532 28 the v closest thing to perpetual motion at earlham is the turn table of the iuke box that almost destroyed the social appeal of the commons, then some kind person turned it down. students went to the commons to see who was there, to smoke, to get something to eat, to play bridge, or iust out of habit. waiting for dinner and having a tete a tete in the game room, as well as hacking around in the commons, are technically social occasions. for pictures and comments about l0:29 in front of earlham hall or about couples in the cem, consult previous sargassos. lYAyii,,gqi,sS:.ii,s,x5y ' ' '- Q sf!-il: wk sv.-14 WW if v.. A 'Q mmsm, as-2 Yr senators of the round table under the hamilton administration allocated 516,800 worth of activities fees to student organizations and activities and revised the honor code. the faculty's invitation asking students to ioin certain faculty committees which make college policies boosted senate's prestige. senate reports in hall meetings, special bull sessions in the commons, and an open forum in convocation kept students informed concerning senate activities. issues in the presidential campaign were the banning of sophomore cars, allocations to small campus organizations, student influence in academic matters, and the fate of sargasso. mel keiser won at the polls over competitors, dave gray and sam trueblood. 30 4 .,-.Q '95 . 1 S av NI 'iw NPN f v , Q 4 rw g Q A gg, If 5 Q t . WX t ,, lj 71 we mixing business .-..-4-.-'iii--A-t -V ii 33 with refreshments, weekly hall confabs keep dorm students enlightened on civic affairs and unpopular dorm meetings down to a minimum. .aws council became famous for its revision of coed hours which left the front doors of o-a and earlham hall open as late as on weekends. life in barrett cmd bundy is supervised by the amr council. the two constituents of the earlham body politic l a.m. other are campus village and day dodgers. many villagers are ex-dorm residents and, despite family interests, take an active part in campus affairs. day dodgers look like regular students except they live off campus. . ti , . , . , ' f 'Z . TS hifi 1 a it i Pl A555 iii E Sl Q 1 1 , i, Sie' V if Mx' ,V fs if f summit conferences composed of student and faculty representatives meet for the first this year and oversee general student affairs. one of the most well- known committees, appointed by senate to keep the frosh from getting homesick, is the white-beanied precedents team. the traffic court headed by win rood sees that all the parking signs and traffic regulations are obeyed. another popular committee founded by senate encourages students to attend convocation or sign out for a legitimate cut. that after-the-program attendance check brought results. these are just a few of the umpteen committees under senate. the nominating committee's slogan: don't iust stand there, ioin something! Ng . -,X ... x., R 'xxx ,K M 'lllll igzwew-g, hard-working, unappreciated class officers see that the floats are built, dances and picnics come off, and something is written for the annual song contest. each class elects a president, vice- president, secretary, treasurer, and two social chairmen to stir up the enthusiasm that went out with the freshman year. if the officers are lucky, they can delegate the work to committees. that's what class meetings are for and why no one goes. IO times out of 9 the few class-conscious, old faithfuls who can't say, no, wind up doing it all anyway. , 7 L0 ,lx J ME 11 145 AN v z.-I WK 9552? 5 ,- -4 ,. 1 Y JI Qu .- QQ Q-Q1 ,gal 'QQ -A let's go ape for campus chest, was the theme for this year's charity drive which set its goal at 51200. among the goodies auctioned off were a hand-knit f -- sweater, a champagne party, 4 blind dates, tickets to see the metropolitan at bloomington, a quiet place to study, a 20's party at hobbs' mill, a picnic at blue clay, a page in the sargasso, etc., etc., etc. the campus chest convocations entertained students with local talent such as scott stanley and iokes l?l, the aragoosa county boys, and a show of strength by hobbs and holvik. first south o-a and second north bundy chipped in to win the privilege of not having to dress up for dinner by giving the largest hall contributions. i r.xgwm-mabvixunwzm wr .uus.w -v m X, .,:,.,1-g--93 tv- v W ii- V vs tres Ssggfmw-iw . X ' DVI rut G X composed of eggheads and intellectuals the central communications board is the core of the campus publications - post, crucible, and sargasso - and the radio station, wvoe. senior member of ccb, robbie bresler, championed publication rights on the senate floor and elsewhere during the stormy year. communication offices are located in the catacombs of bundy basement. a large part of this year's allocation went to equip the new sargasso dark room and radio station. budget problems monopolized almost all of the ccb discussions, but there was also time to look at a few at the finished products. ces .wi , if fi .1 , :J ' K , cis, ,pf L' ' 1 viii: Q93 .tiff .u 4 '-.,.. .'1.'- .. J, 404,11 the voice of earlham was heard by some of the campus some of the time but never by all of the campus all of the time because of technical difficulties - not enough technicians and too many difficulties. big chief esty, the station manager, did succeed in turning an empty room into a presentable studio, office, and control room, and in building up student interest in the program department. panel discussions, featuring guest speakers visiting campus, diverse disc iocky shows, campus and world news reports, and broadcasts of home games were among the programs scheduled perhaps when the station can afford a few more satellite transmitters, they can get off the ground and be on the air permanently. X oh where, oh where is my sargasso? asked impatient students who were more anxious to see themselves in the '58 year book than in the '59. however, the flood of fanmail notes sent by the patient and good-humored editor, dorothy deisher, finally soaked in. weekly meetings kept up the moral, if not the productivity, of the small staff that had been scraped together. the wall and steam pipes of the Sargasso office were painted in abstract by joe finkler. zlf Xas- cz sang good music, not warmed-over waring, wherever they appeared at the tivoli for the special christmas program featuring amalp in philadelphia, new york, and west hartford during their spring trip, and on goddard stage for their performance of patience. the concert choir, dynamically directed by len holvik, was praised by wallace woodworth, len's former professor, and other discriminating critics. earlham audiences were especially de- lighted with their production of the gas opera. the choir also holds the world's record for filling the little room in the back of the bus to the greatest capacity yet attained-9. F- 'VM , 'lll 'vi f V pig! l , X - H l X l X , , as.. su - , ,N ,Z bliss? v 3,114 vis K Mfki., -1 N4 x f 'N its .2 Wife ,.g,g,:ff'f1s. his M -of -iii-'jf ...- ' LZ , ,mcg ,f y-cc :gb people behlnd the scenes as often as in front of them are mask 8 mantle and boards club members who are feverishly devoted to . the tragedies and comedies of producing plays on goddard stage. this year's season was challenging to both acting and technical departments. how to make shaw's long dialogues in misalliance play and how to fit both scenery and the large number of dramatis personae on the 2 x A stage in shrew were among problems which irritated ulcers. house management, back stage work, and rehearsals were time-consuming activities, but no one worried about that until the play and cast party were over. dessertless meals and hobo days were among isac's proiects to raise money to help support a foreign student at earlham. the international student aid committee also sponsored a talent night which featured such unusual acts as a story teller from afganistan and a iapanese geisha dance. the purpose of the united nations student organization, unso, is to create a better understanding between americans and foreign students on a small group basis. 1 xx11zu the 2 invitational organizations, subjects of much controversy, are the phoenix band and the ionian society. the ionian men, set apart by their pins and sweat- shirts, sponsored the all-college trip to franklin and the homecoming dance. this year the phoenix. ladies drew up a new constitution which no longer defined the band as a literary club. they published the college directory and were sponsors of the may day dance iust the same. dorian society, which has an open member ship, planned a series of lectures given primarily by earlham professors. iust as an experiment they invited tom wohlforth, one of the editors of the young socialist, to speak. 50 'N ,ef u 444, Q meeting woulcln't be complete without the assistance of the meeting- house cabinet who plan and take part in the all-college worship services, serve coffee and cookies beforehand, and supply extra benches when necessary. young methodists, young friends, deputations and life service fellowship were among the active religious organizations on the campus this year. Q43 fx with a little more experience our football team's record could have been better. the '58 squad showed terrific team spirit with 20 freshmen out for the first game at franklin. player iniuries plagued coaches iones, oberle, and meek all during the season- since several games were lost before earlham got rolling, the first quarter seemed to be the disastrous period, the 0-7 record doesn't show the defensive improvement made over the '57 team. opponents were held to an average of 28 points per game compared with 41 last year. the quakers were the only competitors to score 2 touchdowns against rose poly during the '58 season. V-an-+ a strong finish is the best way to look at this year's baseball record. although the quaker ball club won only l of 9 scheduled games, they came back to win the earlham invitational tournament in 2 exciting performances. by superb hitting and defensive action they shut out marian college 2-0 in the morning session and tramped dayton that afternoon. coach george oberle described the team as one that never quite ielled but still kept on giving it the old college try. a bat rack, sliding pit, and two pitching mounds were new additions to the practise field on comstock. most of the home games were played in the more official looking richmond stadium.
