ln the creation of this volume, we originally intended to shun the senti- mentality of former yearhooks, the outworn words that we felt every grad- uating class had used in the sadness of departure. We wanted to put the past lieliind us when the time cameg in the last few weeks of our Earlham years, we wanted to he conscious only of our immediate futures. liut now that we are here on the verge of completing this part of our education. we are gripped with the same tightening of the throat. and the same words crave expression. Words themselves are worthless without deeply felt ideas heliind them. The phrases we thought sentimental in our under- classmen days now have taken on real meaning for us. Of course it is not easy to tear away from this familiar place that we all have loved. Our thoughts turn to the wide, green stretches of campus, the newly hudding iiiaples and elms along the walks, the hirds chirping outside the windows in Carp, and the Red-Bud hy the Heart. Whoever wrote the .-Xlma Nlater must have done it in the spring. Aliliough most graduating classes are strikingly alike, We feel that 1948 makes us different. Many men. whose studies were interrupted by the War, returned to Iiarlham to graduate with us. The concern felt hy these veterans and conscientious ohiectors has heen contagious, and all of us have sensed the necessity for thinking and acting decisively and constructively. Our own immediate concern has been the feeding of our own mouths and souls. liarlham, however. has given us an awareness that we are not alone in our desires. The world is teeming with men and women who are motivated hy the same hungers. Grateful for the environment that we have found at Iiarlliam. we leave with the faith that our text-hook theory is usahle, and with the realization that the urgency of our times demands that we give nl. ourselves in the fulfilling of the needs of others. 4
