In the past fifty years these values have been achifved hv fla sf-s from ' 27 to ' 77. Many changes, however, have occured in the past 50 years of academic pursuit at ERHS. Special programs were developed to aid the educationally handicapped. ROP classes were created to advance career oriented edu- cation in Business Office. Health, and Child Care occupations. Gifted stud HS have participated in academi-. .ed courses and afterschool programs. The Class of ' 77 had to acquire the largest number of credits in the 50 year hi-torv if ERHS- 165 in all. This one fact stai that the admirable academic tra ERHS will be upheld as we begin our THE eCLIDEN TEAK €IP SDIIKIT Spirit always existed at Eagle Rock. Fifty years ago there were only three male cheer- leaders. Drill Team did not exist. This year there were 15 cheerleaders and a Drill Team consisting of 76 girls. Spirit really increased in 76. Twirlers and Banner girls helped to encourage more spirit. The crowd got into the cheers and made it easi- er for the Varsity Cheerleaders to use their techniques learned at summer camp. The fans helped to fire-up the team spirit. Teamwork and enthusiasm is what spirit is all about. Now that our high school years are coming to a close, our true pride and spirit comes into light. Being a senior is some- thing special. Celebrating our .nOth Anniver- sary has enriched our year of commencment. On behalf of the entire senior class, I would like to thank our adviser Mr. David Wallett for his never ending patience and ever valu- able advice. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER Fans beginning to cheer; green and old sparkling everywhere began a night to re- member. . . At 7:30 p.m. in the football stadium of Ea.st Los Angeles College, the procession of the court began. Drill Team headed the proces- sion by marching into the stadium. Eagle Rock ' s Cheer and Yell followed and fired up spirit as they arrived in bright red fire trucks. Queen Lorie, First Princess Leslie, Second Princess Aana, Third Princess Linda, and Fourth Princess Robin were chauffeured in new Fiats. After being es- corted by their fathers, the traditional crowning of the court was performed by five chosen football players. The girls were then escorted by Knights to their thrones where they watched the game. Homecoming has always been a special night, full of excitement and fun. Many Alumni never fail to attend the game. Parents are also great supporters. In spite of the team ' s loss to Franklin, Varsity 6-16 and Bees 0-6, good memories of Homecom- ing 1976 will live on. Elscorted by Knight Doug Turner, Queen Lorie watches the game from her throne. THE LEGEND OF THE ROCK In the days before Jose Verdugo owned the valley of the San Rafael Hills long before the Spaniards called the great boulder the Fat Rock, a large band of Indians camped in the plains below the great rock. The warriors lolled about and told stories of combat arid victory ! ■the young men, while the squaws scratched in the soil, or lugged logs for the fire, carrying their papooses on their backs. One little baby lay on a skin, gazing at the soaring birds in the sky overhead. Suddenly, in one mighty circle, an eagle dropped upon the baby, and seizing it in its talons arose swiftly and flew eastward toward the great rock. Soon, the whole tribe was chasing the huge bird and shooting at him with their arrows. They could not kill him, and fell to the earth cursing him. They called to the sun god to aid them. Let his shadow not pass the gray rock! Let him crush himself upon it and turn to stone! Dropping the infant unhurt below, the eagle dashed against the rock. The imprint of his huge body remained in the rock forever. The above photo is of Oak Knoll Drive in 1909. The lower picture is an early photo of the Eagle Rock before the community was developed. In the early 1900 ' s many Chinese people worked on the ranches around Eagle Rock at the time the revolt against the Manchu Dynasty began. An American sergeant named Ansel O ' Banion was engaged to train these lo- cal Chinese as officers for a Chinese revolutionaire army. From 1905 to 1911 O ' Banion and his Chinese troops would often be seen hiking about the countryside on their field training, occasionally parading down Colo- rado Boulevard in their uniforms. .l j The first inhabitants of what is now Eagle Rock are thought to have been a group of Shoshone Indians named Gabrielenos (after the mission). They had migrated from Arizona, Utah, and the California desert, settling from Ventura to modern Orange County. The Indians camped in and around the Eagle Rock area from Yosemite Park to the canyon below the Eagle Rock. The area supported only 200 persons who were extinct by the 1850 ' s. During the 1700 ' s, while Spain was in control of Califor- nia, a man named Jose Maria de Verdugo was a soldier of the King of Spain, and the Corporal of the Guard at the founding of the San Gabriel Mission. He married and be- gan raising cattle to support his family. He found the pas- tures to the west of the Arroyo Seco ideal for cattle ranch- ing and petitioned to Governor Pedro Pages for grazing rights. In 1784, Verdugo was granted 36,403 acres of land for his ranch. Using modern landmarks, the ranch includ- ed areas of Burbank, Glendale, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Flintridge, Montrose, Pasadena, La Cresenta, and La Canada. Jose Verdugo died in 1831 leaving the ranch to his two children. In 1848, when the U.S. took over California, the govern- ment set up a land commission to pass on all Mexican land titles. In 1861 the Verdugo children mortgaged the ranch but after eight years were unable to pay the debt. The ranch was put up for public auction and sold to Al- fred Chapman for .$.58,750. In 1870, following more court battles, the ranch was subdivided into thirty-one parcels. The largest part went to Benjamin Dreyfus who was awarded 8.000 acres, including most of Eagle Rock and part of Glendale. Dreyfus used the land to raise sheep and to farm grapes for his winery. The land was later sold to American land speculators. In 1906 it was possible to take a trolley car from Colorado Blvd. and Townsend Ave. all the way to Inglewood for only 5(. This streetcar, called the Dinky, ran from Glendale to the Eagle Rock center for twenty years. At the intersection of Eagle Rock and Colorado Blvds. there was a shaded turntable for the trolley cars where they changed routes and often were stored for short periods of time, as il- lustrated in the picture on the opposite page. 82 The lAth AngeleH Huburb of Kagle Kuck wan flntt named Huntington ' s Trolley SyBtem in AuKUKt, 1906. At the time il was miHitly farmland. The community grew quickly in the next three years; twenty-two milex of paved highway were completed and many beautiful homes were built. In 191 1, Kagle Rr ck citizens got a charter making (vagle Hock it£ own separate city. The community maintained its own fire and ptjiice departments as well as a small central school. Eagle Rock was an active city. Citizens often submitted a float to the Rose Parade as a community effort. In 1917 Eagle Rock won Tirst prize for ita float. Eagle Rock also participated in world affairs. The Eagle Rock Park was the site of the first Boy Scout outing in America. The 1910 outing t K k place within three months after the Scout charter had been written. Twelve years after Eagle Rock became a city, residents voted to become part of Los Angeles in 1923. Eagle Rock was prom- ised an adequate water supply and an upgraded school sys- tem, including a junior and senior high school. The city hall, shown in the photo at the left, was converted into a commun- ity building still used today. IN THE BEGINNING 83 The stock market plunged on October 24, 1929. The Great Depres- sion had begun. It lasted until World War II, causing great hard- ships for many Americans. They found their escape from reality through the magical world of fantasy. That box in the living room was everybody ' s ticket to adventure, laughter, sweet music, and romance. Telephone use dropped 50 per cent; car thieves had an easy time on empty streets; and many movie theaters closed down as millions of Americans tuned in to the radio. As the audience supplied the pictures in their imagination, the radio brought the sound to form many well known programs in the 30 ' s. Housewives started each day with the drama serial Our Gal Sunday. The show began with, Can this girl from a mining town in the West find happiness as the wife of a wealthy and titled Englishman? Folks turned to comedy with such shows as Amos ' n ' Andy, Edgar Bergen and his sidekick dummy Charlie McCar- thy, Jack Benny and Mary Livingston, Ozzie and Harriet, Fibber McGee and Molly, and a musical show with Kate Smith. Radio encouraged the dance band era. Many listened to the notes of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo, and Glenn Miller, opening a new era of swing fever. As a Halloween joke in 1938, CBS and Orson Welles (right photo) presented a radio play based on War of the Worlds. The show caused a panic. Most listeners apparently were too frightened to hear Welles chuckling the last line: If your doorbell rings and no- body ' s there, that was no Martian. It ' s Halloween. Broomhall, the Dahlia king, was a well known local resident. A school, street, and area were named after him. Time Life .■l - %S .-. Time Life Many Shirley Temple look-alike contests were held around the country during the 30 s honoring the child star. DEPRESSION YEARS Hard times hit .America during the Depression years of the .30 ' s. The first class party at Eagle Rock High Sch K)l in 1932 was a jovial hard times party. Student Council voted that year to donate Sl,089.52 to help feed 10,000 needy Los Angeles children. Eagle Rock was not a poverty stricken suburb. The new high school had just been completed. It was one of thirty special experimental high schools in the United States. A teacher ' s beginning salary at a city high school was S180 a month. Operas were given as student productions throughout the 30 s. E ch year the Agriculture Club presented an annual flower show. They also sponsored pet shows and entered stock judging contests. Two graduations were held each year for the winter and summer class- es. Two proms were also held each year. Semi-annual yearbooks were often produced. The W ' 33 Totem was printed on campus, contained thirty pages, and cost S.25. A new cinematography class experimented in this new medium and produced Harbor Scenes. Their motion picture won first prize in the California amateur contest. Two thousand students were enrolled in E gle Rock High Schoo l by 1937. but enrollment dropped to 1300 that same year when two new- junior high schools opened in the area. Absolutely no one who spent his time at the movies would ever have known that the nation was down in the dumps. Hollywood ' s Heaven on Earth was a deliberate and enormously successful effort to provide escape for all for a measly lOt admission for children and 25c for adults. It was rumored in the 30 ' s that Warner Brothers wanted to purchase land in Eagle Rock to start the motion picture capital of the world. Local theaters gave d«)r prizes that ranged from coupons for free hair- dos to shinv new automobiles. 85 WAR YEARS DOMINATE 40 ' S The 1940 ' s were dominated by war efforts. After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. America geared itself for an all out effort to win World War II with her Allies. More than 55 Eagle Rock graduates were killed during the war while serving in the armed forces. So many high school students joined the armed services during the school term of 1942 that several dozen yearbooks remained unclaimed at the end of the year. Eagle Rock High School formed a Korean Club that raised enough money to send the president, Dennis Peters, and his staff to Korea to meet with General MacArthur to assess the war situation. The scare of communism was so great that the army was suspected of having commies in their ranks. The Army-McCarthy hearings, televized nationally, were set up to root out these pinkos. Customs of the 1950 ' s were influenced by fads. Domin- ating the scene were hula hoops, Doodles, and Davy Crockett hats. Flying saucer sightings also became a familiar occurrence until one was sighted every week. In 1951, various flashes were reported in the Eagle Rock area that were described as atomic flashes and flying saucers and men from Mars. As it turned out, all these mysterious objects were just two ERHS service groups, Mosh and Knights, competing for ads. The Eagle Rock was constantly being defaced. Frank- lin High School students frequently doused the Rock with paint until it suddenly spawned shades of white, orange, and green. Angered residents met often to dis- cuss ways of protecting the Rock, including the as- signment of a regular police patrol. Nature also struck out at the Rock with the 1952 Tehachapi earthquake that registered approximately 8.0 on the Richter scale and caused a section of the Eagle ' s wing to drop off. The period of the 1950 ' s was a time when all Americans were forced to re-examine old political beliefs and life- styles, thus setting the stage for the violent decade to TOP: A local television store shows off the new-models of the 50 ' s. Time Life THE RADICAL YEARS The 1960 ' s was a period of great social upheaval. Both progress and calamity highlighted the era. Business and commerce thrived in Eagle Rock. A new concept in shopping, the shopping center, opened in the Mayfair-Savon complex. So successful was this new concept that in the following decade a larger, more thorough center was built as the Eagle Rock Pla- Eagle Rock Sentinel Progress, however, often stirred up controversy. When Glendale proposed to build a dump road through Scholl Canyon, many Eagle Rock residents felt it would destroy Eagle Rock with its quaint, untouched atmosphere. Another big squabble was the proposed freeway and its three alternative routes, all cutting through Eagle Rock. When the freeway finally was un- der construction, many Eagle Rock residents sold their homes for fear of unbearable noise. Calamity also affected Eagle Rock leaving an indeli- ble mark of grief and fear. The worst disaster ever to strike Eagle Rock came on March 17, 1964, when a gi- gantic brush fire swept down from the northern hills and engulfed home after home in the foothills above the community. Soot blackened the area as a result of a tremendous fire storm that created winds of up to 100 miles per hour. Other unforgettable momenu in the 60 ' s remain engraved in the minds of many Eagl - Rock residenU. In 1965, riots broke out in WalU, no more than fifUen miles away from Eagle Rock, result ing in violent deaths, massive fires and exUnsive loot ing until federal troops stepped in to keep order. An other frightening moment took place in 1969, when Charles Manson and his followers committed several murders in the Los Angeles area, two of which look place in the Los Feliz district only six miles away from the community. War dominated the political scene as the nation plunged into the Vietnam conflict. Over 50,000 Ameri- can men lost their lives during the war. The war took such a heavy toll that a 25 member Eagle Rock base- ball team, organized in the early 60 ' s, lost over one third of its players to the war by the end of the decade. The Vietnam War also provoked war protesU through- out the country that resulted in a toUlly new culture. The hippie movement introduced long hair, hard rock music and mass love-ins , all a protest to the status quo. Psychedelic designs added a new dimen- sion to clothing styles and sometimes few clothes were worn at all. Hank Walker LEFT: Neil Armstrong walks on the moon, July 20, 1969. Students of the area had previous- ly attended Glendale High School. The first student body consisted of 750 students, for- ty-three of whom were the first graduating class two years later. Helen Babson, the first principal, directed a faculty of 56 members. She remained principal at Eagle Rock for more than seventeen years. In 1977 Eagle Rock celebrated its Golden Anniversary. En- rollment reached more than 2400. More than 100 teach- ers were members of the faculty. Eagle Rock High School has had only five principals over the past fifty years. Many changes have taken place at Eagle Rock. Al- though Eagle Rock High has always been a six year institution, in early years the junior high school build- ings were physically separate from the senior high. Changes have also taken place in curriculum. Acap- pella choir, music appreciation, music theory, orches- tra, costume design, radio, and salesmanship, along with others, are a thing of the past. 1 . FIFTY YEAR SPORTS REVIEW When Eagle Rock first opened its doors in 1927, it offered students more than just a chance to increase their academic knowledge. It gave them an opportunity to compete and to excel in athletic ac- tivities and organized sports. During the first decades, many new sports developed as student in- terest grew. In 1928, the first football teams were formed. Although new and inexperienced, the Cee team went on to tie with Burbank for the league championship. Three Eagle Rock track men made it to the Southern California track finals and took second place in 1931. During 1932, the Cee basketball team won their league title, while the Bee track team took their Valley League title. The varsity football teams had their winning seasons, taking the championship in 1933, ' 38, and again in ' 39. By 1937, the Bee track team had accumulated six straight titles in their division. In that same year, the varsity basketball team won their title after losing it three years earlier by a mere two points. Tennis also showed its strength by having championship seasons in both 1935 and 1939. During the decade of the 40 ' s, sport activities slowed as the war continued. In 1943 the Eagle Rock teams were transfered from the Valley League to the Northern League as war time restrictions were put into effect, cutting down on travel and gasoline because of a gas shortage. Eagle Rock returned to the Valley League in 1946. The memorable 50 ' s brought with them championships as well as a new sport. Swimming was added to the curriculum, with the first team forming in 1955. In that same year, four long standing track records were broken by Eagle Rock tracksters. Varsity football be- came one of two undefeated teams in the city as they took the title in 1956. Through the efforts of the student body, an electrical score- board was bought and added to the field in 1957. Possibly motivated by the new addition, the varsity football team went to the city-play- offs for the second time in E.R. history. Both cross country teams, as well as the varsity. Bee, and Cee track teams took their league titles that year. With the coming of 1959, a girl ' s field was added to the school ' s campus in the hopes of organizing team sports for the girls. The varsity football team began the 60 ' s with the league title and a winning performance at the Milk Bowl Game against Garfield. This decade saw the Bee football team win their title six times. It also brought league victories to the varsity track team in ' 63 and the Bee basketball team in ' 66. With the 70 ' s came a rise in girls ' sports and activities. Sports of- fered were volleyball, badminton, basketball, Softball, gymnastics, and tennis. Girl ' s track was added in 1977. In 1973, all E.R. swim teams took their league titles. The tennis team, varsity track, and Bee basketball also took their respective titles. Both the varsity and Bee football teams went through undefeated seasons in 1974. The swim teams again swept their divisions with victories in that same year. Also in ' 74, the varsity tennis team, being the best in the his- tory of the school, placed third in the city after losing to first place Taft in a tiebreaker. The cross country teams took their titles in 1973 and in ' 70 and ' 74 as co-champs. During the 70 ' s, co-ed swim- ming and gymnastics emerged. The first organized swim team of Eagle Rock was formed in 1955. They had already gone four for four in league competition - ' hen this picture was taken. ACTIVITIES REMAINED A HERITAGE OF E.R.H.S. The story of Eagle Rock High would not be complete without a word about the school ' s great variety of clubs and their activities. It would be hard to count all the organizations that have spent time here at the Rock. Each had numerous and unique responsibilities and activities. It seemed that most club activity took place in the 50 ' s and 60 ' s. Before that, only a few clubs existed. Although many of the clubs are not around today, their activities have left lasting impressions on many an E.R. graduate. Many of the old traditions have been lost over the years. Gone are the days when the Knights would show scared new students to their classes and around campus. No longer do they park cars during school activities or co-sponsor the annual Bunny Hop Dance with Moshitamoi. The members of Mosh no longer sell fudge at the Sen- ior Play or act as babysitters for the PTA nursery. It has been sever- al years since the Kabanokas served the teachers ' lunch or supplied a fix-it-box. But what about the other organizations that have been at Eagle Rock? Squires kept order in the stands during football games just as the Knights have during assemblies. They would also help load the booster buses for away games. Another club, Garconettes, spon- sored one of the biggest dances of the year. The Hobo Hobble was the only dance in which jeans and tennies could be worn. It was al- ways something to look forward to. Teen Troc was an organization which sponsored up to five dances a semester. Key Club, Venderettes, Red Cross, Wawokyas, Yeomen, Lancers, Treasurettes, Athenians: the list goes on. All have helped to make Eagle Rock an outstanding school. A few meet- ings were held during which a name was chosen for the newly founded organization. Moshitamoi, an Indian word meaning eagle in flight, was selected. Over the years the club has grown and changed, but it has always retained the main purpose for its beginning: to bring service and leadership to Eagle Rock High. The members of Mosh have worked hard to make their organ- ization a meaningful one. They have sponsored car washes, food sales and other activities to raise money for worthwhile projects. One of the club ' s largest respon- sibilities has been to organize and present the events during Homecoming week, including the Court Party. Sports gives the students a feehng of competition along with a chance to exert energy. Eagle Rock had five sports offered in 1927. They were football, track, baseball, tennis and basketball. The basketball team was chosen from a melon-tossing com- petition. At this time in athletics, it was common to compete against teammates rather than opposing schools. Basketball was the only sport offered to girls. Dances after these games were very popular. As years progressed there became a greater variety of sports at Eagle Rock. In 1932 the ' first golf team played at the Chevy Chase Country Club. Student ability im- proved as the school continued to grow. Richard Lindsley, player of the year, went all city and led the basketball team to a City Championship in 1938. Richard Powell and Jay Helman also went all city. Doug Dunlap, who scored 68 points in 1967 against ' Lincoln, holds the city record and Larry Anderson was the city ' s leading scorer in 1966. In the past swimmers did well. Bruce Brown in 1963 held one of the top times in the nation in the 400 yard freestyle. Both Brad Oilman in 1970 and Tom Maddocks in 1974 set two new city records each. Excellent Tennis players such as Ben Taylor, Ron Hightower, and Ray Maeno originated from here. Jeff Lewsadder, Abbott Du- Galley, Dick and Bill Getzelman were all good gymnasts. Joe Lasario took first place ' in City in Rope Climbing competition which is no longer an event. Kenny Griffin and Bill Matheson were gvmnasts who went on to the Olympics. In Track and Field, Rick Carey won the Golden West Championship in the high jump and Dave Brown won the City Shot Put in 1968. In Baseball, Tom Impliazzo went all city and was a first draft choice to the San Francisco Giants. Steve Wahl was another great athlete. In Baseball he was the first draft choice of the Cleveland Indians. Steve also went first team all City as a quar- terback in 1968. Other great football players were Dave Brown, Allen Shields and Bill Kennison. Eagle Rock definitely has had its share of good athletes due to a good sports program and a fine coaching staff. 1 120 Sports Summary CaVIDSHJIIJE Sports Summary 121 llrGREEN MACHINE ,,_ MEETS DISAPPOINTMENTJII FRONT ROW: Richard Rodriguez, Jeff Ratay, George Vercelli, Wyatt Chandler, Joe Tinghitella, Craig Tom, Kent Jorgensen, Kevyn Leiner, Jay Blohm, Larry Thompson, Ton Mawhinney, Maurice Johnson, Mark Georgette. The Varsity Football season was a year of disappointment for ' I ' he iiock. Their overall record of 3-6-0 was deceiving because the team was actually much stronger. A fifth place finish in the Northern League was disappointing from a won-ioss standpoint; but the season was filled with many exciting moments, including the Eagles ' near upset of Wilson (28-25). the 1976 ;}-A Champion. Coaches Johnson, Lew, and Hashimoto are to be given great credit for molding a competitive team from the little material they had to work with. Besides winning, the coaches m- stilled sportsmanship, discipline, and companionship. A few of the athletes received all-league mention. No matter what the final score of any Eagles ' game the opponents knew they had met The Rock. The annual Varsity Football Banquet was held January 4, 1977, at Pikes Verdugo Oaks. The players honored were: Out- standing Defensive Player Joe Hall; Outstanding Lineman Jay Blohm; Outstanding Back Joe Tinghitella; Most Inspira- tional Kevyn Leiner; Most Improved John Meiding; 101 Per- cent George Vercelli; and Most Outstanding Player Mark Georgette. The Eagles entered league action with a 2-1-1 practice record including a hard fought 6-6 tie with South Pasadena ' s usually powerful Tenth Grade Team. The Eagle Bee ' s opened Northern League play with three decisive victories over Belmont, Wilson, and Marshall. This set up the 1976 Northern League championship battle versus the Franklin Panthers on Homecoming night. The score was deadlocked 0-0 in the fourth quarter when a Franklin defensive back returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown. Franklin ' s victory, 6-0, ended the Eagle ' s Northern League con- secutive victories without a loss at 19 games and ended their championship string after three straight years. They were a team who had only one re- turning Varsity player, who was Craig Tom. But as the season rolled by, the team showed much improvement. Galen Morton picked more rebounds off the boards and Donny Haymaker helped out with his scoring. Donny scored games of 50 points against Belmont and 42 against Carson in the City Play-Offs. He averaged a score of 23 and was the seventh leading scorer in the City. The awards at the end of the season were well deserved. Donny Haymaker received Most Valuable Player and Leading Scorer. No coach was available last year, so when Mrs. Ander- son began working with the teams she had to start fresh. Fifteen girls went out for both the Varsity and Bee teams; therefore, sub- stitutes were hard to find. For the Bee ' s season Carol Hay- maker was an inspiration to the team, as well as an outstanding player. Throughout Eagle Rock ' s history, cheerleading has played a major role in motivating school spirit and pride. This year ' s Varsity squad was the first ever to attend a cheerlead- ing seminar. It also gives students time to do something pro- ductive for the school. It is important to recognize those who are promoting the spirit. This year there were three new organizations created to promote the Eagle Rock spirit. All three were successful. The Banner Girls and the Twirlers added something extra to the half-time show. The Banner Girls, with their homemade banners, marched out onto the field with the band. They were Karen Giss, Lee Ann Houck-(head), Lisa Bukovitz, Fran- cesca Cho, Jeri Lynn Burden. Janet Wilson and Gwynn Copeland. In front of them were the five twirlers. Elena Gonzales, Maria Ybarra and Lynn Braun were led by Captains Debbie Brosell and Rosanne Paddio. They made up new routines each week which coordinated with the Drill Team show. Their routines consisted of figure eights, two-handed spins, shoulder rolls, and thumb tosses. The Eagle Troopers were a group of students who came to the basketball games and cheered. They grew in size as the season progressed. They brought instruments, ba- nanas and candy to the games to help encourage the crowd to participate. Officer Chuck Foote showed up with the Troopers and helped to enthuse the crowd. It is spirit like this that makes competition fun and exciting. The Banner Girls position themselves for tne half-time show. Gwynn and Karen stop for a rest during their morning practice. For the first time in Eagle Rock ' s history a girls ' sport had an all male coaching staff. Many girls demonstrated talent under the guidance of Mr. Nakatani and Mr. Hanson. The team had rough competition ahead of them and worked diligently at each prac- tice. Mr. Hanson felt that the team would do a sufficient job during the season. It was new ideas like this that helped to show Eagle Rock ' s 50 years of progress. 154 Softball GOLFERS GO FORE IT Bob Fegley. Steve Kolar, Greg Moore, Rauf Glasgow. Coach Johnson. Carolann Brown. Golf 155 LEAGUE TOUGH FOR STRIDERS J The Varsity Striders had a disappointing season, ending the year with a 0-5 won loss record. Although the team lacked depth and en- countered many setbacks, the season was not without its highlights. Senior Mark Lewis and junior Pat Brennan both put forth many out- standing performances. Mark Lewis set a new school record in the three mile course at Pierce College with a time of 15:30. He also es- tabhshed a new course record at Peck Park, captured the Northern League individual cross country championship, and was highly rated going into the 1976 City Finals at Pierce. Pat Brennan, only a junior, also had an excellent season as he placed high in the Northern League finals and advanced to the city semi-finals. The Tenth Grade Cross Country Team culmi- nated an excellent season with an eight place finish in the city finals held at Pierce College December 11. The Eagle Striders ended their Northern League campaign with a 4-1 record. Their only loss was to Wilson ' s championship team. As the competition stiffened, the Eagles im- proved markedly. Going into the city finals the team was picked for a second place finish but due to a last minute injury to Anthony Medina the team ' s chances dimmed. This let down seemed to break the backbone of the team as they could only capture eighth place in the over- all standings. Tenth grader David Raba proved to be the most outstanding runner as he established a new school record of 11:46 on the two mile course at Pierce College. David ' s most outstanding ac- complishment this season was capturing the 1976 Northern League Individual Championship. J Cross Country 157 p PVARSITY LACKS DEPTHJJI Coming off last years 7-1 season it was too early to make predictions but the outcome of the 1977 sea- son depended on hard work and determination. Due to a lack of depth many of the runners had to double in events in an effort to re- ceive valuable dual meet points. The strongest events were the 330 intermediate hurdles, Greg Davis; one and two mile runs, Mark Lewis; pole vault, Charles Suey and David Cross; and the high jump. Mace Hanley. This was a whole new experience for most of the girls who had never before competed in any type of organized track competition. The coaches were given a month of training time to mold a competitive team for the first practice meet. The strongest events looked to be both the 100 and 200 yard dashes, medley relay, two mile run. and 880 yard run. Patricia Alatorre and Sabrina Fulgoni led the team in sprints while Vil- ma Iglesias and Debbie Lorenz were the top distance runners. Lisa Smith was the top hurdler and Kelli Jorgensen produced excellent marks in the high jump. Girls Track 161 Ptennis anyonetjii The Eagle Rock girls ' tennis team captured their fifth con- secutive league title. Their only loss during regular season was a league set-back to the Wilson Mules. The most outstanding players this season were Kathy Tso, Donna Deane, Jeannette Papp and Debbie Hakonson. The doubles team of Bonnie Poyorena and Vickie Benson went through the regular season undefeated. In the first round of the playoffs, the team defeated South Gate, 4-3, but were eliminated from post season play when they were soundly defeated by the powerful team from Grant High School, 0-7. The outlook for the 1977 boys ' team was very optimisti c, according to coach Hal Stepteau. The results of the season depended on the performance of the many 9th and 10th graders. But with talent abounding, the team was expected to do well in league play. Veterans Danny Martinez, Brian Williams, and Paul Bleam were expected to carry the load for the two time defending Northern League Champs. f9 r 9 ABOVE: Vicki Benson sets up to return the ball. This school is more than grounds, brick, and mortar. This is a school of people — students, staff, parents, and friends. Our students have gone on to make their mark in prestigious colleges and universities and have served their country and the Eagle Rock community unselfishly for half a century. Our staff- teachers, administrators, and classified-have served the Dis- trict well in the central office and area offices. Our parents and friends, in support of students and staff, have maintained a feeling of community which is particularly unique in large urban areas. This warmth and concern in the Eagle Rock com- munity has never wavered in this last half century. We who now have the rare privilege of working at Eagle Rock High School consider ourselves most fortunate. We are ever mindful of the traditions we have inherited and feel a deep and dedicated obligation to maintain the Eagle Rock tradi- tion. We step into the next half century with a deep sense of hu- mility and a keen awareness of a continued commitment to our students and parents. With the continued support and understanding of the Eagle Rock community, the Eagles will prevail. 220 Faculty Alta-Lee Avant Assistant Principal Douglas Beattie Assistant Principal Baxter Golden Administrative Dean Dorothy Jerneycic Dean Faculty 221 Counselors Mr. Del Rio Tenth grade 3 ' i ' li Miss Hopkins Career Guidance Mrs. Partridge Seventh and Ninth grades y Mr. Schulz SlL i I Eighth and Ninth grades tu t r Mrs. Shore r ' A Eleventh grade w Mrs. Tirado Ninth grade.
