It was on a winter morning in January of 1962 when we, the mighty Tullurian Class of Winter ' 68 took our place on the bot- tom of the Totem Pole. We were ready to take on new responsibilities and complete our secondary education. After becoming acquainted, our class members began joining various clubs such as Treasurettes, Athenians, Wawokyas, Lancers, Boys ' League, Girls ' League, Red Cross, Senate, and Alpha Sigma . After a few semesters, it became evident that certain people were to be our leaders. Incur A-9 semester, Allen Hodges served as Student Body President, Debbie DiBacco, as Vice-President, and Bonnie McGillivary as Secretary. We also elected A -9 class officers who were: Ronald Cody, President; Ernie Herrera, Boys ' Vice-President; Donna Keary, Girls ' Vice-President Leslie Mack, Secretary; Sandy Watson, Treasurer; Ann Wilson, Eagle Scream Representative; Mr. Hodnett, Sponsor. Our big event of that semester was the A-9 vs. B-9 Football game in which we were victorious. The girls who cheered our team on to victory were Shirley Cole, Debbie DiBacco, Bonnie McGillivery, and Luana Thomson. Finally, in January of 1965, our A-9 Graduation Day arrived. We all had a slight case of stage fright during our graduation rehearsals. Our theme was Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow, and those chosen to speak were Robert Anderson, Shirley Cole, Schelly Schwam and Luana Thomson. As we reached Senior High, we started up from tlie bottom again. And new class members soon joined us from Irving Junior High and other surrounding Junior High Schools. At the Tenth Grade Reception, we each chose different paths to take. Our majors ranged from Mathe- matics to Home Economics. Again our class joined the clubs and activities at Eagle Rock High School. By the twelftli grade, we had two Garconettes who were Silvia A Iveraz and Shirley Cole; two Vendeurettes -- Judy Abernathy and Luana Tliomson; seven Kabanokas -- Glemia Collier, Jeanette Don, Chris Guayante, Susie Phillips, Schelly Schwaju, Sandy Watson, and Terry Bemiett; one Key Club member -- Casey John- son; and one Cavalier -- Rod Lawtlirop. Our Classmates also participated in Letterman, Lettergirls, G.A.A., Drill Team, C.S.F., Girls ' Court, and Boys ' Court. The girls froiu our class who were chosen as honorary members of Ladies were: Schelly Schwam, President; Judy Aber- natliy. Secretary; Silvia Alveraz, Jeanette Don, and Luana Thomson. We elected, as our A-11 Officers, Ernie Herrera, President; Joamie Miller, Girls ' Vice-President; Steve Phillips, Boys ' Treasurer; Irene Andal, Girls ' Treasurer; and Debbie DiBacco, Secretary. Sweater day -- the day we had been waiting for since we entered Eagle Rock -- arrived. On March 3, 1967 we surprised everyone, es- pecially the Terranovans, when we ran at lunch rather than at Snack. We shouted our Mighty name to every corner of the campus and proudly displayed our colors of Burgandy and Powder Blue. As a new unified class, we had an unforgettable time at Disneyland. As B-12 ' s, we elected new class officers. Dave Don- ley was our President; Fern Gelbman was Vice-President; Sandy Watson was Secretary; Schelly Schwam was His- torian; Glenna Collier and Jeanette Don were Treasurers. Our next event was putting on die Senior Breakfast. We presented this to the Terranovans under the theme of Builders of die Future. On June 2, 1967, our Senior Prom was held at the Glendale Civic Auditorium where we danced to the theme of The Days of Wine and Roses. We chose as our Tullurian Prom Queen Joanne Miller with Terry Bennett and Marie Mancuso as her Princesses. The girls who were selected to be Ropegirls for the Terranovan graduation were: Jeanette Don, Plead Rope- girl; Glenna Collier, Assistant Head Ropegirl; Terry Ben- nett, Fern Gelbman, Chris Guayante, Shirly Cole, Judy Abernathy, Sandy Watson, Susie Phillips, and Schelly Schwam. As Senior A ' S , we have reached the top of the To- tem Pole. Our class officers of this last semester have been: Robert Maldonad, President; Chris Guyante, Vice- President; Jeanette Don, Secretary; Debbie DiBacco, Treasvirer; Glemia Collier and Luana TTiomson, Class Historians. From our class. Homecoming Candidates were Glenna Collier, Marie Smiley, and Joanne Miller. We can ' t forget Ledo Martinez who has served as one of the best Student Body Presidents that Eagle Rock has ever had. We wish to thank all our teachers, and especially Mr. Schiller, for all the help and guidance we have re- ceived from him. We shall never forget Eagle Rock, its students, and its faculty, for they have been a part of the memories that will remain in the hearts of each and everyone of us for many years to come . Lobrano SUMMER 140 SELEUCIDIANS ' CLASS OFFICERS Dick Sherrick, President; Darlene Costella, Girls ' Vice President; Mellodi Rector, Secretary; Lolita Carbon, Girls ' Treasvtrer; Jeff Thompson, Boys ' Vice President; Cindy Gerardo, Historian. 141 Senior classes come and go, but how did tliey get their Senior status? How did we of Summer 1968 become Swinging Seleucidians? Well, it wasn ' t by osmosis; not by a long shot. It took one year of sandboxes, painting, playing with blocks, running and falling down, and scraping a knee. Hien it took six more years of reading, writing, arithmetic, and learning the fundamentals of flirting! This brought us to the B-7. This is where it really began. Let ' s take a look at Eagle Rock and see what ' s going on. . . Tlie new B-7 ' s were being welcomed. No longer were we children playing in a sandbox, or swinging on a swing, or laboring over some division problems. Rather, we were B-7 ' s in Junior High School, feeling old and experienced and wise. But all our visions of grandeur were far removed from those three years of Junior High School. During the first semester, we made new friends and new enemies, met up with new problems and learned how to solve them, got acquainted with teachers and although we really didn ' t mean to, we gave them some hassles! That was the beginning. To soine a dull beginning; to others a beginning full with the promises of a bright future. Oxir mighty little class, forged ahead. Not wanting to be the spectator type of class, we showed ottr enthusiasm by joining the different Junior High Service Clubs: Adrians, Treasurettes, and Wawokyas. But time melted like a crayon sitting in the sun. Before we realized it, we were B-9 ' s! ! ! It was the day of the A-9 vs. B-9 football game. Our Class Cheerleaders were none otlier than: Gretchen Hanson, Mary Jane Kearl, Laurie Odell, and Gigi Williams. Unfortunately we lost the game. Yet, we didn ' t lose that sense of unity tliat was beginning to form. Our B-9 semester came to a close, and we proceeded to the A-9. We were tops in Junior High School. We made the most of our A-9 semester by choosing a great cabinet. Our Presi- dent was Tim Maarup. Barrie Taylor was Girls ' Vice-President; Jolm Lamon, Boys ' Vice-President; Pam Marsh, Girls ' Treasurer; Paul Thielen, Boys ' Treasurer; and Carmen Langley, Class Historian. We were active in Student Government. Student Body President was Jeff Sherwood; Vice-President was Marilyn Ogg, and Judy Koehler was Student Body Secretary. These officers were no sooner elected, and we found ourselves preparing for graduation. Our speakers at graduation were Beatrice Hogan and Paul Thielen. The winners of the American Legion Award were Betty Jamgotchian and Paul Thielen. After graduation, all we could think about was summer vacation. AA ' e were anticipating the long tanning sessions at the beach. We couldn ' t wait to don our swimsuits ! Right when we were getting to think that this was the life; we were jolted out of our dreams. Summer was nearly over and school was going to be tlie big fad. We returned to Eagle Rock as B-lO ' a and found our class had enlarged to 320. Kids from Luther Burbank and Washing- ton Irving and other schools came to Eagle Rock. Our class was so huge. No one could say they knew everyone in tlie class. In a way it was like the B-7. We encountered many of the same problems. Making new friends wasn ' t easy. It meant breaking away from our own little groups and finding out what the Senior High had to offer us. Well, there were the service clubs, the athletic programs and our counselor, Mr. Urschel. Many of our girls joined the service clubs. Garconettes, Kabanokas, Moshitamoi, and Vendeurettes were all represented by our class. They boys joined Cavaliers, Key Club and Knights. But serving the school wasn ' t limited to Service Clubs only. Members of our class could be found in Girls ' and Boys ' League, Senate, C.S.F., Leadership, Concert Choir, Pep Club, Drama, and Drill Team. The guys in our class went out for sports: Cross-country, Basketball, football, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, and track. All tliese different interests and all this ambition from one class ! In the eleventh grade the Bee Cheerleaders from our class were: Davern Ingram, Kathy Ladra, Barbera Perry, and Barrie Taylor and Chris Ricks. Whenever there was any excitement, the Seleucidians were in the midst of it. Slowly, but surely we were rising to the top. It was in our A-11 semester that things began to happen really fast ! We elected class Officers. Jeff Sherwood, Presi- dent; Dick Sherrick, Vice-President; Kathy Surrey, Secretary; Davern Ingram, Treasurer, and Judy Kane, Historian. These officers worked along with our great sponsor, Mr. Pappas, and in a few weeks we were voting for our class colors and name. We were measured for our sweaters. People began working on our Class Yell and Class Song. At the end of our A-11 semester, we elected officers for our B-12 semester. They were: Paul Thielen, President; Ray Pratt, Vice- President; Gretchen Hanson, Secretary; Paula Judd, Girls ' Treasurer, Ben Henley, Boys ' Treasurer, and Cindy Sin Gerardo, Class Historian. Seleucidians, showing off their character strong and bold, acquired all sorts of honors, such as: Paula Judd, Girls ' State Representative; Mellodi Rector, A.S.B. Vice-President; Chris Ricks, Knight President; Dick Sherrick, Cavalier President; Joanne Ross, Garconette President; Janet Johnson, Vice-President; Kathy Donaldson, Kabanoka President; Merrilee Munson, Vice-President; Marilyn Ogg, Moshitamoi President; Nancy Leonard, Moshitamoi Vice-President; Mabel Chang, Vendeurette President. The Drill Team Captains were chosen: Chris McLean Head Captain. Her Co- Captains were Judy Kane and Judy Koehler. The Varsity Cheerleaders were: Mary Jane Kearl, Head, also Davern Ingram, Barbera Perry, and Barrie Taylor. The Eagle Rock Mascot was Cyna Plazola. The GAA Cheerleaders were Cyna Plazola and Carmen Langley, Penny Costella and Dianne Winnie. Thus our A-11 semester came to a close with all offices filled and everyone ready to relax, have fun and prepare for our last year at Eagle Rock. September 1967 came to Eagle Rock before it was expected. Arrangenients were made for the B-12 Sweater Day. The girls were told to make gold skirts. The week of October 2, found Senior Bee ' s congregating at Gretchen Hanson ' s home, making pom-poms, memorizing the Class Yell, singing the Class Song. At 6:00 a.m. on October 4, 1968 nine B-12 ' s descended on Gretchen Hanson ' s home. Their Purpose? Filling balloons with helium, of course! ! ! By the time 500 bal- loons were filled, it was 8:50. A mad dash was made for Eagle Rock High ' s Auditorium. There was to be a class meeting at 9:00. At approximately 10:15 a.m. a group of people started chanting the name Seleucidians! Seleucidians! We were : off and running! All over the campus anywhere a person looked, all that could be seen were our glorious colors of Olive Green and Gold. All that could be heard was our Class Yell and Class Song, sung to the tune of Born Free . 4 -i SELEUCIDIAN CLASS HISTORY After Snack, about 25 Seleucidians and the B-12 Cabinet met at a local eatery, (By local eatery we don ' t mean the school cafeteria). After tliis we reluctantly returned to school in time for fourth period, but at lunch we left again--this time for Disneyland. Class spirit and enthusiasm was infectious and all day Disneyland was dotted with Olive Green and Gold. That night on the way home, in the midst of all the yelling, singing and excitement, Linda Avignone offered her house for a Seleucidian Class Party. Naturally, no one was in the mood to head home, so off we went to Linda ' s. Who cared about school the next day? We were one class, one spirit, enjoying each other ' s friendship. We were secure in the knowledge that Seleucidians of Summer 1968 were the supreme rulers of Eagle Rock High. It could be said that tilings went back to normal. But what is normal for Seleucidians? Normal is having a gossip column in the Eagle ' s Scream and putting pictures in the Senior Case. Normal for Seleucidians means that fifteen of the eighteen Homecoming Candidates are Seleucidians. The fifteen were: Lolita Carbon, Rita Guayante, Robin Hunter, Davern Ingram, Joanne Jackson, Gaye Kailey, Mary Jane Kearl, Kathy Ladra, Carol Matthews, Chris McLean, Laurie Cindy Gerardo Odell, Marilyn Ogg, Cyna Plazola, Joanne Ross, and Barrie Taylor. Normal is the entire Homecoming Court made up of Seleucidians. Our queen was Mary Jane Kearl, Her court consisted of: Joanne Ross, Joanne Jackson, Barrie Taylor, and Cyna Plazola. Taking the League Title in Varsity and Bee Football was also normal for Seleucidians. Was it normal for us to lose in the first round of city play-offs? Well, let ' s take a step back and look at the goings on of that day. . . The Drill Team had decorated the Boys ' Gym that morning. The guys were eating, sleeping, walking, talking, and breathing football. The girls were praying and hoping right along witli them. Yet, for some unknown reason we weren ' t going to win the game. It was to be the last football game of tlie season. The last football game that Seleucidian greats such as: Dave Brown, Rick Florita, Jim Martin, Jim Herling, Alex Nogales, Tom Impllazzo, Dean Carriger, and Greg Westbrook (to name only a few) would play for Eagle Rock. This was the last time that Drill Team Captains Cliris McLean, Judy Kane and Judy Koehler would be leading Drill Team on to the field at half-time. Never again would Mary Jane, Davern, Barbera, or Barrie look up at the crowd attending an Eagle Rock night football game and say, C ' mon everybody yell ! Tell those guys you love them ! Never again would any Seleucidian sing the Alma Mater at the end of an Eagle Rock football game as a member of the student body. We lost the game and that night it rained. It was as though nature was crying with tlie Seleucidians. Sunny Days came again. The rain disappeared, but tlie memory remained. On January 17, 1968, we presented the Tulliirians with their Senior Breakfast. The theme was Tropical Enchantinent . Part of the entertainment was a Kazoo Band led by Paul Thielen. The Ropegirls were announced. They were: Joanne Jackson, Head Ropegirl, Rita Guayante, Assistant Ropegirl, Merrillee Munson, Carol Lea, Laura Dorr, Katliy Donaldson, Judy Koehler, Janet Johnson, Mcllodi Rector, Gay Kailey, Rita Strafford, Linda Grill, Barrie Taylor, Chris McLean, Judi Leitch, Paula Judd, Barbara Wolkosz, and Kathy Hostetter. Once again as our semester ended, we chose new Class Officers. Those we bestowed this honor on were: Dick Sherrick, Seleucidian President; Penny Costella and Dean Carriger, Vice-Presidents; Mellodi Rector, Secretary; Lolita Carbon and Jeff Thompson, Treasurers; and Cindy Sin Gerardo Seleucidian Historian. The new officers in Student Government were; Ben Henley, President; Larry Speck, Vice-President; Joanne Jackson, Secretary; Pat Bolger, Boys ' League President; Stan Fain, Associate Chief Justice. The Club Presidents were: Judy Koehler, Garconettes, Merrilee Munson, Kabanokas; Marilyn McKinney, Moshitamoi; Jan Seymour, Vendeurettes; Chris Ricks, Knights; Dick Sherrick, Cavaliers. Then the day came. March 27, 1968, the Valhallans decided to run. Breaking tradition, they ran out to the Girls ' Field where they let their balloons fly high. But as always, we Seleucidians nipped them in the bud. We decided that maybe we should let tliem join us on Senior Lawn. This they did, but cautiously. Class rivalry continued, but Seleucidians had to attend to other tilings. We had to make plans for college, work, and the service. Mr. Flanders was our counselor now, and it was through Mr. Flanders and Mr. Harada that we planned our futures. Our Senior Prom was to be held at the Castaways. The Valhallans were to attend also. As our graduation theme we chose, A Generation That Will Succeed . Mr. Pappas, our class sponsor, helped us out when difficulties concerning graduation came up. Mr. Pappas it is to you that we are so very grateful. We ' d like to thank you so much for your vitality, guidance and words of encouragement and criticism. Without our Counselors, and the Eagle Rock Administration, we couldn ' t have gotten very far. But without Mr. Pappas, our Class wouldn ' t be the most spirited, enthusiastic Senior Class that Eagle Rock has seen for a long time. Now we leave Eagle Rock with many memories. The Prom, Graduation, Grad Night, the Sweetheart Swing, the Hobo Hobble, Homecoming. But what we will cherish most is walking down tlie hall between classes and saying hi to our friends; trying to find a seat at the assemblies; yelling at football and baseball games; singing Green and Gray after each Touchdown; running to class only to have the bell ring as you entered the door, coming early for Drill Team, Club meetings, getting out of Class for Senate meetings, Totem Pictures, field trips, eating Lunch on the Senior Lawn. So many warm memories of such common, everyday happenings. Everyday happenings made special because they in- volved a group of individuals known as Seleucidians. Seleucidians whose magnificence and dynamic approach gave everyone and everything at Eagle Rock an opportunity to glow and grow with tliem. Through a talent for photography and expert training by Mr. Born, Gary and the photo production staff were able to meet the required standards of photography essential to a good yearbook. My sincere thanks to Mr. Born, Gary La Fleur, and Dunlap-Turney for providing me with the tools essential to the creation of this yearbook-good photo prints. BREUER IS LEAVING Our head custodian, Mr. Breuer is retiring at tlie end of this semester after serving here for thirty- four years. Mr. Breuer claims that the 1966 City Playoff game, against Reseda, was one of his most memorable experi- ences concerning Eagle Rock. Mr. Breuer further claims that the spirit here at Eagle Rock runs as high today as when it did when he first came here in September 1934. The responsibilities Mr. Breuer held were opening and closing the buildings, checking to make sure the heating, lighting and other utilities are always in good working order, besides keeping our campus looking its best. The Totem has always been a source of enjoyment for Mr. Breuer. The custodian has a large collection of vintage Totems, as does his son who attended Eagle Rock as a student and graduated in 1951. His other children also graduated from Eagle Rock, a daughter in 1955, and another son in 1959. Mr. Breuer has always been a source of enjoyment to the Totem, the book, as well as the student body of Eagle Rock will surely miss him. FARWELL MR.
