SUTCLIFFE QVJJLJ When school opened in the fall, Eagle Rock students discovered they had a new Principal. Mr. Robert E. Kell , who had been Principal at Eagle Rock since 1945, had been promoted to a new position at the main office of the AXVC4' X Board of Education. 1 Our new Principal, Mr. Charles E. Sutcliffe, came to us from Hollywood High School, where he was Boys, - ' A Principal. Before going to Hollywood he had been boys' Vice-Principal at Narbonne and at Wilson High Scho l. f 1 During World War II he had served in thc Air Force with the rank of captain at the time of h' ischarge ' ' l 1946. X f' i For allof us at Eagle Rock this has been a year filled with other new experiences: increased gro h, new m- A-,Jigga hers on the faculty, new interests, new organizations, and new honors for the school. As we look bac ve can think of X so many activities, some along new lines, for example the Science Fair. There have been more students interested , in all activities. ' Surely for Eagle Rock, for our new Principal, for all of us, this has been a wonderful year, one whic we shall all remember with pride. , Ui Page hree - S, CALENDAR EOR FALL SEMESTER .,- . 15.51 if ln!-' E 712, 1. 4 ...Tw .. nv lllllill i. Mm Continental Song NVC are the Continentals, the Continentals, the class of Summer 54. YVC stand by our name and our colors so true VVe're known around the world as the class of white and blue. Continentals, Continentals, we are the class that tops them all. As you look down the steps on Eagle Rock High plaques youall see Continentals. the Continentals, the class of summer fifty-four. VNV! ..,i'it'.. me 5..:..u. 3 . 9'-I I' M the Continental History Our years at Eagle Rock all began when we Hrst entered school in September, 1948, to be dazzled by the unfamiliarity of the school and its teachers. After just being the top ones from our respective grammar schools, the lowliness of becoming f'scrubs was much different, but we soon got used to it. These next two years passed pretty fast, and our officers we chose to lead us through the ninth grade were: Tommy Averill, President, Sharon Richards, Girls' Vice-President, Stephen Stout, Boys' Vice-President, Dixie Bailey, Secretary, Linda Willis, Girls' Treasurer, Robin Walker, Boys' Treasurer. Before we knew it, we found ourselves preparing for our next big step-Junior High Graduation, which was held at the Sylvan Theater, June 13, 1951. That night we all went to Hollywood to have dinner at the Tick Tock , and then to Boo Line's house for a party. When we returned to school the next September, we found ourselves being very active in high school activities, for we were now Sophomores, Others joined us from nearby schools, which meant a bigger class, and new friends. In the A-ll our class became quite an organized body, and we were led by our President Glenn Graham and sponsor Mr. Van Patten. This Was the semester when we chose our name, colors, song, and were awaiting anxiously Sweater Day , when we could reveal ourselves as Contincntals . Finally the summer was over, September returned, and we were ofiicially Seniors. Those ofiicers we chose to lead us through our Senior B semester were as follows: Gary Holland, President, Gail Grieve, Girls' Vice-President, Bob Kerrebrock, Boys' Vice-President, Connie Oxley, Secretary, Phyllis Barba, Girls' Treasurer, Gary Cooper, Boys' Treasurer, and Jacque Kolar, Historian. Wle were granted such privileges as the Senior Case, a column in the Eagle's Scream, and we could now legally eat our lunch out on the Senior Lawn. On Friday. October 2, 1953, we proclaimed our grandeur as f'Continentals , and displayed that beautiful monaco blue and white. Sweater Day was a day none of us will ever forget in our high school memories. VVe topped off this day by a class dinner at the Carolina Pines and a wonderful party at Dee Dingman's house following the dinner. Then came the beautiful prom we gave in honor of the Phoenicians on January 8. 1954, 'fVisions of Venice , followed by our Senior Breakfast, 'fShip Ahoy on January 13. After twenty-four girls from our class had been chosen as Rope Girls, and graduation was over, then it came at last-Your Senior Aye semester! It's funny, this is some- thing you wish for, but when it comes, you wish it wasn't here yet, because it goes so fast! In this, our last semester, we chose our final ofiicers: Don Bowman, President, Dixie Bailey, Girls' Vice-President, Robin VValker, 'Boys' Vice-President, Marilyn Moore, Secretary, Shirley Brennan. Girls' Treasurerg Cary Cooper, Boys' Treasurer, and Jacque Kolar, Historian. The first activity to start us off was our Senior Reception, given in honor of our parents, held in the auditorium on March 4, 1954, with refreshments in the cafeteria following. Also in this semester the Bank of America Award Finalists were announced Pat Magee, Jacque Kolar, Gretchen Rupp, and Carolyn Thomas. Our Pin Day finally came on April 2. This day was another one full of excite- ment, which endcd with a class party at Milt Morris' house. Ephebians chosen around this time were Bob Kerrebrock, John Power, Robin VValker, Carolyn Thomas, and Larry Allmon. Our Senior Picnic came on May 25 g the beautiful Prom, Hlnvitation to a Dream was given to us by the Polynesians on Mag 28, and our Senior Breakfast came on June 15. When 'Baccalaureate came the Sunday before graduation, it really made us realize that our days were but few in number till we would be leaving our Alma Mater. The dav of davs finally came on June 17, 1954, in the Oxy Hillside Theater. when all our efforts of learning at Eagle Rock High School were brought to a close. VVe leave now with happiness in our accomplishments, but sad to leave the things and people we loved, and who helped us in our many problems. Our sponsor, Mr, Van Patten, will especially Lang be rernembered for his help to our class. The lessons we learned here at Eagle Rock will never be forgotten. Respectfully submitted, Jacque Kolar, Historian. Soon we were chasing each other down the halls and sliding down the bannisters. It semmed a long time, though, till we should reach the glorihed state of seniors. Right away we took interest in our sehool's activities and attended the sports events. The girls joined Wawokiyas. Later the boys stirred themselves to join the Lancers. In no time we were A-9's and in that semester we brought ourselves to the attention of all by the reputation of a fun-loving and mischievous class. Mr. Hodnett was our wonderful sponsor and Bob Mayorga claimed the job of class president. VVe ended our junior high school days with a graduation in the auditorium on january 27, 1952. That night with our new suits and the smell of gardenias in the air we had a never-to-be-forgotten party at Sue Goodwin's house. XNith much speculation and anticipation we entered the B-10 to meet and get acquainted with the new B-10,5 from Irving. Interest accelerated as we joined service clubs such as Garconettes. Kabanokas, Vendeurettes, Knights and Squires. Gur boys were seen more in sports events. In the A-ll we organized our growing class and elected officers, which were: President, Butch Mitchell, Vice-Presidents, Ron Brown and Carol Stonebrakerg Secretary, Diane Fisher, Treasurcrs. Juanita DeFoor and Bill Stansberryg and Historian, Marie Haning. Then after mueh debate we chose our class colors of red and gray and the POLYNESIANS became our name. Two weeks after we gained the longed-for title of Senior Bees, we bared the secret of our mighty name and colors to all. VVe celebrated the day by going to the ghost town at Knotts, Berry Farm. After dinner there, we gathered at john Cashionls house for a class party. It was one of the best parties we've had. Punch and cookies were servedg everyone danced and had fun. ,, nv 7 We elected class ofiicers for the B-l2. Bob Mzxyorga was Presidentg Vice-Presidents were Bill Stans- berry and Diane Fisher, Secretary, Marie Haningg Treasurers, Ron Brown and Eva Meyer, and His- torian, Barbara Karrasch. Senior privileges were allotted to us. INe had a column in the Eagle Scream where all the class gossip and news was aired. The senior lawn became our special place to eat lunch along with the Senior A's. And you all know what a success the Prom, 'glnvitation to a Dream turned out to be that we gave the Continentals. Everyone looked very pretty in their new formals and suits. Next we had our breakfast and everyone had a gay time eating their fill. The entertainment was terrific. , Soon we shall graduate and start lives separate from our friends and our school. A few of us will get married, some will go to college and others will start on new jobs. But, I doubt if any of us will forget the fond memories that Eagle Rock High has given us. Varsity Football The Eagle Rock Eagles opened their '53 season with a very young team and a new head coach, Mr. Roy Jae, who was assistant coach previous to this year, and a new assistant coach, Mr. Joe Kelly. The Eagles lost their first three practice games to North Hollywood, San Fernando, and Canoga Park by scores of 6-0, 35-6, and 28-0. However, the team was much better than the scores seemed to indicate, and the coaching staff was still in hopes of a good team. But having lost most of last ycar's first two strings proved to be too much for the Eagles and they lost their first league game to Wilson by a 32-U score. The Eagles entered the Franklin game as a five-touchdown under-dog. How- ever they battled their hearts out and emerged from the game trailing only by 7 points, the final score being 14-7. This gave the team new hope, but during the week they lost five first stringers due to injuries, and the Lincoln Tigers handed the Eagles the worst beating in their history by a score of 55-U. Part of the defeat could be blamed on injuries, but it was quite clear that the Eagles were not pulling together, yet. After the defeat the Eagles got fighting mad and settled down to hard work, coming back to whip the Marshall Barristers to the tune of 21-O. The Eagles ended the season by losing to Verdugo Hills by a 19-2 score, and finished the sea- son in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Northern League. The team was spearheaded all year by three Seniors: Brent johnson, Paul Cosgrove, and Edwin Powell. Brent, who was a find during the 1953 track season, proved to be a very satisfactory leatherlung this year. The team went through the practice schedule fairly well, being beaten by San Fernando and Garfield who went on to be high up in the city. After two practice meets the Eagles ran away with the league which was supposed to be a duel between our neighbor over the hill and Verdugo Hills. The boys on our team had other ideas about this, and in the second meet of league competition they knocked Franklin all over their own lot. The Eagles kept right on rolling until the last league meet. Verdugo came down out of the hills to be nosed out in a very close meet by our Eagles. In 1952 the Eagles lost the crown by one point to Franklin. This year they couldn't be denied and won the last meet and the Championship by one p01nt. Lincoln and Marshall tied for first place. From the two who tied for first and the two who tied for last place, there were only 2 or 3 points difference. Mr. Elmore was not too pleased with his team this year. He said he felt Hthe boys were capable of doing better than they didn. Steve Stewart was a constant threat to his opponents. He made second string All League this year. He also made it last year. A lot of credit goes to Steve. We will miss him next year. The top scores were Steve Stewart with 129 points, Don Embury with 94 points, Mike Ellis with 76 points, and Robin Walker with 72 points. Glenn Graham, who didnlt show up too well on the score board, was probably the best defensive man on the squad. Dave Dorman led the BH team with his fine shooting, and sparked the team all around. The 'SCP team missed the Championship by l point. They were sparked by Ken Kilpatrick and Phil Crispi. The MDN team also did well. Freedoms Foundation Award Five years ago, before there had been any thought of the war in Korea, live principals of girls? high schools in Korea spent a day at Eagle Rock High School, accompanied by Mrs. Mary Shon, who acted as their interpreter. An assembly was held and information concerning the Korean schools was given. It was shocking and hard to believe that the school children of Korea under the greatest educational handicaps could be starved for an education. This assembly impressed students so seriously that before the principals had left the school, the wheels were set in motion to organize a club for the purpose of raising money to send school supplies to Korea. The voluntary giving has held constant over this entire period since the club was started. Membership in the club was opened to girls after the first three semesters. The mem- bers do not receive service points, belonging simply because they enjoy this kind of activity and receive a thrill from meet- ing and working with the Korean people. During the first three semesters 3285.94 was collected, and one shipment of school supplies, including a microscope, books, paper, and pencils, was sent to Korea. During the war the contributions were allowed to ac- cumulate until direct aid could be sent to schools needing help. When the newspapers reported Mrs. Van Fleet's visit to her husband, General James Van Fleet in Korea in November, 1952, the club sponsor wrote to Mrs. Van Fleet seeking her aid in choosing a school which could be adopted. Mrs. Van Fleet selected Yangju Elementary School as deserving Eagle Rock's help. Anxious to reach its S1000 goal, the Korean Club sponsored an assembly and a special drive. The special collection of Page Eighty-six 3124.43 'put the fund over the top, and on the following Friday, February 27, 1953, the First S1000 bank draft was mailed to Lt. General Kendall in Korea. He personally super- vised the buying of the much-needed supplies. A special presentation ceremony was held at the Yangju School when the school supplies were received. Many pictures and a tape recording of the program were sent to the club. More recently three more checks each for S300 have been sent to the adopted Korean school. Learning about the Freedoms Foundation, the club decided to submit a project in hopes of gaining recognition for their activities. For over six months, members planned and worked to prepare the project. It was a beautiful book containing letters from army personnel, the tape recording, pictures of the presentations of the school supplies, and the personal evalua- tions of the club members. On George Washington's birthday earlier this year, the club learned that their project had received a principal school award, consisting of a George Washington gold honor medal, an historical library of books, films, and documents, and an all-expense trip to Valley Forge for Mrs. Vida Shields, past club sponsor, and Dennis Peters, charter member of the club. The great success of the club can be attributed to Mrs. Shields and Mrs. Helen Yeaton, new sponsor, whose untiring efforts have instilled enthusiasm in the club members. Special credit should also be given seniors Larry Allmon, Pat Magee, Joe Byrne, Don Sharpe, and to Donna McMillan and Evelyn Lobek. Through the Korean Club, Eagle Rock High School is helping the Korean school children to help themselves through education. Administration Wx wr- ,K 'XJ MR. -IOI-IN E. LANZ. Rvgi.vtmr: MR. WALTER G.
