The general publuc has judged that South Amerucan people as a whole are not educated ln the past perhaps thus was so but not at the present day Though the ulluteracy rate us hugh the government us struvung now to estab lush schools among the natuves un the outlyung vullages So far educatuon us compulsory for sux years ln the past pupuls were sent to European unuversu tues un Spaun France and Germany The e unstututuons had more prestuge than the Amerucan ones At present an effort us beung made to uncrease understandung between the Amerucan countrues by exchangung scholarshups wuth voung people from dufferent famulues Though the South Amerucan unuversutues are few there are fuve un the Latun Amerucan countrues that are older than Harvard The oldest of these fuve us San Marcos Unuversuty un Luma Peru South Amerucan and Mexucan schools are un three classes The prumary schools are for sux years and are compulsory Many people however are not reached by these schools Secondary school us preparatuon for college and when a student goes on he us attendung the unuversuty A great deal has been done toward furtherung unuversuty educatuon The tropucal clumate and far flung vullages tend to keep the ulluteracy rate hugh un the southern natuons but the people who are fortunate enough to be able to attend school fund that the eagerness to learn creates much cornpetutuon un scholastuc work especually un the hugher schools We do not realuze how hard those people work to secure an educatuon whule we grumble about havung to funush hugh school Perhaps uf we were to change places wuth these students un South Arneruca, we would realuze our many chances for advancement and make the most of the many opportunutues offered here un the Unuted States . .
