0 In l93O the fnrst Totem was publnshed It was a small paper bound book hardly more than a pamphlet but It was the beglnnnng of a tradltnon one whtch was upheld even through the hard years by an ambltuous staff and a supporting student body ln l933 at the height of the depression the Totem was prlnted and put together nn the school prunt shop It consisted of about thrrty pages was Issued semu annually and sold for twenty flve cents To us such a book seems small and incapable of representing our school but nts publncatton at that time showed that to the student body the year book was nmportant As times became more prosperous the Totem Increased nn slze and excellence addeng many new features The plan by which the staff was gaven a perlod and school crednt for :ts work resulted In good work and a fanr dustrubutnon of responsubllrty In l94O although the number of subscruptnons dnd not warrant a school year book the staff got out a Sensor book Ilmnted ln scope to the sensor class tnterests The next year because of Inadequate student support no book was publlshed But many among the students and faculty dad not wnsh to gzve up thus tradrtlonal feature of our school lnfe Begmnnng ln September l94l a group of students representung the drfferent met each Thursday morning under Sumner Davls as charrman and edntor for the wunter term An annual In place of the former sem: annual was planned the theme chosen and work started The drnve for subscriptions promlsed adequate student support In the sprung term these meetungs were abandoned and the work was continued under the sponsors with Francesse Altheuser edltor for the summer term Bully Barnett assistant editor and Mary Lou Matthews assocuate editor working during the suxth pernod and after school getting the maternal for the book together The cover was designed by Elleen Bolz and the very effectnve block prrnts made by Llllle Ann Klllen The wrnte ups and feature themes were handled by Marguerite Barte and Ernest Bouveron of the winter class and Beryl l-lazelton Bull Barnett, Lots Maag Ruth Kratz Dean Paul of the summer class Dawn Schroeder and Margle Bays took charge of the calendar Bob Odell reported the athletnc events All of these contrubuted capably to the publnshung of thus book Wuth grateful acknowledgments to all who have had a part In maknng thus book and to the sponsors we the editors now present to you the student body the l942 Totem Although condutlons of National Defense have made the work more dufflcult the book has been completed We hope thus record of the year s actnvutues wall be a loved and valued possession FRANCESSE ALTHEUSER classes, sponsored by Mr. Dutcher, Mrs. Vaudreuil, Miss Wood, and Mr. Stock,

A pledge a vow a sacred trust Amerucans All We have pledged ourselves to be loyal true and wullung to give we vow to keep our country a free nation forever and we are entrusted wuth the sacredness of the consideration and understanding of other peoples especially those of our own hemisphere Our Southern neughbors are of other creeds nationalities and beluefs ut us true They are not a truce race but a mixture of many as we are un the states for people from all over the world have come to our land and untermarrued Does the fact that our southern friends have a darker coloring keep us from real uzung that they are Amerucans too as well as we who are so fortunate as to be luvung here un the Unuted States? They wull fight and due for freedom s cause as quickly as any of our boys here at home We are a unuted people un udeals for we all wish to continue un our own rughts and beliefs Since this us so we as a continent and as separate people must be held together by strong bands of unuty un all ways In selecting a theme for the Totem of l942 students realuzed that they should center their attention on some larger topic than just our own Unuted States Thus the theme Amerucans All was chosen speaking not only of the Unuted States but of all those people luvung un the two great contunents of America We Iuttle realuze the vast area of our fellow continent to the south that theur students have much more competition un securing an edu these people regardless of color race or creed are uust as much American as any one luvung un California or New York lt was un the realization of thus fact that the theme was chosen Throughout the year Eagle Rock Hugh School has endeavored to brung about a closer understanding of our South American friends Exhibits sponsored by the art teachers have been on display un the showcase illustrating the types of work and play of these people The World Friendship and Scholar ship Societies have been entertained by speakers from these countries Thus showing of good wull un our school along wuth the duscussuons on the subject of all the people un the western hemisphere and not just of the people un the Unuted States has noticeably tightened the bonds of relationship between our two vast contunents Students often carry on correspondence with South American young people Only lately has thus unter American wrutung been carrued on to any great ex tent Thus wrutung acquaunts the students wuth the dufferent conditions un the two contunents theur school systems student government actuvutues and so forth lt is altogether futtung that we should realuze that we un the Unuted States are not the only Amerucans existing for though they are of dufferent background they are our neughbors and are unuted with us un a struggle to preserve undependence through unuty We are all one, unuted un freedom guuded by the torch of luberty Amerucans All cationg their educational systems are more intense in the higher gradesg that
