SHEPARD Vice-Principal FACULTY MARGARET MILLS NOE Vice-Principal This page is devoted to expressing our appreciation to the faculty for the assistance they have given us, both as teachers and as counselors. They have helped to shape our lives and have guided us in the choice of a career. The greatest change in our faculty this term was the transfer of Mr. Franklin, boys' vice-principal, to Polytechnic High School. Mr. Franklin was a member of the original faculty of this school. He was replaced by Mr. Shepard of Verdugo Hills, who was for- merly with the physical education department at Eagle Rock. Other new faculty members included Mr. Carter, Mr. Cochran, Mrs. Goetten and Mr. Nott. 'W- STUDENT BCDDY CABINET The most important student organization in our school is the Cabinet. lt began its work at the opening of the school, and the members of this organization drew up Eagle Rock High School's first constitution. Since then the Cabinet has supervised the many modi- fications and changes made in our constitution. The Cabinet is the student advisory organization in the school and advises the student body president on various student body affairs. Each term the members of the Cabinet decide upon a goal which they hope to achieve by the end of the term. This term the Cabinet, under the able leader- ship of Blake Blakey, chose the bringing about ofacloser and more friendly understano- ing between the students and the faculty, as their goal. Achievement of this goal has been made possible only through the painstaking work of each individual and the thorough cooperation of all. Thanks are to be given the entire Cabinet for its fine work, which required much time and thought. Special mention must be made of Bill Bonelli, who as Commissioner of Forensics has given us so many outstanding assemblies. Another noteworthy Cabinet member was Ed Brearton, the Commissioner of Publicity, He has done an excellent job of keeping us informed on the various student activities. The position of sponsor, which is probably the most difficult of all, was held by the popu- lar and very busy Mr. Dingilian. Reading from left to right:-Blake Blakey, student body president, Jack Adams, vice-president, Vlasta Nosek, Girls' League president, Roger DeYoung, secretary, Harold Bentley, Esquires president, William Newton, Boys' Advisory Council judge, Patricia Raplee, Girls' Advisory Council judge, William Bonelli, commissioner of forensics, Betty Sapper, Totem co-editor, John Dahlgren, commissioner of finance, Jean Ruh, commissioner of interscholastics and public relations, Edward Brearton, commissioner of publicity, Mary Murray, Totem co-editor, Dick Doty, commissioner of safety, Mary Alice Harkness, commissioner of social functions, Bob Rorex, yell leader, Ann Cypert, Eagle's Scream editor. . , - -,.,, L.,,,A ai QU' SENATE The students of Eagle Rock are given the opportunity to govern themselves, within certain limits, of course. Under the very capable hand of our student body vice-president, Jack Adams, the Senate carried on activities that in many ways correspond to those of our United States Senate. The Senate's primary function is to make the rules and regulations to which the students must adhere, and to bring the problems of the students before the officials and see if something can't be done about them. Mr. Dingilian was the sponsor and general adviser and served very commend- ably in this capacity. First row: Corrinne Johnson, Marilynn Millar, Wilma Blakey, Jack Adams, Roger Winningham, Dan Lyons, Charles Rains, Bob Kelley, Warren Reed, Harry Bill- DeYoung, June Bradshaw, Eleanor Axe, Beverly Andrews.-Second row: Sue ingsley, Vivian Jones.-Third row: Don Rudeen, Don Willumsen, Glen Osborne. BUYS' and GIRLS' ADVISGRV CGLJNCILS The purpose of the Boys' and Girls' Advisory Councils this semester has been to democratically advise and help those students having difficulties. Since these councils have been organized they have proved a valuable asset to the school. The Boys' Advisory Council has been under the very able leadership of Bill Newton, while Patricia Raplee has done excellent work with the girls' group. A great deal of the success of the two councils was due to the cooperation of the sponsors, Mrs. Johnson and Mr. DeBra. First row: Mr. DeBra, John Hawthorne, Bob Brooking.-Second row: Martha Pell, John Leslie, Patricia Raplee, Beverlee Andrews.-Standing: Lillian Weinberger, Dick Sutkowski, Bill Newton, Dick Hawthorne. ESQLJIRES The Esquires is an honorary boys' service organization which is new to Eagle Rock high school this semester. lt is dedicated to the furtherance of school spirit and school enterprises. lt is com- posed of eleventh and twelfth grade boys who are chosen for their good fellowship and service to the school. They were capably presided over by John Obidine, who was assisted by Vice-Presi- dent Jerry McNair and Secretary Don Traylor. The sponsor, Mr. Griffin, has done outstanding work furthering the progress of the organization this semester. First row: Bob Campbell, George Sterling, Don Traylor, John Obiline, Jerry Fred Ryder.-Third row: Mr. Griffin, George Normington, Charles Kratka, Warren MacNair, Joe Prather, Blake Blakey, Max Van Horn.-Second row: Gunther Mason, Bill Bonelli, Jack Adams, Wilfred Nielson, Bill Mohr. Many activities were sponsored by League committees during the term. Among these were the convention and the Mother- Daughter Banquet. The convention, which was for Eagle Rock girls only, was planned to be as nearly like the official Girls' League convention as possible. The Mother-Daughter Banquet was a grand success and as usual the climax of the evening was the installation of officers. The Council, consisting of the representative group and the hospitality committee, had charge of the social events. The Welfare Committee had the honor of being the only high school group invited to make regular visits to the Children's Hospital to entertain crippled children. First row: Mary Waldo, Dalone Chisam, Barbara Medler, Vlasta Nosek, Helen Patricia Raplee, Pat Moffett.--Third row: Mary Murray, Jane Duncan, Miriam Donnelley, Elinor Hobart, Betty Sapper.-Second rowz Catherine Engbrecht, Tindell, Virginia Phinney, Lou Anne Lawton, Joan Franklin, Josephine Stark- Ann Cypert, Elizabeth Cox, Merva Karger, Virginia Meyer, Mary Jane Paquet, weather. ASSEIVIBLY CGIVIIVIITTEE The Assembly Committee is an important organization in our school in that it plans entertain- ments for the whole student body. The committee's duty is to schedule and organize all student meetings and assemblies. This term has been very successful under the able leadership of Com- missioner Bill Bonelli and his assistant, Ben Bonelli. All assemblies were of general interest to the entire student body. Committee sponsor was Mr. Culley. Dick Hayton, Ann Sessions, Mr, Culley, Bill Bonelli, Ben Bonelli, Penelope Stevens, Vern Cox. Think of ourselves, our ponderable plight, Visit the deep for awhile tonight. Walk beyond the valley of sleep, Face the problems from which we retreat. Ask why we're here and where next we go, And the many things we want to know. See the Supreme, our Deity meet, Talk to Him and kneel at His feet. Ask Him to end this malignance of life, To speak through His Oracle and lessen our strife. I am as two, you are the same. I am mind and body sometimes broken by strain. Part these for a moment as forward we go, See the unseen, find the truth, really know. But here we are, coasting along, Taking a small part, just singing a song. Think tonight of thoughts and from where they come And then at least you can say, l've begun. CLASS HISTORY OF THE VEOMEN For eleven years classes have been passing from lowly B7's to distinguished senior ayes. Some of these classes were average and others were superior. So much for the first eleven years. But in February of i934 there came to Eagle Rock High School a twelfth and different class, destined to be the class of W'4O. Officers chosen in the Senior Bee semester were Harold Bentley, president, Kenneth Holsapple, vice-president, Joy Weaver, secretary, Mary Murray, girls' treasurer, Don Graves, boys' treasurer, and Bernard Rosenbaum, historian. One of the most important social events in this semester was the Prom given in honor of the S'39 class. Every phase of this Prom with its theme of a spring garden, was carried out with such oomph that it was recognized as the most successful ever. The name of Yeomcn was chosen to typify the spirit and char- acter of the class. Never could the merry Robin Hood and his Yeomen have displayed such life as have his disciples, the Yeomen cf W'4O. The colors of green and biege were chosen with the emblem using the cap with the feather and the arrow of Robin Hood. Officers selected for the final semester of the class were Hoyt Smith, president, Zelta Burrows, vice president, Elinor Wolters, secretary, Betty Kinney, girls' treasurer, Gunther Hunrichs, boys' treasurer, and Don Graves, historian. The senior aye semester saw many parties, the like of which may never be seen again. Outstanding among the contribu- tions to the pleasure of the school was the Senior Aye Talent Assembly, which again brought to light the fact that among the ranks of the Yeomen are some of the most talented students ever to attend Eagle Rock High School. After this assembly the mothers and girls gathered in the cafeteria to discuss graduation attire. Pin Day was held December l4, l939. The Ephebians of the class were Vlasta Nosek, Virginia Meyer, and David Bryant. A traditional Plaque Day ceremony was the last event before com- mencement. A distinguished graduation ceremony ended the eventful and worthwhile visit of the Yeomen of W'4O at Eagle Rock High School. I ATHLETICS The Eagle Rock football teams fared exceptionally well this year, winning championships in both Varsity and B divisions. The B squad was unbeaten and untied in a league play, while the Varsity had a 6 to 6 tie with Canoga Park to mar their otherwise perfect slate. Both teams started the season with a practice tilt with Belmont, the Varsity winning l3 to lZ, and the B's losing 6 to O. Both squads beat Eagle Rock's traditional rival, Franklin High, by scores of l3 to 6 and l5 to O for the Varsity and B's respectively. The Varsity then received the only blemish on their record, the tied score with Canoga Park, while the little boys came through with a i9 to 6 win. ln the next contest, San Fernando was beaten twice: l3 to O by the Varsity and 7 to O by the B's. The next week, the B team stole the spotlight by crushing Verdugo Hills 58 to O, while their big brothers were content with a l2 to 0 victory. Van Nuys yas the next victim, bowing l3 to O in both contests, and the season's finale found the North Hollywood Huskies going down to defeat, 25 to O, at the hands of the heavyweights, and 6 to O at the hands of the Eaglets. The Varsity placed three men on the honorary All San Fernando Valley League team first string and three on the second string. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSGCIATICDN Under the able leadership of Catherine Engbrecht, Laycene Van Valkenburg, Virginia Perry and Virginia Meiding, the G.A.A. term has been very successful. The main objectives of the organiza- tion are to promote sports and improve the health of the girls. The Eagle Rock G.A.A. attended two play days this semester, one at North Hollywood and the other at Fairfax. Both were greatly enjoyed by the girls. The different sports for the semester were tennis, badminton, volleyball, hockey, speedball, archery and basketball. The semester was climaxed by the Annual Spread, which was held at the close of the term. The G.A.A. Cabinet is composed of the officers, the mana- gers, the yell leaders, and the membership chairmen. This term the Cabinet had as its meeting place the old Safety Office. The girls are trying to make a club room out of it and have started by making curtains and putting up shelves and pictures.
