FL' - SUMMARY OF 1950-'51 FOOTBALL SEASON ' by Frank Lopez Starting from almostnothing, Coach John Brightwell assembled a fairly effective foot- ball eleven from the remains of last year's mediohcre team, Spending his first year at E, P,H.S. , Coach Brightwell, admired and respected by all his boys, led the Eagles to a six Won, four lost season. The season opened with a bang as Budgie Smith carried the opening kick-off right up the middle for a touchdown against the Saltillo Agriculture Col- lege. The Eagles chalked up three victories before Cotulla stepped in and ended the party. The Eagles then dedicated their next game to Rudy Gonzalez, who was in the hospital suffering from an infected rib. The Eagles drubbed the San Felipe Mustangs 38 to 6. Next in the highlights of the season came the Carriizo game, played in Eagle Pass on Friday 13. The Eagles took advantage of the jinx and beat the Wildcats 14 to 7 for the first time in four years.. The game that highlighted the season for the Eagles, was the victory over the Del Rio Wildcats. The Eagles ended a ten-year losing streak by defeating the Wildcats 32 to 6. The mighty Eagles in losing 7 to 6 to Uvalde played the hardest, most unforgettable game of the season. ' SUMMARY OF 1950-'51 BASKETBALL SEASON Coach Ancel Newman gathered nine green, inexperienced boys around tall Robert Moreno to mold the 1951 cage team. Moreno was the only returning man off the team that had won district and consolation at the Regional Tournament. Moreno, being the only veteran, carried the greater part of the load. Early in the season, Coach Newman took his cagers to the San Antoniolnvitational Tournament where the Eagles beat Edison 38 to 37, and lost to Hot Wells 38 to 50. Coach Newman was with the boys only as far as the end ofthe first round of district play after which the boys dedicated four victories to their hospitalized mentor. Inspired by their absent coach, the Eagles stepped over Pearsall, Crystal City, Carrizo, and Cotulla. Highlighting the Eagles last games were Tom I..ane's 20 points at Del Rio, and his 30 points in the Pearsall game. The Eagles won ten out of the twenty-two games that they played. SUMMARY OF 1950-'51 BASEBALL SEASON The baseball team in 1951 took the district title for the second year in a row. Led by Coaches John Brightwell and Donald Crouch, the Eagles had a district record of three losses and nine wins. Bobby Sumpter doubled as a pitcher and as the Eagles' clean-up batter, Assisting Bobby in the hitting department were the centerfielder and lead-off man Mundo Meza, third baseman Humberto Rodriguez., and second-baseman Rolando Moncada, To win the bi-district title the Eagles defeated Edgewood twice, 6-O, and 4-2. Ro- lando Moncada pitched both games, pitching a one -hit shut out the first game, and slug-7 ging two home runs, one with two men on base, in the second game to account for all the Eagle scoring. The Eagles lost the regional play-offs to Mission, who defeated the Eagles in the first two games of a three-game series. 4 EAGLE PASS BASEBALL TEAM RECEIVES BI-DISTRICT CUP FRONT ROW: Angel Garcia, Alejandro Guedea-Manager, Julian Coronado-Official, Cy Tate, Rolando Moncada, Hector Ibancovichi, Humberto Rodriguez, Jose Gomez-Manager, Miguel Velez, Sergio Aguirre, Coach Brightwell. SECOND ROW: Mundo Meza, Jimmy Lopez, Jose Casales, Oscar Tijerina, Coach Crouch, Roberto Moreno, Santiago Martinez, Mario Maldonado, Bobby Sumpter, Budge Smith. GIRLS' BASKE'i'BALL BACK ROW: Vivian Nix, Ann Medley, Brenda Hazelwood, Kay Dismukes, Essie Barnhart, Betty Jane Landess, Louise Shoftner, Helen Brent, Johnnie Fay Bunyam, Wanda Landess. FRONT ROW: Mrs. Rossetta' Pingenot, Eleanor Hirzel, Shirley Childress, Patsy Bibb, Ann Slaughter, Tashya Braithwaite, Ernestine Kelley. GIRLS' 1950-'51 BASKETBALL SUMMARY Mrs. Rossetta Pingenot, making her debut in E. P. H. S., led a hard fighting but short sextet to a two won, four lost season. The girls had a great start as they rolled past their first two district foes, Pearsall and Cotulla. After this the Eaglets were unable to outscore their opponents, but they played hard until the end of the game. High scoring forwards, Essie Barnhart-Captain, and Bettie Jane Landess will long be remembered by the fans. The three guards, who, at times, were able to limit the opposition to a mere two points per quarter, were Billie Louise Shoftner, Tashya Braithwaite, and Helen Brent. Of the first six girls, only Helen Brent remains. It will certainly be hard to fill the spots vacated by the Seniors. 1' E? F Q 4, K ,v 4 75 . 5 li . 2 Q .1 Tliifxar 4,,.Q.ai-i ' . ' Wu... ., , 34.
