This group has worked hard in planning the new community district, and they will have a great deal more planning to carry out the new building program. board of education The school year, l958-1959, brought many changes in the local schools. The new Eagle Grove Community School District, which includes nine former districts - Eagle Grove Independent, Thor Independent, W'oolstock Independent, Norway Township, Newark Township tincluding Yincentj, Troy Township, Eagle Grove Township, part of VVoolstock Township, and part of Dayton Township - was approved by voters in January, 1958: the new district. under the new Board of Education, began operation on July 1, 1958. The Eagle Grove Community School District operates a junior College, Senior High School, Junior High School, and two Elementary Schools - Lela Howland and I.incoln - in Eagle Grove, and an Elementary School in each of the neighboring towns of Thor, Vincent, and XVoolstock. Enrollment for the entire system is approximately 1800. Further improvement of the Eagle Grove Community Schools was made possible by approval of a bond issue of 3850000 to be used in constructing a new Junior High School, a new Elementary School in Vincent, and a 5-room addition to the Lincoln building. It is hoped these new facilities will be available by September 1960. Edwin Barbour Robert S. The junior and senior classes also elect one additional member each year, designated as an alternate, who serves a l-year term. No current class officer may be a Student Council member. To promote all-school social activities, the Student Council sponsored a Freshman Welcoming' Dance early in the fall and a Christmas Seventeen Hop prior to Christmas vacation for all students of E.G.H.S. The above citation is given to each member of the National Honor Society. Member- ship in the National Honor Society is determined by scholarship, character, service, and leadership. To be eligible for nomination to this society, a student must be a junior or senior in residence in our school for one year, and must rank in the top one-third of his respective class. A total of 152 of the senior class may be members Q5'Z, elected in their junior yearj and 575 of the junior class may members. These percentages are se- lectd by an individual evaluation of the eligible students by the faculty. A total is made of the teachers' appraisalsg the total is divided by the number of teachers rating the stu- dent. The 5'Z, of the juniors and the 152, of the seniors are then selected from the top averages of the faculty ratings. The National Honor Society is an honorary rather than an active organization in our high school. Signs of all sizes bedeck the halls in school and line the gym during the events, booster buttons are sold to encourage school enthusiasm, and skits add encouragement during pep assemblies. Awards are presented to members who give extensive time and work to the club's program of activities. All of these are only a part of the Pep Katz's program of team support. Their membership is large, but the more, the better, when all work for the support of our teams. First the choruses tell the story of creation - the birth of light, firmament, earth and seas, birds, trees and man. There is the life in the garden of Adam fpantomimed by Victor Lothej and Eve Ueannette Thompsonj, then the tempta- tion. After the Fall there is life outside the garden - the birth of pain, death, and children, Cain CDoug Nieburj and Abel fGary Obrechtj. There is the moving first offering to God and the jealousy of Cain, who then turns on his brother. With Abel dead, Eve finds courage to go on, and also she finds compassion. The story flows between the principals and the choral groups, the latter being the voices of good and evil. The dramatic essence of many stories is caught here and presented with a poetic simplicity which is noteworthy in its phrasing and impact. The band's fall marching season started prior to the 1958-59 school year with their performing at the Humboldt Centennial fair in August, and ended with their participa- tion in Nixon Day at Fort Dodge early in November. 8:00 a.m. and evening rehearsals often kept the band personnel busy, but their efforts were well rewarded with a ban- quet honoring them during the winter. This does not close the band's season, however, for an invitation to Iowa State Col- lege's Veisha festivities CMay 95 was extended to the band and there is a possibility that it may march at Mason City's annual band festival in June. 0 ..L, Q , M-,,.,.,,.,.......,y ., ,, W N . x N vw fm my Q .2 U .1 K 1 Q if s s r s 4. 4 S X :uw 9 famwnmsm- Awww -H- f Left to right, front row: Alice Darland, Glenda Erickson, Carolyn Schroeder, Barbara Paulson, Janice Thurmond, Gary Tysdal, Mickelson, Rosalie Nicol, Julia Amosson. The Staff wishes to emphasize the fact that Without the financial support of these sponsors, our 1959 Eaglet would have been a figment of the imagination rather than an actual record of school life at Eagle Grove High School.
