' The 1930 MUSKETEER , J WARD SANFORD Pop J Ward Sanford known as Pop to Eagle Grove athletes and students IS deservmv of much cxedlt for the success of our athletlc teams Athletlc g6HlUS coupled wlth a like athletes We are looklng forward to havlng Pop Wlth us for the year to come Football Season The Pnates started thexr football season wlth a roar all guns worklng and closed ll Wlth a stlll louder bang Our Football season was unusually short but nevertheless we show an average of 500 whxch IS far better than many of the umversmes much larger than ours We had qulte a Job gettlng enough men out for a team as some of our last years letter men were behmd xn credits and could not spare the tlme to be out thls year 'lhls was a great handicap as we had only three men oxer the requlred Under the guld ance of Coach Sanford and our captam Tlllman Thompson we were knocked and bruised 1nto a remarkable condltlon consxderlng that seven men had never before been 1n suxts Our flrst game was wlth the Mason Crty Trojans Although outwelghed by about tour pounds ln the l1ne our Pxrates put up such a bloody battle that we trodded the Trojans down to a 7 0 defeat Our hopes looked dark however when we entered the Ft Dodge game Captaln Thompson was on the sldellnes from an mjury recelved ln the Mason City game and two other regulars were lald up w1th mgurles recelved durlng practlce As a re sult we were mowed down by the wlnners of the Conference and lost 39 6 Dlrectly after thlS game three more regulars were forced to qult because of studles Thxs proved such a hand1cap that at a meetmg of all football men rt was declded to cancel the schedule tor the rest of the season and thus get an early start on basketball Thus we have our 500 for games won and lost ag S'I'I 'ZCZZ1 222227112212 2222211513523 52512112 'Q JB able personality has done much to promote the proper morale and winning spirit in our

Due to our shortened football seasfn, we received an early start. Eddie Gross was elected captain of our crew. and more than filled the position with his pep and spirit of cooperation. The team had a gced foundation to work from, as six letter men were back from last year. At center was rangy Don Hoiekvam, Hook , and his uncanny basket eye plus the tip-off control, made him one oi the main cojgs. Tillman Thompson. Tommy , and Harold Dixon. Dick , proved to be a pair of whirlwinds at forward, and turned out to be a pair cf the highest scorers in the Conference. The guard positions were held by Capt. Ed Gross and Marvin Larson. t'Mike . and they have the distinction of having never ence lost the ball on a down-floor flurry. Allen, Stedman. and Hart proved to be C1 formid- able trio cf Substitutes, and certainly deserve credit ici' their part in the seasons victories. All the first string. graduate this year. and ne Lt years team is still in the shadows, but if they have the old E. G. J. C. spirit, they are sure to crme out on top. We hope they also receive as good a banquet at the close oi' their reason, as we did at the finish of ours.
