This year's basketball season even with it's ups and downs turned out to be suc- cessful season with a record of 15- ; win- ning the High Plains Leaque, the Sub- Dis- trict Championship, and obtaining a berth in the District Tournament at Birlington. The biggest highlight of this past sea- son was our defensive work. We held our opponents to 5 points a game during the regular season while our offense which sputtered much of the season averaged points a game. We had a balanced attack with four play- ers averaging in double figures; Ross Davis Paul Stavely, Tim Williams, and Lonnie Eder Even though Mark Weirich did not average in double figures he did a good job on the boards and defensively. This year's team played very well toget- her and we received good play from our bench of Milt Watts, Rob Frazee, Barry Koch who played very consistently as a Freshmen, Barry Holthus first year as a Junior, and Jack Barnes. With this years season wver the coaching staff has to look at the future and it looks promising even though we will lose Ross Davis our leading scorer, Mark Weirich and Rob Frazee to graduation this spring. However we do have coming back Tim Williams Paul Stavely, Lonnie Eder, Milt Watts, Barry Koch, Jack Barnes,Rick Garrison, Paul Stoker, and others who show promise with some hard work in the summer month. On behalf of the coaching staff we thank you all for your support this past season. Chet Devaughn

J.V. Basketball Summary Looking back at the 1977-78 J.V. basketball season, we didn't win as many games as we had hoped. But there was im- provement throughout the season. Turnovers caused us prob- lems this year, but by the end of the season we were cutting them down. Against Lamar the first time they beat usffairly easy. Their press caused alot of turnovers, but the second time we beat them in over time because we handled their press well and held our turnovers down. As I see the future their are only a few positions open for the varsity. There are several J.V. ballplayers of about equal ability to be selected from and as I see it, those sel- ected will probably be the ones who work the hardest in the off-season to improve on their weaknesses.
