The brightest spot was of course the convincing victory over Granada on homecoming, This performance shows just how good our team could have been if we would have been consistent and played as a team all season. The frustration of this season was evident in the games against Holly and Limon. The team succumbed in these games without much effort, lack of true desire to sacrifice for victory was easy to see. The 3-5 record for this season is at least disappointing. Although there were only 5 seniors out for football, experience was on the field with 17 re- turning lettermen. . The seniors will definitely be missed next season. Mark Weinch was outstanding and gave 100 percent every time. Scott Bowen and Leonard Smart developed into fine players. Monte Richardson and Bill Dawson made good defensive contributions. One fact that should make the team contemplate what could have been; two teams from are league made the state playoffs. One beat us 7-6, the other we outplayed 36-1 +. What if we had been willing to sacrifice to win? ______________________Coach C-illetti------- --------------- © Juniors Jr, High Freshmen Seniors HOWeCOWMHG 1999 poomi. ,. CH99RL99C )5_ JR. HI CHEERLEADER Gina Jones Tina Hulteen Cheryl Knoblock Sheila Baxter Kassie Diel n??-?a -1 • JR.HIGH EAGLETS JUNIOR HIGH FOOTEALL I 1977 Eads Junior High football team this year was undoubtedly the small est in size but the biggest in desire we have seen in several years. The smallest being 72 lb. Derek (Fly) Gulley to 110 lb. Mike (Moose) Weeks. Eads went from a Wing-T formation,to a double wing, and to a pro-set every series of downs, with the precision of a college team. Actually the Eads Junior High team this year was one of the most diver- sified scoring teams of our area. Scoring came from the quarterback options of Steve Shotton to fullback Mike Weeks and to running back Roger Calkins, then to the flanker passes to Terry Brown and Scott Pearcey. The final scoring attacks came from aerial catches of Derek (Fly) Gulley to the quickness of Tony Vitacco, our ends. The defensive team of Eads ran from a 6 slant to a k-5 regualr to a 5-2 standard. The defense was led by Mark Kelley, Kevin Hebberd, Mike Weeks, Steve Shotton, Roger Calkins and Derek Gulley. Only one injury came this year to veteran Ken Kelley, our top flanker, with a broken arm early in the season. by Coach Lay Back Row L to R: Jeff Kelley, Mark Kelley, Randy Smart, Mike Weeks Steve Shotton, Kevin Hebberd, David Marble, Bret Hester, Front Row: Mike Dixon, Terry Brown, Derek Gulley, Brad Owens, Greg Griswould , Roger Calkins. Although their season record was 4-6, records don't always prove to be too valid an indicator of a team's abilities. Eads took all but one team to three games in each match. When you lose a match in three games, you can never be too upset-it could have easily gone the other way. There were three very bright spots to the season that shouldn't be forgotten. First of all, we defeated Kit Carson, the leaque champion, during regular season play. Secondly, we managed to place 4th in the Sub-District Tournament, losing the Istand 2nd place teams of that tournament. Third, and more importantly, we will lose only two girls to graduation this spring and will be able to start off next year with sound fundamentals and a team with experience, poise, and con- fidence, the lack of which cost us so many games this season. I am confident that this year was the building year and that next year is the year that Eads will prove to be the power in power volleyball. Coach Blakey dihhh, got it! (John Calkins) And I got my hair fixed today!! Our own Howard Cosell Lonnie Eder Coach Crawford Barry Koch, Milton Watts, and Rob Frazee. Tim Williams getting the tip. Ross and Tim hustling back. Ross Davis scores again! Number 20 is Ross Davis. GO! EADS! GO! Paul with the ball. Stavely bringing the ball up. Milton getting ready to jump ball. This year's basketball season even with it's ups and downs turned out to be suc- cessful season with a record of 15- ; win- ning the High Plains Leaque, the Sub- Dis- trict Championship, and obtaining a berth in the District Tournament at Birlington. The biggest highlight of this past sea- son was our defensive work. We held our opponents to 5 points a game during the regular season while our offense which sputtered much of the season averaged points a game. We had a balanced attack with four play- ers averaging in double figures; Ross Davis Paul Stavely, Tim Williams, and Lonnie Eder Even though Mark Weirich did not average in double figures he did a good job on the boards and defensively. This year's team played very well toget- her and we received good play from our bench of Milt Watts, Rob Frazee, Barry Koch who played very consistently as a Freshmen, Barry Holthus first year as a Junior, and Jack Barnes. With this years season wver the coaching staff has to look at the future and it looks promising even though we will lose Ross Davis our leading scorer, Mark Weirich and Rob Frazee to graduation this spring. However we do have coming back Tim Williams Paul Stavely, Lonnie Eder, Milt Watts, Barry Koch, Jack Barnes,Rick Garrison, Paul Stoker, and others who show promise with some hard work in the summer month. J.V. Basketball Summary Looking back at the 1977-78 J.V. basketball season, we didn't win as many games as we had hoped. But there was im- provement throughout the season. Turnovers caused us prob- lems this year, but by the end of the season we were cutting them down. Against Lamar the first time they beat usffairly easy. Their press caused alot of turnovers, but the second time we beat them in over time because we handled their press well and held our turnovers down. As I see the future their are only a few positions open for the varsity. There are several J.V. ballplayers of about equal ability to be selected from and as I see it, those sel- ected will probably be the ones who work the hardest in the off-season to improve on their weaknesses. Our record of 10 wins and 1 loss for leaque play and an overall record of 13 and 3 came only from hard work and the desire to be a winner. In Jr. High sports we try to develope the concept of being a win- ner but only through good sportsmanship can this be done. Learning to be an athlete has direct correlation with academics and this Jr. High program instills in the boys mind both. I would like to say also that much of our sucess developes out of the attitude of leadership which many of our eight graders possess. Finally, every great high school program depends upon our program on the Jr. High level. I can see several potential assets to the high school team emerging from the Jr. High. Senior Coaches Comments: The 1977-78 Wrestling season was successful on many notes. The team won two tournaments and placed second at three others including District. The second place finish at District was the highlight of the season. Eads placed ahead of Springfield which was ranked third in the State, coming into the tournament and was second to one ranked Holly. Nine Eagle wrestlers qualified for State out of our eleven man District team. Dick Sniff won District as a freshman. Smart was third at State, Monson fourth, and Doug Uhland sixth. The wrestlers broke nearly every individual school record. Most State qualifiers, most points at District, most points at State, highest team finish at State most take downs, most reversals, most escapes, and tied most pins. All but Smart and Thomas return for the 1978-79 season from the State qualifiers. A good year, but lots of room for improvement. I have enjoyed work- ing with these young men and I'm proud if their achievements. Best of Luck next year. I feel one of the major goals during a season should be to improve ones time or distance in events as the season progresses and to challenge existing school records, we achieved several of these goals in setting new school records in the open K), 880 medley relay, and the mile relay. Congradulations girls, on a fine season. Coach Crawford Patty G. Angie P. 1978 Baseball Due to wind, rain, and other circumstances. The 1978 baseball season was cut short. We played 11 games compared to the 18 we had scheduled. Although we only won three games and lost eight, I felt we played some good baseball. In the 11 games we had 76 base hits compared to 57 by the opposing teams. Key errors and walks were the decisive factors in our losing record. As the team consisted of only jjuniors, sophomores, and freshmen, the future should be bright. With defensive ly, I look for a league contender next year. Coach Crawford R. Monson LETS GO MEN ?
