Something glowing and warm Like the coals of living fire, Something as cool and sweet As lilies at dawn, Something as restful and clean As smooth white sheets at night When one is very tired, Something with the taste of spring water From high places, Or like the tang of cool purple grapes To the mouth. But Friends, Since we cannot buy such gifts for you, Come go with us Out into the little everyday fields of living, And let us gather in our baskets, like manna, God's gift to us: The down-pouring, exquisite beauty Of life itself. It was a learning experience for the team and myself. Coach Lay and I feel that the team developed into a good solid team. The defense trimmed 156 points off of the points allowed in 1975Ā« (132 vs 288) Although the offense didn't do quite as well, there was improve- ment 6k points vs 52 in one less game. This promises a bright future for EHS Football as l8 lettermen are returning including 3 starting backs. Eight seniors will be missed, Gary Knoblock, Kip Peck, Ronnie Phillips, Steve Parker, Marty Barnett, Donnie Kelley, Denny Weirich, and Frank Crow. Gary, Kip and Ronnie were instrumental in our de- fense and Marty was our leading rusher on offense. With the likes of starter Mark Weirich, Paul Stavely, Milton Watts, Lonnie Eder, Richard Monson, Scott Bowen, John Calkins, Monte Richardson, and 10 others who lettered and will find positions next year, it's hard to feel anything but optomistic about EHS Football next fall. The annual E.H.S. girls Powder Puff football game was held Friday night, November 5th. It started out with the announcing of the coaches, captains, and cheerleaders. After the pre-game show the captains and referees met to flip the coin. The Foxy Flankers won the toss and chose to receive. The game got under way with the kick off from Monica Richardson of the Broad Squad to Konda McKnight of the Foxy Flankers. The kick return by Konda was good for 22 yards. The first offensive drive of the Foxy Flankers failed as the Broad Squad defense held their ground. The only offensive threat came in the late part of the second quarter when Shoni McKnight took the ball all the way to the Foxy Flankers 5 yard line. The Broad Squad had a little bit of bad luck with a few costly penalties and failed to take the ball in for the score. Thus ending the first half with a 0-0 tie. The half time activities began with the announcing of the mothers of the players. Then the king candidates and their escorts were announced, Marty Barnett and Cindy Bright, Donnie Kelley and Pam Davis, and Kip Peck and Penny Weirich, with Kip being crowned Powder Puff King of 1976. The second half started out with the kick off from Karen Ebright to Lorrie Lynn Watts which was good for 25 yards. The first score of the game came in the third quarter when Konda McKnight of the Foxy Flankers picked up a Broad Squad fumble and took it 29 yards for the touchdown. Suzette Barnett went in for the 2 point conversion, making the score 8-0. The Broad Squad failed to move the ball and punted it to the Foxy Flankers. A few plays later Suzette Barnett took the ball 56 yards for the score and also got in for the extra points which made the score 16-0 in favor of the Foxy Flankers. The only other score came in the fourth quarter on a 10 yard pass play from Monica Richardson to Teena Monson, of the Broad Squad. The extra points failed and the score was 16-6. With 52 seconds left to go, the referees called the game because it was getting too rough, thus ending the game with a 16-6 Foxy Flankers win. n FOOTBALL I CMEEBLEdDER5 P ā” Tina Fredrick Kathy Garrison Kendra Nelson Mary Hulteen 5 1 R L 5 Standing: Kim Branom, Penny Weirich, Pam Davis, UP: Suzette Barnette, DOWN: Rhonda Davis. HIGH FOOTBALL This year our Jr. High team had somewhat of an average season. Build- ing our offense from an eleven man wish-bone to an eight-man rat race we managed to hold our own. Really it wasn't too bad. The boys really learned alot about the game of football. Of course, we seem to have to gear ourselves to the officiating of the day. One main comment I have is I wish everyone could realize that Jr. High sports is a learning situation and officiating is a very important fact- or. Just remember one thing, fellas ā Win or Lose isn't as important as how you, yourselves, participate. Thanks for a great attitude. We had sev- eral hurdles to overcome before we could concentrate on the finesse of the game. Thirty-six girls reported the first day of practice with sand lot experience. In addition, to sand lot experience, prac- tice in serving, spiking, passing, and bumping the ball with limited equipment (balls) prohibits perfection. Our season began in the exact proced- ure outline for a winning season; a home match and a win. Reality took over for the remainder of the season; we could serve the ball well, but couldn't return to keep the volley going. As the season came to a close, we were closing the gap in points with each match, closing the season with a 1-5 record. The season was climaxed with +th place in the league tournament at Hugo. Experience and practice provide a winning combination, and the girls gained in both this past season. We can look for- ward to next year with enthusiasm. i S COOKS Jane Rittgers, Alice Glover, Dorothy Collins, Mary Peck, Daisy Hebbard, Dolores Rector BUS DRIVERS JANITORS k Larry Gifford, Beverly Rehm, Bob Laird, Dolores Laird, James Flick, Edgar Jacobs, Not pictured, Jim Pearl, Larry Rehm, Pete Schleining Vic Earlow HOflECD DifllB DĀ£HICE The 1976 Homecoming Dance was held Saturday after the win of the game Friday night. The defensive phase of the game was the most decisive factor in our ability to achieve winning performances. Whether man-to-man or zone we were able to hold āāmost ' of our opponents below 65 points per game while the offense averaged 72 points. We had several games during the year that we had to struggle to come out on top and some we didn't! We feel the major reason for this was the inability to be men- tally ready on the offense end. Many times we struggled to get our patterns organized and forced shots which enabled our opponents to stay in the running. Every year teams lose players due to graduation and this year is no exception. The seniors this year put forth effort and had determination to win: Donnie Kelley maintained a 20-point average, was the team's leading rebounder with 11 per game, led the team with a 52% FGP, and will be missed in the 1977-78 season; Mark Forsyth came off the bench early in the season and became the starting center at 6'1 . He was very determined and held his own on the boards throughout the year; Donald Oswald was always a great competitor and came off the bench in many situations to contribute to the winning effort; This was Marty Barnett's first year of basketball competition he came a long way. He was a great asset to have coming off the bench at the guard position. We truly wish the best in the future for the graduating seniors. With this year's season at an end we have to start to look to the future. Next year we have a strong nucleus to work around: Ross Davis with hi6 always consistent play at the guard and wing positions, averaging 15 points per game this season; Mark Weirich who is an excellent passer and one of the strongest rebounders around at 5'10 ; Paul Stavely who was this year's leading assist man with 9 and averaging 14 points per game with his outside shooting; Other people with experience are Lonnie Eder, a good rebounder and wing shooter; Robbie Frazee who likes defense; Tim Williams who has the potential to become a excellent rebounding and scoring center; Jack Barnes and Milt Watts whose hustle .akes up for their weaknesses; Steve Trujillo who has potential at the guard position; and strong personnel coming up from the Junior High, which leaves us with the goal to work hard for the upcoming season to regain basketball dominance. We were inexperienced at the guard positions which slowed our of- fense. The guards did show improvement through the season which will help in the future. Our centers and forwards carried us through most of the season. Lonnie Eder was a consistent scorer for us and Milton Watts, Tim Williams, Monte Richardson, and Jack Barnes worked the boards. Our main problems were turnovers. We made far too many bad passes to consistently win. The team didn't have an abundance of excellent shooters so wc needed a shot every time we had the ball and we didn't get it. In rebounding we failed to box out consistently. Boxing out has to be made a habit and must be done each time the ball is put upānot once in a while. I was satisfied with the defense throughout the season. We held the other team down on offense, but we just didnāt score enough. The coaching staff feels that the man-to-man defense is the best, and we played this type through most of the season. There were several sophmores on this J.V. team this season who will help the varsity next season. I feel there is a lot of potential. Other sophmores and freshmen gained valuable experience which will help the J.V. team in the next season. The two areas that will be stressed next year will be position on the rebounds and a better passing game. In the past we have been a fast break team and in order to fast break, you need the rebounds and must make accurate passes. The team was young: one senior, three juniors and the remaining sophomores and freshmen. The girls lacked basketball knowledge which comes from early introduction to basketball, grade school, junior high school and into high school. This being the first year of a girls competitive Junior High basketball program will be a great asset for the incoming freshmen. Our shooting percentage increased throughout the season, to . from the field. Our free throw percentage increased from 26% to 1%. Turn- overs were a big reason for our losses, averaging 20 per game. all handling, passing, dribbling, shooting, driving, use of left and right hands, concen- tration, determination and will to win comes through constant practice on the part of the individual. Team work comes during formal practice. We used a person-to-person defense, 2-1-2 zone, 1-3-1 zone and a 3 person press this past season, ending up with a 10-7 season record, and a 2-1 tournament record. More practice time will be needed. A 50-niinute class scheduled during the day is not adequate to develop a good program. I feel the girls improved greatly during the season; and being a young team, the future looks very good for EHS. I have welcomed the opportunity to coach again for Eads High. By giving our daughters a basketball instead of a doll, and working with them from the age of 2 the girls will become better shooters and their program will be par- allel with the boys. I hope the girls have learned and enjoyed this past season, and are looking forward to the coming years ahead. The girls put forth a great deal of effort and were reward- ed justly in their final scores. I feel that the gills improved immensely from the first of the sea- son play and learned alot in the process. Their season record for varsity stands at fifteen (15 ) wins and two (2) losses, which primarily speaks for itself. T sincerely appreciated their team work and spirit. Kneeling: Rosalie Trujilo, Delene Eikenberg, Delisa Eikenberg, en ThisJseason our team was young with only one eigth grader. Our six players that played the full season put out a tremendous effort even though they faced teams that were taller and had greater bench strength. Our record of and 2 in regular season play and 3 and 3 for tournaments, does not really tell about the effort these girls put out. For bench strength during tournament play we had to turn to our two fourth graders. Delene Eikenberg did an excellent job playing forward and wing for us this year. She will be really missed next year. Much of our strength came from under the boards and the play of Delisa Eikenberg. I am expecting great things from her next year. Glenda Lessenden improved a great deal this season playing forward and center, she will really help us next season. Our guards Rosalie Trujillo, Melynda Mitchell, qnd Lisa Bright will realy help us as they improve. This season they played well against opponents that outsized them so with experience they will get better. During tournament play Carrie Mitchell and Loretta Bright did an excellent job for us. In the Lamar tournament they even played against ninth graders and did well. Next year they should really add to our overall team strength. Overall next year will prove to be a good one. The Eagles will lose Knoblock, Phillips, Peck, Uhland and Garner by graduation this year, but will have most of its team returning , includ- ing five of the seven who qualified for the state meet. Among those re- turning will be Sophomores Branom, Monson, Dixon, and Freshman Steve Uhland and Junior Leonard Smart. Coach Laughridge In many ways this was a successful season for our wrestlers. We won trophies at three tournaments, picked up many individual medals and had two wrestlers (Gary Knoblock Ronnie Phillips) finish fourth at state. Although the team didn't place as high as I felt they were capable of, the five state qualifiers that will return will certainly help next year's team. Leonard Smart, Jack Dixon, Richard Monson, Kirk Branom, and Steve Uhland will provide state tourney experience towards a fine 1977-78 season. I have enjoyed working with these young men and have learned alot this season. I really believe they can lead Eads to a trophy at state next season. Coach Gilletti Jeff attempting a escape. The 1977 girls' track season, as in any sport, had its highs and lows. There were several school records broken during the season which shows im- provement and dedication. Records are set to be broken and I feel that each individual in their particular event should use that as a personal goal. As a team we won our own invitational meet which was actually the highlight of the season. The team consisted of all underclassmen which makes the fu- ture look bright. Those who were out for the first time this season gained valuable experience which will help them achieve success in future years. I would like to extend my appreciation to those who worked at our invitational to make it a suc- cess, and to Mr. Woelk who took charge of practice while I was at baseball games. The 1977 baseball season ended with a winning record of 10 wins and 8 loses. We set our goal on the state championship and although we failed attain that we still had a successful season. There were eight seniors on the team this year, all started who deserve credit for their respective roles. These men will have to be replaced next year and I feel that they have set standards for the underclassmen to strive to beat. These seniors have helped to main- tain a winning baseball tradition for Eads High School which should be a goal for others to follow. I wish to thank all those who supported our team and baseball program, and especially Mr.DeVaughn for keeping the scorebook and Mr. Hamby for assisting me as coach.
