FOOTBALL When you have a winning season in football here at Eads, you have to consider it as an outstanding season. This year we compiled a 5-4 record, the first winning sea- son in 10 years. We had a good bunch of seniors this year and it will take quite an effort on the part of next years' team to equal the 1971 re- cord . Doug Shotton, Marty Miller, Eddie Popejoy and Gordon Voss were selected on the All-Conference team. Keith Barlow, Russ Carpenter and Kenny Lindholm were Honorable Mention All-Conference. I was very happy and proud to be part of the 71 football team. ----Coach Scales Scores 12 Chey. wells 16 19 Stratton 18 7 Lamar 'B' 6 15 Las Animas 1 ' B 0 0 Walsh 46 36 Swink 18 0 Springfield 14 36 Granada 6 0 Holly 19 BASKETBALL In looking back at this years basketball season, I am pleased with the results. I think a lot of people tend to feel that we folded at the end of the season. I don't feel this is true, ye were hurt by a severe injury to Tery Larrew which was very dama- ging to us. ye were also hurt by a lack of depth all season. These two things prevented us from go- ing to state. Our seniors, Marty Miller, Gary Newman, and Gordon Voss did outstand- ing jobs in their roles as starters. Doug Shotton was a great asset in a reserve role many times this past season. In looking to the future I see nothing but good things for the Eads Eagles. First we return our two top scorers: Tery Larrew and Maynard Davis, both who were All-Con- ference selections. Secondly, we had the best Junior Varsity in the league which showed great promise in many areas. Look for three starters and the depth of next years team to come from Calvin Covalt, Art Cunningham, Ron Brown, Steve Frazee, Mike Miller, Monte Price, Scott Forsyth, Bruce Stavely and Gary Stoker. All in all, I was very pleased with our 15-7 record. ----Coach Gausman It was a team effort that made us No. 1 in the Junior Varsity circuit. It was fun winning the League championship and I feel that the kids playing gain valuable know- ledge that will help them when they play on the varsity next year. I will miss coaching the JVs next year, but feel they will be right at the top next year also. We defeated Plainview twice and gain revenge by clobbering Cheyenne wells the second time around. Many times we bounced back from a first half deficit to win in the final minutes of play. The JVs were truly No. 1 to me. --- Coach Scales Back (left to right): Coach Robert Scales, Ronnie Tery Larrew, Marty Miller, Gary Newman, Coach Joh (left to right): Steve Frazee, Kelly Lujan, Doug Davis, Bruce Stavely. f i Back, left to rigl Miller, Delcarl E: Front, left to ri; Bruce Stavely, Moi it: Art Cunningham, Ronnie Brown, Calvin Covalt, Mike Lkenberg, Gary Stoker, Coach Robert Scales ght: David yissel, Mitch Beeson, Steve Frazee, Nate Rose, atie Price, Scott Forsythe — EHS 1970-71 wrestlers are, from left to right top row: Mark Honaker, Jeff Immer, Dennis Lulf, Rex weirich, Tom Richards, Ed Popejoy, Ken Lindholm, Keith Barlow, Charles Stavely, Vic Barlow, R.O. woods, Terry Senier, second ro : George Lulf, Rodney Bro n, Ken ji.sev, Mike Resen- dez, Brent Batterton, Denny Igou, Daryll Adamson, Kim Peck, Chip Hoeye Eads 10 Las Animas 42 38 McClave 18 33 Kit Carson 18 30 Crowley Co. 25 5 Holly 43 13 Stratton 33 26 Limon 26 18 Cheyenne wells 27 33 Hugo 18 40 McClave 20 24 Walsh 32 8 Holly 35 46 Kit Carson 8 33 Hugo 19 Mr. wood's comment on the 1970-71 wrestling season was as follows: we had a better than average season.this year, although the com- petition was much stiffer. Carpenter set a League re- cord with a 134-6 1 2 throw in the discus event. Gary Newman, Mitch Beeson and Larrew all brought home second place finishes for Eads. Maynard Davis got 3rd places in the 100, and 220. Marty Miller and Mike Bee- son also got 3rds to aid the Eagle cause. To State In Baseball The Eads High Eagles knocked off Plainview 4-2 Wednesday to nail down the High Plains League baseball championship and ad- vance to the quarter-finals of Class A competition. Eads will play the winner of the East-Cen- tral League on May 7, with the site to be determined. Kenny Lindholm’s 3-run homer in the first inning paved the way for Eads’ 4-2 win at Plainview. The slugging second baseman is the leading hitter for the Eagles and he knocked in Maynard Davis and Doug Shotton for the game- winning runs. Marty Miller then checked the Hawks on four nits, striking out 7 and walking 2. Both Plainview runs were unearned. BASEBALL The Eagles won the first Class A Baseball champion- ship in the history of the school and went on to de- feat Arriba in the quarter-finals before bowing out in in the senis to Manzanola, 3-1. Four seniors sparked the team to the title: Marty Miller, Ken Lindholm, Gary Newman and Doug Shotton. Miller beat Plainview twice and had a sparkling 1.06 ERA in pitching. He al- so led the club in hitting with a .425 average. Lind- holm was second in hitiing with a .414 average.
