NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION MANNED SPACECRAFT CERTER Houston 1. Texas To the Members of the Senior Class of Eads High School: As you move to the close of one of the most formative periods of your lives, I know that you have reached a plateau of understanding that will enable you to move toward discovery of your purpose in life and to set about the task of its fulfillment. That this process will always be a rewarding experience is a prayer, in which I know I am joined, by the parents and teachers who have inspired you and instilled the concepts which have helped to form the important attributes of character you have acquired during these school years. In this important process of becoming the person you are today, it is, I think, important to note that the attri- butes of character you possess today will determine the character of the man or woman you will be tomorrow. The knowledge acquired here has served to create a thirst for new knowledge, and as we gain in knowledge, our individual awareness increases, our intellectual horizons widen -- we grow. Though you may have reached your ultimate physical stature, you can continue to grow in a very real sense, because the process of growing is a never-ending thing -- we continue to grow in stature, to become wiser and better persons. To put it simply, your opportunities are golden, and you can be what you wish to be. The American heritage is one of men whose intellectual curi- osity remained keen throughout life, who continued on the road to learning as long as they lived. They have handed us a heritage dedicated to courage and honor and freedom, which is seemingly blessed with an inherent goodness of purpose. All of us share in the heritage and all of us contribute toward its maintenance. Whether we set our goals toward the stars, and actually hope to reach them, as we here at NASA know we will someday do, or whether this is a mere figure of speech, there is room at the stars for each and every citizen of this great country of ours, as we move toward life's fulfillment. M. Scott Carpenter LCDR, USN NASA Astronaut
