I . , . k k H, P. Y ' '97 ' E. M. HOLT COMMUNITY May 12, 1951 Dear Reader, When we realize that our last year at E. M. Holt is nearly over, we keep getting rushes of nostalgia about our alma mater, teachers, classmates, sports, socials, and the many activities of our four happy years at E. M. Holt. Once they seemed an eternity, now only a few short years. Before this last year is finished, we wish to write for you and for ourselves a letter which will preserve lasting memories of our school days through pictures and print. We can hope to reproduce only a minor portion of the happiness we have experienced, the enlightenment we have acquired, the standards of character we have developed, and the friendships we have madeg be- cause these are things that neither words nor pictures can express truly. Nor can we portray our carefree days at E. M. Holt, our love for our parents. our appreciation to our principal and teachers, our dread of classes due to unlearned lessons, the crookedness of the lunch line. excuses to go to town to sell ads, spend- ing an hour in a ditch on a cold day in an unheated bus. and the many well remembered acts of kindness and love. However, we shall strive in writing this letter to present a true picture of our school days. Not only our school days but also our lives and the lives of our parents are influenced by the past: our heritage is historically one of the richest in the United States, for 3 miles from our school on May 16, 1771, was fought the tirst battle for American independence between the Colonial Troops commanded by Gover- nor Tryon and a group of Alamance farmers who called themselves Regulators For this reason our year- book is named REG-O-ALA, derived from Regulators of Alamance : it is our hope that we and our descend- ants shall always cherish the memory of those bold Regulators and resolve by our honorable progress and ambition in life to carry on their fight for freedom and democracy. Our school, Edwin M. Holt, first opened its doors in 1927 on thirty acres of the original Holt land given by James N. Williamson, Jr., and William H. Williamson. grandsons of the owner of the first cotton mill in Alamance County, Edwin M. Holt, in whose honor the school was named. On that grand opening about 400 students, in grades one through eleven. under the supervision of eleven teachers entered school for an eight month term. Today we have nearly one thousand students, 31 teachers, twelve grades, and nine months of school. Our building has expanded from one of 16 rooms to a modern high school with 37 rooms. Today these are Quite crowdedg next year we hope that our dreams for a new high school will materialize. Several years ago we learned that a letter had definite parts: heading, address. salutation, body, com- plimentary close and signature. In this, our letter to you, we have a heading, the freshmen heading toward success: an address, the sophomores addressing the future with efficiency: a salutation, the juniors saluting and accepting their responsibilities, a complimentary close, the seniors closing these four years with credit- able serviceg a signature, the merchants and professional men of Alamance County who by their educational interest and financial generosity made this volume possible. The body of our letter consists of classes, re- ligious and social activities, and athletics. Dear Reader, it is our hope that you will never forget our eventful days at E. M. Holt, for they have been wonderful-among the best and happiest that we shall ever experience. In our letter we shall endeavor to present our thoughts and actions recorded in words and pictures, in such a way that this letter will be- 3,13 come one of your most cherished possessions. h ,Q -'fl X5 Sincerely, Ti-is REG-O-ALA STAFF A' .
