GLORIA JEAN WILLIAMS Mascot CLASS IIISTURY After eight long years of study, we reached the first part of our four year journey through high school. There were 54 of us green freshmen, and we had as our guides Miss Rena Isley and Miss Christine Staton. Our class officers were Jack Staley, President, Nancy Keck, Vice President, Libby Euliss. Secretary, and Betty Thompson, Treasurer. We chose our motto, Hower, and colors which we have kept through high school. Nancy Keck was our representative to the Sophomore-Senior Banquet. We lost six students during the year and only gained one. Sophomores!!! A grand total of 46!! We were guided by Mrs. Ira Lee. Officers of the year were Lucy Euliss, President, Ben McPherson, Vice President, Betty Thompson, Secretary and Treasurer, and Carlysle Brandon, Song Leader. We lost Peggy Sharpe to be an army wife and Anderson Sharpe to become one of Uncle Sam's children-as a marine. Juniors at last!!! There were 38 of us and we were guided for the second year by Mrs. Ira Lee. We elected as officers: Nancy Keck, President, Robert Carter, Vice President, Clemitene Justice, Secretary, Jack Staley, Treasurer, and Esther Rene Ingle, Historian. Mary Lee Shaw and Ben McPherson did a good job as reporters during the year. Our first party was held at Mickey Shockley's, and we'll never forget the scavenger hunt. To Hnance our banquet, We decided to sell magazines. Our commission amounted to S143 which was more than enough to have a wonderful banquet in April. We selected Nancy Keck, Robert Carter, Jack Staley, and Patsy Carter to represent us in Student Council, Nancy was named Vice President. Our gradeparents were Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Ingle, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Staley, and Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Keck. At Christmas time we had a party at Esther Rene's, and we'll never know how all 32 of us got into her living room. We guess it was because there was always room for one more. Hot chocolate and doughnuts surely did taste good. We thought Santa Claus had gone out of style for us but that tree was loaded with presents-crazy though they were. See all of you at Carlysle's at 7:00. This took place in March and we can still taste those banana splits, ham sandwiches, cokes, and chewing gum. Here comes the May Queen-Lucy Euliss-and here come the attendants: Carlysle, Brandon, Conrad Johnson, Hilda Love and Norene Coble .... t'Whom are you taking to the banquet? That was the popular question for the month of April. The banquet was held in the school cafeteria and was decorated as a May Day scene with rainbow colors everywhere .... At the graduation exercises, Mary Lee Shaw was Chief Marshal with Conrad Johnson, Carlysle Brandon, Donna Caviness, and Nell Dare Fox as marshals. Our farewell party was held at Esther Rene's. We said so long to Junior life and looked to the next year when we would be Seniors. Seniors!!!!! There are 36 of us, Neal Smith and Robert Frye of Burlington High School joined us, also Paul Aiken, a veteran of World War II. As our class oflicers we elected Robert Carter, President, Carlysle Brandon, Vice President, Norene Coble, Treasurer, Nell Dare Fox, Secretary, and Carlysle Brandon, Song Leader. Our sponsor is Mrs. W. Albert Graham. Our grade parents are Mr. and Mrs. Brandon and Mr. and Mrs. Keck. Nancy Keck is President of the Student Council, as helpers she has Conrad Johnson, Isaac Albright, Mary Lee Shaw and Nell Dare Fox. As our mascots we elected Gloria Jean Williams and Jimmie Linnens. Rings!!! At last our rings arrived, and we are quite proud of them. The REG-O-ALA Staff is burning the midnight oil to give us the best annual pos- sible, We are looking forward to spring which brings the banquet and to gradua- tion-the goal for which we have been working these twelve years. After graduation as we go our sept rate ways, we shall cherish always the memory of these days-our happy high school days at E. M. Holt. ' ESTHER RENE INGLE, Historian. 14 CLASS POEM We heard no school bells ring today, Our school days now are through. We now must go our separate way, With life to keep our rendezvous. Our voices no longer fill the halls, Old' haunts no longer hold familiar faces. New seniors rise within the walls: This year's juniors will take our places. We have started here our education: Our Alma Mater now we leave behind. We are the foundation of tomorrow's nation What the future holds, soon we will Hnd. We're ready now, the storms of life to face: We may stumble, but we'll never fall: With our courage, and by God's grace, We, the seniors of '48, will win over all. ' MARY LEE SHAW.
