Caught in o world of modern technology, we often overlook the events that made an early settler glad to have found a new land. The land we call America. Stunted by the complexities of modern life, we must take the time to reflect on the events of the past. Progress steams forward creating new experiences that often recall times within the last 200 years that we can never forget. 9 1. Bob Moulton enjoying Recreational Sewing class. 2. Donna Martinson preparing to sew on her jacket. 3. Students take advantage of Distributive Education store in commons. 10 Time can only tell how long a school will remain in its true tradition. Changes in the curriculum brought approval from most students, but a few were against more modern thinking. The student smoking lounge was the most controversial change. The lounge allowed students to smoke during the five minutes passing time between classes. Opposition was voiced against the lounge by students and faculty members who complained of smoke in the halls. Phy. Ed. classes discovered much change. By law, all classes that were offered were to be co-educational. This law brought new classes such as Outdoor Education, Contact Team Sports, and Individual Sports to Cooper. Under the same law, all Home Economics and Industrial Arts classes are also co-educational. This meant that the all-male ‘‘Chef class was disbanded and co-educational classes offered. Another new class. Recreational Sewing, was added, bringing enthusiasm from many students. Distributive Education opened a store in the commons again this year, offering ‘‘munchies for the students to eat. n The United States of America has survived for 200 years. We've come a long way, but there are still many problems to be solved. Inflation and unemployment still plague the economy. The energy crisis still hovers near. The lack of oil has necessitated the construction of the Alaskan pipeline. In November, 1976, the nation will elect the 39th President of the United States. Two hundred years ago, the first President, George Washington, had many problems as he began a nation. President number 39 will have obstacles to overcome in order to continue the life of America. Gerald Ford is a strong candidate in 1976, but Nelson Rockefeller will not be running as his Vice-President. George Wallace and Ronald Reagan also are intending to be candidates. A most important issue facing the nation is that of euthanasia. It may be decided through the case of Karen Quinlan. Ms Quinlan had been in a coma for six months when her parents asked the court for permission to let her die by turning off the respirator which was keeping her alive. The outcome of this case decided whether we have the right to let someone die when recovery seems impossible. 1776 was the year for a revolution, 1976 is the year for revolutionary ideas. The future is vague and undefined, for there is no certain way to predict it. However, man must realize that his actions today will determine his life tomorrow. Careless wasting of natural resources could bring a day when there is no way to produce energy because of a lack of resources. Man in his disregard for the environment could pollute the earth to such an extent that life, as we know it, could not exist. Finally, if the nations of the world continue to distrust each other, problems of famine and overpopulation can’t be solved. To solve such immense problems, there must be cooperation between countries. The future does have a good chance of being bright for the world, but we must look ahead . . . before tomorrow is here. 14 Henry Kissinger works for world cooperation. Will there be a day when gas pumps are empty, never to be filled? The carelessness of man. 15 Tine 'for School, No Tine io Sleep 17 18 — Admini tra ion Administration — 19 1. Mr. Hammond; Speech 2. Each student must also go to the program related class. There are conventions that many students take part in — selling, speaking, performing skills, etc. Around Valentine’s Day, the students of Distributive Education went over to Highview and talked and partied with them. The students help others as they prepare themselves for the future. kV ; 22 — Work Program Work Program — 23 24 — Work Program Work Progrom — 25 1. Ms. Stonoch, French 2. Ms. Buehtow, German 3. Cultural Experiences In the foreign language department this year, there were two new teachers: Ms. Stanoch and Ms. Buehtow, teaching French and German respectively. Both added a new style to the excellent old one. A big part of French this year was the study of the culture of France. In French I, the everyday things which the French use were taught. French II and III developed these more, and finally IV and V utilized these basics when applying them to art and literature. How, after all, can one appreciate a language if they don't understand the people who speak it? Students in German were encouraged to form quick responses. During this Bicentennial, they recognizied Germans who contributed to America. Spanish is more than just a language foreign from our own. Spanish is a heritage — a way of life — for over 30 million people of the World. By experiencing elements such as cuisine, dance, music, and literature the student was able to better understand those many people. In general the language department looked very nice this year. Along with an all new lab, the walls were painted and the lab made to look interesting with posters, maps, and all kinds of cultural things. Jnique Education Inner School is for the student who Lacks the desire to pply himself to a regular curriculum. A school within a chool, Inner School has brought new light to education or students involved. Students having the desire to jarticipate in Inner School must go through a ecommendation process involving their counselor, arents, teachers, principal, and a panel of Inner ichool students — the final decision being made by the nner School staff. The student is required to apply limself to a minimum of six courses. After the half day f Inner School, the student may wish to take part in the egular day at Cooper, or spend the remainder of the lay at Vo-Tech. Courses offered in Inner School vary. Some relate to basic skills while others let the student pecialize in some skill, interest, or talent. A few of the jnique classes are German, Action Chemistry, Ecology, ind Fundamental Math. 28 — lr n r School 1. By George! I think he's got it! Mr. McCarthy (Inner School Staff) 2. Typing I, Business Law, Gregg Shorthand, and Business Machines are a few of the business classes offered. With the exception of Typing I, these classes are available only to juniors and seniors. In the classes, teachers stress the importance of basic skills. Once the student has acquired these skills, the remainder of the material comes much easier. 30 — Buiinon Business— 31 “Communication In Depth” Each sophomore takes two communication courses in which they read, write, and react. As a sophomore, they get enough experience at these, so even if they don't take many more communication courses, they can get by. Enrollment was up in both composition and literature courses. The average student wanted a varied reading list in literature, while in composition he wanted to learn the basic writing skills. The reading lab was an interesting place this year. There are many machines that improve and strengthen the reader. 32 Communications 1. Mr. DeGuise 2. Mr. Cade 3. Ms. Zabel 4. Ms. Kludt 5. Mr. Phillips 6. It is o progressive ook at the history of America. This is the kind of course that reminds us of jur event-filled past. It is the reason that we are now celebrating our bicentennial. 20th century explorers are juniors taking World Area Studies. Using lewspapers and library files, students discover the cultural differences of lotions all over the globe. Through exploring, students gain an understanding of the various people of the world. In Social Problems the curriculum remained the same as in previous years. rhere was, however, a field tested experimental religion course. It will nopefully become a new social studies elective. Mr. S. Schmidt, the instructor, feels that a religion course is a necessity for one who is to understand the advancement of civilization. The course is designed to “teach and learn about religions, and not to teach religion. Interpersonal Relations is a Social Studies class recently incorporated into the curriculum. The major objective of the class is to prepare students for the working with others. Social is doing a lot for the future decision-makers. It isn’t telling the students what to believe, but it is teaching them about the choices they have and how to go about making them. Sociol — 35 So Psych Up! PYSCHOLOGY is defined as the study of behavior. Because psychology is a relatively new field, many students sign up without really knowing what it’s all about. Mr. Boedekker feels the course has grown considerably since its start six years ago. Although a textbook has been introduced for the first time this year, most of the class time is still spent on active experiments and activities. These include memory techniques, sample I.Q. tests, and even handwriting analysis. Psychology Seminar is offered second semester to students who have shown interest or inspiration in Psych I. This select group explores more deeply what they have already learned and set up experiments with white rats. 38 — Psychology ■IP “Playing” Around The Drama classes are still some of the most popular English electives at Cooper. In these classes, students receive a wide variety of knowledge. The week is divided into two sections — note days and activity days. On the note days they study the history of drama. On the activity days they do acting exercises and practice their short skits. Along with classroom assignments the students must critique a number of plays each quarter. They can go to them on their own or can go with their class during school time. Each drama student is invited to try out for the musical, one-act, winter play, and the spring play during the school year. 1. Rick Hermes being aided with his make-up. 2. Mr. Cunningham 3. Intro to Theater class. Drama — 39 “Key” To Understanding Music Music Theory took a little while to get started this year with Mr. Spangler taking over for Mr. Tempel, but by the second quarter things were going pretty smoothly. This class is a year long with the beginning being the basics and the conclusion arranging and conducting. Mixed in are the melodic and rhythmic dictations, counterpoint writing, and then four-part writing. Since the class is mostly college-bound music students, they chose many of their assignments. One of them was to report on a composer. They researched and many performed music or played a recording that showed the style of their composer. This is a class that is difficult, yet interesting and necessary for the college music student. Intro to Music was redesigned to appeal to those students interested in the great music of the past. Through the class they also learn the basics of theory. During the year they visited Orchestra Hall and celebrated Beethoven's birthday. 40 Music Th«ory lnlro !o Musk 1. The band program added another band into the program: Concert Wind Ensemble is the new addition. Marching Band combined with Robbinsdale and Armstrong and played at a Vikings game this year. They worked hard and put together a good show. The Orchestra for the first time played at Homecoming and at the National Honor Society Induction. It was Mr. Kloos' first year as conductor. For their winter concert. Symphonic Wind Ensemble hosted the principal trumpet player from the Minnesota Orchestra. This spring. Jazz Ensemble participated in a district wide jazz festival. They led up to it by practicing both in and out of school. 42 — Conwl Wind Entemble 1. SWE: TR: D. Michael, S. Werner, S. Nelson, D. Schwichtenberg, B. Olson. MR: G. Lee, D. Sybrant, J. Bray, C. They went to contest this Spring. Contest this year changed. Solo and ensemble were the same. Large groups went only to state. After all the contests and concerts were done for the year the choir took their annual trip. Madrigals were very busy this year. They sang at the Victorian Christmas Fair downtown for two weekends. Two of their other appearances were at a church service and at a Senior Citizen's Christmas Party. They went to Macalester College where both groups performed for each other. 46 — Madrigal Choir Council I. Choir Council: TR: T. Carlton, J. Irvin, R. Reid (President), J. Grove, T. Witry. BR: B. Many interested students learned about “black holes and neutron stars. There were also many peculiar things about our own solar system to be learned. The course included morning and evening labs for students to observe the moon craters. Mars, Venus and other planets. With the addition of a few new courses here at Cooper in the past few years, students are discovering a fresh interest in math. Four main types of math courses are offered depending upon the student's level of interest. There are in-depth courses designed for students headed for fields such as dentistry, medicine, and chemistry. There are also less intensified courses in which the student encounters day-to-day problems such as balancing a checkbook or working with income tax. Vocational schools may have certain requirements for entrance — traditional courses are offered with a simple approach. To widen the horizon, these courses are further extended for the student planning to attend college. 52 — MolKomolici 1. Ms. Bugge with Becky Wyrick. 2. Mr. Thoreson, Ms. Bugge, Mr. Buffington. 3. Home Ec offers classes for both boys and girls, beginners and advanced — as well as gourmet cooks. Clothing courses offer creative, tailoring and advanced approaches to Home Economics occupations. Courses such as Child in the Family and Family in the Modern World prepare the individual for later life. A special unit taken by Home Ec students this year was Cake Decorating. Students displayed their creativity by an array of cakes ranging from panda bears to Minnie Mouse. The Home Ec program along with its instructors has much to offer the student with the interest and the desire to learn. 56 — Horn Economic 1. Bill Dicrs sews his down jacket. 2. Ed. this year was much different than in previous years. Sophomores were required to take one semester of Phy. Ed. which was coed. Unlike years before, juniors and seniors could take Phy. Ed., get credit for it, and choose the type of class they’d like. Contact Team, Conditioning, Racket Sports, Recreational Team, and Individual Sports were some of the choices. Outdoor Education, another choice, dealt with camping and related items necessary for survival outside. 58 — Phy. Ed. 1. Mr. Johnson 2. Ms. Froh 3. Becky Kowalke in the Archery room. 4. The missing teacher was Mr. Gilmer. He became seriously ill and was unable to teach. Ms. Kathy Albers, who had been a student teacher at Cooper, stepped in to take his place. Lack of space — the other problem — remained unsolved. There were too many students to fit into each class. This meant that there was less individual help for each student. Though the students' arms were cramped, their creativity wasn’t. One of the more unusual projects was a bouquet of mistletoe painted over the door of room 117. In all their work the students proved that the lack of space doesn’t lead to lack of imagination. AM —60 8:00 PM •SPffi JDffiiSl STUDENTS $1.50 1. Girl painting on wall. 2. Homecoming this year was a great success as we succeeded in whomping the Kennedy Eagles in our Homecoming football game. Our Homecoming slogan was “Hawks fly. Eagles die ’ and they did just that. The preceding game highlights included the continental breakfast and the coronation of Homecoming Queen, Donna Lund. Following the game came the brautwurst feed, casino night, the alumni donut dunk and the Homecoming dance. Dark Star supplied the music and entertainment at the dance. It’s not that the cheerleaders, bands and performing groups were bad, but that an audience was lacking. The bleachers at the voluntary pep tests were sparsely filled. The mandatory pep tests were filled, but audience response was minimal. Many thanks to the cheerleaders, bands and other spirit groups that tried to make these events successful. Musical — 77 1 10 In The Shade This year's musical, 110 In The Shade, was not a familiar play, but that didn’t stop the cast and crews from making it a complete success. The play takes place in a drought stricken western town from dawn to midnight of a summer day. The action revolves around Lizzie Curry, Starbuck the Rainmaker, and File, the town sheriff. Lizzie is afraid of becoming an old maid because File, the man she loves, pays no attention to her. She has almost given up any hope of finding love when Starbuck comes to town. He shows Lizzie how beautiful she really is and becomes her new romantic interest. In the end. File and Starbuck vie for Lizzie’s love, and File wins. Janet Grove, as Lizzie, gave a memorable performance. Two of her songs, “Raunchy” and Old Maid brought down the house. Terry Carlson and Steve Ek, as File and Starbuck respectively, played their roles well. The character with the most audience appeal was Jimmy Curry, Lizzie's younger brother. The part was played perfectly by Mark Ferree. Although one performance was cancelled because of a snowstorm, 110 In The Shade was still a great success. 78 — Musical Cast Lizzie Curry .... After early season problems in the Lincoln and Robbinsdale games resulted in losses, the Hawks came together and kept growing as a team for the rest of the season. Though they played well during the Regional playoffs, they met a tough Richfield team who abruptly shut the door on an 8-5-5 season. Three players from Cooper were selected for All-Conference honors. They were senior Scott Anderson, who was also voted the team's Most Valuable player-senior Tom Tygeson, and Bruce Stanchfield, who was the first junior ever picked for All-Conference from Cooper. Tim Greene, another junior, was Cooper’s Most Improved player this year. The Hawks show great promise for the future. Many juniors lettered this year and the Junior Varsity team posted a 14-1-3 record. New JV coach, Gary Wilson, is very enthusiastic and has great pride in his team's accomplishments. These facts along with increasing attendance, publicity, and appearances of the Marching Band at games seems to indicate that more and more at Cooper are believing that Soccer’s King. Soccer —87 Strong Regional Finish One of the finest years in the history of the Cooper Cross Country team was capped by the team's fourth place finish in the Regional Meet. Outstanding underclassmen supported a fine senior squad. Team unity was provided by the leadership of senior cocaptains Bob Zeidler and Bill Fodstad. While the team concept was kept throughout the season, there were notable individual performances. Fodstad ran good races in both the Sub-Regions and Regions to send him into the State Meet. His excellent times during the season gave him second place in Cooper's All-Time Top 15. Cooper's premier girl runner, Cindy Seikkula, also had a good season. She concluded three great years with a first place finish in the Lake Conference Meet. Both Bill Fodstad and Cindy made All-Conference first team. Coach Fischer had much pride and respect for this year's strong team. He called the high Region finish a great achievement due to the fact that many of the state’s cross country powerhouses also appeared in the meet. Coach Anderson felt let down by the lack of interest in tennis. Although tennis is a popular sport, many capable girls decided not to go out for the team. Those who did join practiced hard, but were unable to put it all together and win, finishing with a 1 -8 record. The team had only three seniors this year, which allows for a more experienced team returning next year. GirU Tennit — 91 Bumps No Grind A change in coaches proved to be beneficial for the girls’ volleyball team this year. Coach Milan Mader said, “This is a good group of girls to work with.” He feels that the team was a dedicated team. They practiced long, hard hours, even coming in on Saturdays. The girls were skillful individuals who worked as a team unit on the courts. They also had persistent good attitudes throughout the season. These are the reasons for their 13-5 record. In Regional competition, they won their first-round match, defeating Richfield 2-0. However, the team suffered a disappointing loss to Orono, losing 0-2. The girls had a good season, but they felt they did not achieve all of their goals. 92 — Volloyball 1. Varsity: TR: Mgr. P. Miller, P. Melling, M. Griggs, D. Oliveria, L. Ringwelski, K. Schik. During the course of the season, the team had a goal to improve their past seasonal record. The Lake Conference teams were split into two divisions, the Red and the Blue. There were six teams in the Red division including Cooper. The girls’ final record for the season was 3 wins and 2 losses. One of the losses was to Minnetonka, the State Champions. The teams also changed from Region 5 to the North Metro Region. Their Regional finish was fourth, just 3 points behind third place Armstrong. There was also a State Meet this year for the first time since 1942. Cooper qualified two swimmers, Bonnie Bobleter and Anne Duxbury, and one diver, Michele Stuntebeck. Coach Jan Mathews was joined by a new assistant coach, Jeff Day. Both coaches felt the team had one of their best seasons ever. The team lost four of the five games by one touchdown or less. Traditions established a 7-0 win over Armstrong and a 28-21 win over Robbinsdale for the first time ever. Cooper also put back to back wins over Eisenhower (a team they have never lost to) and Kennedy for the first time in six years. Coach Sullivan attributes the team’s success to strict discipline on and off the field. Strong leadership was provided by cocaptains John Miller and Dan Quam. Five school records were broken in the 1975 season. Dale Novak set the record for rushing 566 yards in one season, Mark Hentges passed for 208 yards in one game. Stan Hill had 25 receptions in one season; Hill also had 38 receptions for his career, and the team was able to recover 19 fumbles for the season. In 1975, the boy’s basketball team fought to a 3rd place finish in the State Tournament, a definite first for Cooper. The '75 Hawks were mostly graduating seniors; and when they left, a small group of up-and-coming juniors and sophomores were left to fill the void. These young men came into the 75-76 with heads high, fighting, working, and putting out effort that glorified the bicentennial feeling. But the big loss of graduating talent and the new players' inexperience took its toll. The team rode the track of a long, hard, losing season. A strong sophomore team sent players to the Varsity ranks. At times our buckets team found it hard to keep going. With other schools having 4 years of competition behind them. Cooper wins were hard to come by, but the small 6-girl team found something to cheer about in individual performances. Their times improved throughout the season and these efforts set the ground work for future growth. The boys made major strides in Conference competition. They won 4 more meets than the 1975 skiers, this being accomplished with only 2 seniors, Tom Jungroth and Norm Gartner. Coach O’Hara expressed confidence in the 1977 team, because 11 underclassmen will return for the Hawks, in addition to any rookies who realize that Cooper Cross Country is getting stronger all the time. The new varsity coach, Ken Staples, feels he had a great team to work with, but they played all the top schools. Every non-conference team they played, except Park Center, was at one time rated in the top 10 in the state. Even with their losing season the Hawks drew record crowds at the recently opened New Hope Ice Arena. The games always proved to be exciting and interesting. The team took their first road trip ever, and competed in the Rochester Invitational. The lost to Rochester John Marshall, and tied Rochester Mayo 3-3. In 1776, many revolutionary things happened; a new country was established, Betsy Ross fashioned a flag and man's rights were recognized and fought for. The USA has been changing ever since and today, 200 years later, things are only slightly different. It's still basically the same country, but nowadays both men and women manufacture the flags, and all people's rights are being fought for, including women's rights. Thus, Cooper High School has an inter-scholastic girls basketball team. The young ladies of this first team were typical of any experimental group. Being realistic, they strove only to improve and increase their individual skills, team play, confidence and enjoyment of the game. Due to lack of experience, senior leadership, and instinctive talent Cooper's girls team found it hard to be competitive, and yet they showed their true color in a well-fought 33-32 loss to Robbinsdale, a senior dominated team. Next year's captains Yvonne Doll, who was chosen All-Conference, and Cindy Frayseth will be leading virtually the same team into a hopefully competitive and successful season, which could hold more firsts for Cooper basketball. 116 — Girl Basketball 1. To belong to this club, you must have a B average, be involved in service areas, and be judged by your teachers on leadership and character. December eighth was the day that the new members were given a white carnation to wear to signify being a new member. Old members gave the inductees their flowers. Red carnations were worn by the old members. The four officers wore red and white carnations. On the night of December fifteenth, the new members were inducted into the National Honor Society. The staff was made up of mostly juniors and sophomores with a junior, Heidi Meyers, for editor-in-chief. They had some trouble meeting deadlines because of the inexperience of the staff. The Hawk's Quill staff got their office back this year, which made it much more convenient for the staff members. wu n M nt mu i w Hawk ' Quill — 125 1976 Along with the Bicentennial, 1976 marks the twelfth printing of the Talons. The yearbook staff has captured another year of Cooper and pulled it together to build this book. We have tried to intertwine and weave Time throughout these pages and to bring out the otherwise, unnoticed kid. These are the ones that make up the majority of Cooper and tomorrow will make up the majority of our country. In spite of the chaotic rush before each deadline, the new yearbook format, and over half of the staff being greenhorns, we made it through. An inexpressible thank you to Vern Hollister for his endurance of us during this past year and his offerings of experience. Much appreciation is extended from us to Scherling-Pletsch Studios and Taylor Publishing. It would be impossible fo individually acknowledge all of those who donated their time and efforts that went into the making of this book. The year is divided into four seasons: Fall, Winter I, Winter II, and Spring; and during each, different sports are played. The girls may choose to participate in any or all of the sports. The girls, by attending, earned points which were totalled at the end of the year and awards were presented. Although the number of participants in the past years has become smaller, there still is a large attendance and G.A.A. will definitely be kept at Cooper. 1. Ahhh . . .Hi there! 2. G.A.A. —129 Cheerleaders The girls, for the second year at Cooper, were divided into separate squads for cheering a specific sport. The fall squad shared the cheering of football, soccer and cross-country while all the winter squads took turns with gymnastics. Jo Thureson was captain of fall cheerleaders with Patty McFeely captain of winter squads. A new method for choosing these girls was tried. Three of the five girls in a squad were chosen last spring, the other two during the fall. This enabled new and more girls to try out. However, there were mixed feelings on the success of this system. And so these cheerleaders stood out on the field, the court, the ice, the mats, and the pool, to attempt to put some of that so-called ‘‘enthusiasm” into the students of Cooper. 1. The show opened with a large clock striking midnight. This symbolized the time for all the toys to come alive and enter the world of make believe. The girls portrayed different toys and their movements. Some were soldiers and rubber duckies, while others were dolls and guns. All in all the show was a great success and the girls had a good time. After a successful year as a Cooper student, Francoise graduated with the class of 1 976. On United Nations Day in October, the club sponsored the movie. Dr. Zhivago. Over a thousand students saw the film, and A.F.S. earned enough money to continue their program. Also in October, Sue Kempf was selected as an American Abroad candidate under A.F.S. auspices. In February the club exchanged visits with a rural community, Hutchinson, Minnesota, and the students enjoyed their mutual experience. The A.F.S. Club has been an activity since Cooper opened in 1964. The Club has welcomed nineteen students from across the seas since 1964. It also has given nine Cooper students the opportunity to live in another country. Active in almost everything imaginable, the junior class contributed their creativity, zest and lots of originality to the Musical, Declam, Orchestra, Cheerleading, many Sports and a variety of other organizations. The Junior Class Cabinet and its officers were formed late last year. Thus began the organization of the Junior-Senior Prom, which is the Cabinet's main responsibility. This year’s Prom, Stairway to Heaven, was the second prom to be held at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. To raise money for the prom, the cabinet sold candy and helped put the winter play, “Under the Gaslight, into production. There are many memories of the year that has passed, but there is even greater anticipation of the year to come for the Class of “77. Junior Class Cabinet Officers: Jeri Josephson, Laurie Edberg, Shelly Peterson, Rick Hermes, Carol Kilcullen, Jody Boeddecker. 1 2 years ago we were just starting our school years and through these years, we have seen changes in the curriculum that have altered our life styles. Winning your Homecoming Football Game and listening to rumors of an indoor graduation ceremony, have brought both happiness and sorrow to our hearts. Somewhere in the Bicentennial madness, we have lost the true Spirit of '76. With the Legislature trying to pass a Bill raising the drinking age to 19, more seniors were sticking up for themselves and attending a Political Party Precinct Caucus. Many students felt they would lose all sense of responsibility if they were not considered an adult at age 18. Senior Class Officers, J. Docken, J. Miller, Pres. R.
