On Thursday, August 8, 1974, Richard M. Nixon resigned from his office after 5 2 years of leadership. In less than two years after being reelected by the largest majority in history, he was driven from office by the Watergate scandal. This was only the beginning of a chain of events that affected everyone at Cooper in one way or another. Gerald Ford was sworn in as the nation's 38th President on August 9, 1974. One of President Ford's first duties was to select and nominate a new Vice President. His choice was former New York governor of 15 years, Nelson Rockefeller. For the first time in history, the country had both a President and a Vice President who had not been elected by the voter. Another of Ford's first duties was to curb inflation in 1975. He predicted an inflation slowdown by early 1975 and later outlined a twelve point voluntary plan for Americans to become inflation fighters and energy savers. President Ford once said, Our long national nightmare is over. — but what looms just beyond the horizon ? Photo courtety of Nowool Inc.
