£ J. Cooper Senior High New Hope, Minnesota Volume XI Table of Contents Horizons Sky meets earth Education meets student Student meets world Broadening The world fears a new experience more than it fears anything. Because a new experience displaces so many old experiences . . . The world doesn't fear a new idea. It can pigeon-hole any idea. But it can't pigeon-hole a real, new experience. nwnimi Education is a social process. . Education is growth.. . Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. In ourselves and our community, expansion has been a necessity. Everything that has happened has altered us as persons. While having been bombarded with national and world issues through television, radio, and newspapers, local happenings have had a closer affect on people's daily lives. Construction and openings of buildings such as the Fine Arts Park and Orchestra Hall have contributed to the area's cultural development. Gubernatorial candidates tried to widen outlooks throughout their campaigns. District representatives came a bit closer to the individual through the immediate community. With such things happening around us, and touching our lives, expansion of knowledge in the community and in ourselves was unavoidable. II On Thursday, August 8, 1974, Richard M. Nixon resigned from his office after 5 2 years of leadership. In less than two years after being reelected by the largest majority in history, he was driven from office by the Watergate scandal. This was only the beginning of a chain of events that affected everyone at Cooper in one way or another. Gerald Ford was sworn in as the nation's 38th President on August 9, 1974. One of President Ford's first duties was to select and nominate a new Vice President. His choice was former New York governor of 15 years, Nelson Rockefeller. For the first time in history, the country had both a President and a Vice President who had not been elected by the voter. Another of Ford's first duties was to curb inflation in 1975. He predicted an inflation slowdown by early 1975 and later outlined a twelve point voluntary plan for Americans to become inflation fighters and energy savers. President Ford once said, Our long national nightmare is over. — but what looms just beyond the horizon ? Photo courtety of Nowool Inc. Changes and new experiences at Cooper this year were numerous. The changeover from modular to traditional scheduling was, in part, responsible for the additions and alterations in and around Cooper. In previous years, modular scheduling provided the student with approximately 40% Independent Study time. However, some members of the student body were not utilizing their I.S. time properly, so a more traditional schedule consisting of an 8 period day came into existence at Cooper and swept away modular scheduling. The student was now making every effort to adjust to the new system. There was no longer a variety of classes in a day, or an abundance of free time — during or after school. The student was forced to utilize his time and survive the rather blah day via one lunch and free period. Advantages come with disadvantages, though. Additions like a Reading Laboratory and an allelectric typing room were set up to improve the students' skills. The Independent Material Centers (IMC) were centralized for easier access to the student. Films and tapes were also made available in the library. Outdoor classrooms were mostly used by the Art, Phy Ed, and Science Departments. Plants and flowers planted in the arboretum last year blossomed and were observed by many. Also blossoming was Girls' Interscholastic Sports. Increasing state competition, along with more participation resulted in a growing number of female jocks at Cooper. Homecoming was another success in 1974. With more activities available, the students interests were met, and many more participated during homecoming week. Floats were constructed for the first time in years. To a Cooper student, broadening was, in a sense, everyday life. Experiencing the new, and pushing on was a part of 1975. is Academics 17 1. Students participating in OE, DE, T l, HE, and WE learn on-the-job training. Students leave school at various times to go to their prospective jobs. Students applying for the programs are interviewed and screened before being accepted. The theory of work programs is to initiate the student into the working world before graduation. 1. They study music, history, and literature in ways that these subjects become enjoyable and interesting. The language lab also plays an important part in the language student's life. Here they talk in their” language. French I and II are using new books this year that place an emphasis on vocabulary words. French III still works on the verb tenses — which is one of the main keys to the language. French history, Art, and a few books are covered in French IV while literature is gone over in depth in French V. For the French student, the variety of subjects is great. German levels deal with about the same subjects as French. Talking in complete German is stressed, taking notes that make sense is practiced, and understanding what is read is important. They also sang and danced folk dances at many school events. Spanish levels are basically the same, too. New projects this year were the painting of Spanish Mexican scenes on the walls. They also began to sing and dance using Spanish music. New filmstrips added enjoyment to class and learning. With travel growing in popularity, knowing another language is no longer an unused portion of learning. 1. Mr. Karhu and Ms. Erdman?? 2. Home Economics 3. The Listening Lab 4. After taking courses in the Business area, students have the ability to work in offices as secretaries, accountants, or clerks. Such classes offered are record- keeping, accounting, typing, shorthand, and business machines. Although complaints are heard of too much work , one is more than likely to benefit from taking a course in Business. 1. Instead of being compared to other students, they take Math, Science, Social and English in Inner School. They also may take any of Cooper's elective courses. Work of their classes is represented in their rooms. The teachers of Inner School also pursue their interests by teaching other subjects — Math one day, English the next. One change in the program was the movement from the cafeteria to a combination of rooms with partitions that separate different ideas. The Inner School organized and put on a play that was enjoyed by many. Mr. Phillips volunteered his time. Students working by themselves, for themselves, is the main objective of any school; and in Inner School it's working. Inner School— 29 0. J. Hartsook 1. Mr. Thoreson lending a helping hand. 2. A wide selection of courses offers the possibility for a student to specialize in several language art areas. With the exception of the sophomores, students may select from a variety of Composition and Literature courses that satisfy both their interests and abilities. The sophomores, however, have their own exclusive Communications program which consists of a semester each of American Literature and Group Communica tions. A new addition to the Communications Department this year was the Reading Lab which was formed to provide opportunities for students to improve their reading skills. When becoming discouraged in any composition class, remember the words of Ernest Hemingway who said I have tried simply to write the best I can; sometimes I have good luck and write better than lean. Mr. Swenson 34 — Social Pasf, Present, Future Instead of just telling what happens, the Social classes are now telling why things happen. Each grade has a specific course to take with a specific topic that is covered. Yet, when taken successively, they fit together and make our World easier to understand. As a sophomore in American Studies, we see America begin and grow to its present state. The lifestyle of America is brought to us through books, slides, movies and speakers. American Studies helps us understand our country through what has already happened. World Area Studies shows the relationships between the United States and other countries by going into the history of these countries. By this, we also can begin to see some of the future. Social Problems works with the future by covering Population control, the economy, and other related topics. If we can understand the world we live in today, the future will not seem so uncertain. Social — 35 36 — Social Of Mice and Men The Study of Behavior, as many students have found, is quite interesting and useful. Psychology is much more extensive at Cooper than it is at most other high schools. We have two courses: Psychology I and Psychology Seminar. Psych I deals with explanations on why people act the way they do, when they do. They work with abnormal psychology, volunteer experiments, child psychology, but not therapy. Mr. Boeddeker then chooses some students from Psych I and they make up Psychology Seminar. Here they work mostly on open lab time with Skinner boxes and rats. They try to teach their rats to do simple tricks. This helps them to understand simple behavior patterns. Mr. Boeddeker said that since the course began a few years ago, much progress has been made and the class is much more organized. Psychology — 37 . Slinkying in Physics 2. Mr. Fredrickson; Physics 3. So that's what Genetics is! 38 — Scienco Science, however, is not all toil and trouble. There are many classes a student can choose from that can be found not only interesting and useful, but also enjoyable. The three traditional courses are still Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Each is a year long and has a specific area that is dealt with. All of the courses are becoming more and more important in our constantly advancing world. Each student must also take one semester of Health to meet the state requirements. The general attitude of the students seems to be enthusiastic. They have the desire to learn, but are combining it well with the desire to enjoy. Scionco — 39 40—Math Why Math? Because it is one of the courses that Cooper requires in order to graduate. You must have at least one year when your credits are counted. Until a few years ago, the traditional courses often caused problems when a student was deciding which course to sign up for. Now, with the addition of more basic courses, all students can be satisfied. Depending on a student's needs, there are four main types of math courses to choose from. Some courses deal with everyday mathematical problems, such as income tax, checkbooks, etc. Vocational schools often have requirements for entrance, and Cooper offers traditional courses with a more basic approach. These courses are then expanded for the students planning to meet college requirements. The last group is the courses of greater depth. These are for those planning on careers such as doctors, dentists, and chemists. With all of these courses to choose from, the selecting of one doesn't appear too difficult. 1. Math — 41 42 — Industrial Arts The Future Is in Our Hands Our carpenters, mechanics, electricians, architects, printers, welders, machinists, and photographers of the future are being trained in the Industrial Arts program. They are a few of the men and women who will build a world for us to live in. The classes are arranged for both beginners and the advanced. The levels are designed for the individual to make his own schedule for his three years. New Industrial Art classes this year were Photography and two classes for girls; Power and Electricity and also Materials for the Home. They were added to satisfy the demand of the students. All students, whatever their specific needs are, can be reached by a Cooper Industrial Arts class to better themselves and the world. Industrial Arts — 43 Experience. . . . . . for both homes and vocations is the goal tor Home Economic courses. Home Ec offers foods courses for guys and gals, beginners and advanced, and gourmet cooks as well. Clothing courses offer Creative, Advanced, and Tailoring classes for the beginner, advanced, and Intermediate respectively. Other courses such as Child in the Family, and Family in the Modern World prepare the individual for later family life. Several speakers were brought in to give talks and demonstrations to various classes. The Home Ec Program, along with its instructors, has much to offer anyone who has interest and the desire to learn. 44 — Home Ec 1. Stuffing a turkey, whet do you think I'm doing? 2. Of course, the traditional I Oth grade Phy Ed class is required, which concentrated on selected sports such as volleyball, basketball, and tennis for all, gymnastics and wrestling for guys, archery and golf for girls. The student who wishes to continue on in Phy Ed classes may choose from a variety of elective classes. The girls may select from Lifetime Sports, Team Sports, or Recreational Activities, while guys select Elective Phy Ed which includes team and Individual sports, and other activities. The Phy Ed program is expanding to meet the students' needs — something a department should always strive to do. 46 — Phy Ed 1. Mr. Olson 2. Mr. Johnson 3. Zero serving zero 4. Spike! 5. A student could choose a class to fit what he was interested in. Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, and the making of Jewelry were all popular classes. Through demonstrations, the students are shown how to use the various materials. They are shown different techniques and allowed to create at their own will. Some projects are more spectacular than others, but each has its own personal importance to the creator. Art —49 Learning Through Doing In forms of enrollment, ell the desses deeling with dreme ere doing very well. Most students sign up for Introduction to Theeter first semester end Thee ter Production second semester. In these they learn of the history, make-up techniques, acting, set, end direction end production of the theater. They do a series of make-ups for a variety of characters and get into groups to put on short plays. The students in these classes are also encouraged to audition for the Musical one-act, and the spring and winter plays. Good experience for a potential college drama student comes out of these classes and also just the ability to talk and act in front of people is rewarding. SO — Drome A Musician . . . . . . isn't simply just anyone who can sing or play an instrument. They must have the knowledge of the fundamentals of music. Music Theory is a pre-college course for an interested music student. It deals with time and key signatures, major and minor chords, ear training, and the writing of music. Recordings are used to show certain types of music and techniques. Though the course is challenging, those taking it agree that the combination of music and Mr. Tempel make it interesting and very worthwhile. 1. Drama Students practice skills. 2. Mr. Cunningham 3. They could enter either as a solo or in an ensemble group, or both. They could also audition for the All-State Choir. This year, Concert Choir was asked to sing at the opening session of the Minnesota Music Educators Association. They performed there with three other choirs, doing a program, which they also did earlier, under one of the greatest liturgical directors in the World, Mr. Salomanovich. The Madrigal Singers also participated in a festival at Armstrong with other Madrigal groups from around Minnesota. Starting the week-long celebration was T-shirt day, followed by farmer day. Wednesday, officially kicked off the ceremonies with 50's day and a morning pepfest featuring celebrities Bill Brown of the Vikings, and Herb Carneal, announcer for the Twins. Not to be forgotten were the faculty cheerleaders leading an orange and blue battle between the students. The highlight was the coronation ceremony preceded by a Whopper eating contest, variety show, and a rock band in the auditorium. Our football team took on the Wayzata Trojans in an exciting game followed by the traditional alumni donut dunk, and a dance for the students. 1. An excellent cast was chosen early in the fall. After hours of long rehearsals, opening night was a sellout. Director John Cunningham said visually, musically, and story-wise, it was an enjoyable experience for all. Both the male and female stars of the play made drastic changes in their appearance in order to authenticize the production. The lead roles went to Val Nelson who portrayed Anna Leonowens, and to Dave Rodrick who played the King of Siam. The play received rave reviews by all in attendance. The winter play's student director was Leslie Halsted, and adult director was David Ludvig. The story centered around Stoney Stevenson, played by Tom McDonald, a poet from a typical family. Stoney won the Blast-Off Space Food Jingle Contest. He encounters a strange land and has many abstract experiences. The play contained one person's view on life. Touring Ploy — 81 Terrific. . . ... is the best word to describe this year's soccer team. Their final record was 12-5-2 and the team finished 4th in state. Coach Phlegar gives credit for such a fantastic season to experience. Experience is the big thing. They've been through it before so they were ready this year, Phlegar says. Since most team members played as juniors, they were used to working together as a team. Keith Johnson was voted Most Valuable player and Dennis Bouta was voted Most Improved player. This year three all-conference players were chosen from Cooper. They were Tom Luby, Tad Frayseth and Dean Brown. Tom Luby was also chosen for All-State. Hopefully this year's accomplishments will start a winning tradition for Cooper soccer. 84 — Soccer FRONT ROW: G. Gardner, J. Davis, T. Greene, M. Okerstrom, J. Lennartson, R. Sucky, C. Cardinal, P. The winners receive a knitted orange scarf and free passes to all football games and banquets for the rest of their lives. The orange scarf winners this year were Jim Pearson, Dave Quam, Dan Bray and Craig Johnson by the point system and Jim Blohm by breaking a school record. All-conference members are Craig Johnson and Dan Bray. Honorable mention for all-conference are Dave Quam and Bert Luer. Coach Sullivan summed up the season in this way, We left our heart and soul on the field at the game against Robbinsdale. The team was really fired up for that game, which was a let down. It was very critical to our success. Coach Sullivan goes on to explain that the Lake Conference is the toughest conference. It consists of the elite high school football teams. Sullivan says, The success can't just be measured by the wins and losses, but more by what the team brings into the game and what they get out of it. FRONT ROW: D. Freeman, J. Showalter, S. Hill, M. Gymnast id — 93 Repetition and Strength. . . . . . are two key factors in gymnastics which can easily determine the difference between a good and a great gymnast. Hours are spent on each piece of equipment, mastering and perfecting individual skills. Graduation last year had taken most of the best gymnasts, leaving a young team abounding in potential. With so many new team members type of progress was different. Learning was the key rather than mastering and polishing skills. This year graduation didn't affect the team so badly. Improvements include new coach, Mrs. Forseth, new asst, coach Mr. Mader and a new dual meet format. Along with these comes what girls' gymnastics is all about . . . the girls. This year's sophomores comprised %'s of the team. The dual meets were held along with the boys. This created new problems. On a number of occasions one event would finish before another and audiences applause would cause a loss of concentration for the participant still working on his her routine. Conclusively, the problems encountered in a dual meet set-up were not enough to dampen the spirit and potential of the girls. It appears that girls' gymastics is here to stay. TOP ROW: D. Nichols, J. In post-season competition, the quality of wrestling seemed to taper off. The team finished second in District 18. Six Hawk wrestlers participated in Regionals at Mound. Ms. Hagen believes that Practice, hard work, and dedication gave the best defenses on the high school level. Advancing to District competition, the girls were eliminated after losing their second match; therefore, not qualifying for regional or state meets. Divided into an A-Squad and a B-Squad, the girls' competition was much larger and more experienced than our small, young team. Finishing with a record of 3-10, the B-Squad was a team with little experience of playing together. The cagers held off Minneapolis Central 56 53 for the Region D championship and a first-time ticket to the state tournament. The team proceeded to their first game of the tournament against St. Paul Highland Park, with the mental attitude of playing a relaxed, but hard played scrimmage. Cooper led 28-27 at halftime and finished with an impressive 47-36 win. The fans went wild. But the team then suffered a disappointing loss to Little Falls, by a score of 58-53. Little Falls did not have an easy win though. With 2:05 remaining, a free throw from Hanson put Cooper ahead 51-50. Little Falls came back with three more points, and two steals to put the Flyers ahead to win. (Little Falls beat Robbinsdalo for the Class AA crown and proceeded on to beat Class A title holder Chisholm in the championship game.) Cooper still wanted that third place trophy. Playing against Mankato-West, (losers to Robbinsdale) the Hawks led48-38 late in the third quarter. But Mankato West pulled within two points with 5:44 remaining in the game. Cooper again went to work • and a layup and two free throws by Meyer along with two free throws by Hanson made it a nice win of 59-57 for the third place spot in Class AA. To play as well as Cooper did throughout the state tourney, it took a total team effort, an element that may have been lacking at times throughout the season. The Cagers won their first seven games of the season, but lost nine of their last 13 regular season games. The coaches, players, parents, and basketball fans will agree that not only were the events of the tournament exciting, but memorable as well. TOP ROW: Coach Johnson, B. Marengo, J. Pearson, M. With an overall Lake Conference record of 10 2, the swimmors showed they had more strength and versatility than given credit for. This 10 2 record contributed to the impressive 5 year record of S3 14. A fantastic performance by the swimmers which capturod tho regional title, was, according to Coach Al Goodwin and Coach Dave Doten unbelievable. Every swimmer improved their times and many records were improved by as much as 5 7 seconds. Coach Doten said he has never had the opportunity to work with a group that put on such a good performance and shown so much spirit as this year's toam. After such a good performance at regions it was hard to come back the following wookond at the state meet. The team finished eleventh out of a field of 74 high school swim teams. In summary, Coach Goodwin says that the region performance was one of tho greatest coaching thrills of his career. More emphasis was put on rogions, and the team put on as good or better performance than last year's team. At the District 18 meet, the team finished in ninth place, which was three places higher than last year. Eight girls advanced to the Regional meet compared to last year's five. We didn't win or lose, said Coach Jan Mathews. In the sense of self-accomplishment, each girl had a winning season although the finishing record doesn't reveal it. 108 — Swimming 1. Student Government passed many resolutions this year. Some of them were on subjects such as open lunch, student lounge, and the lavatories. Not all of these resolutions were carried out, though, because of opposition from the administration or the School Board. But the government made it possible for the students to have a place to meet this year. A lounge was opened up in the cafeteria for this purpose. The government did help to better the environment, and in the future, conditions for the students should improve even more. 1. Mr. Blore: the Student Government's right-hand man. 2. (NHS) With the help of Mr. Kemppainen and Mr. Johansen, the new NHS advisor, Recognition Day and Induction Night were planned. White carnations were pinned on the new members by last year's old members on Recognition Day. But all was not well within the society this year. NHS met with criticism from the outside as well as the inside. Many thought NHS was worthless and accomplished nothing. Others criticized the selection process. The lack of interest in NHS has grown over the past year and the society's future is unknown. NHS did have a project going this year. The society supported an orphan from Korea. They helped to provide for her education and her everyday needs. The question arises, if the lack of enthusiasm continues to grow, how long will NHS be able to support this orphan? BOTTOM BOV : M. By placing greater importance on the individual student, hopefully, our task was accomplished. The 8 period day was one of the big changes made last fall at Cooper, and the sophomores adopted it easily into their school day. Their discoveries and errors brought them to realize that they have little time left to make important decisions for the future and search for goals in their life. 142 — Sophomorot Signe David Ahrans Alexander David Denice Andenon Anderson Lynette Amborn Greg Anderson Joy Anderson June Anderson Mike Anderson Julie Andersen Brenda Anderson Curtis Anderson Mike Anderson Robert Anderson Steven Anderson Diane Andresen Richard Andrea sen Bruce Anthony Donald Arenz Darren Debra Sophia Arnold Arnold Assimes James Astrup David Kevin Atchison Augustin Brian Aultman Brian Aydt Michele Bacher Alan Bednarek Tracy BeHord PaJ Beltz Teresa Barhorst ft Jay Bender Jan Benedict . You aren't as confused as a sophomore, or as worried about the future as a senior. Perhaps this is why the junior class was so spirited. To raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom, and to break up the monotony of winter classes, the juniors organized a Back to the Fifties Day. Bobby socks, pony-tails, and rolled up Levi's were common sights. Later, after the basketball game that evening, students danced to the sound of Jet Chevrolet and the Buick Boys. It was a memorable day for all. Outstanding junior actors included Janet Grove and Rob Reid who played the young lovers in The King and . The musical orchestra and stage crews also profited from junior class members. Many junior athletes brought honor to Cooper, including Cindy Seikkula, a nationally recognized speed skater. It is hoped that the spirit of the Junior Class (or '76) will continue next year as the spirit of America s Bicentennial. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: BR: Rob Reid, John Miller, David Hemingway. I am tossing to and fro into the dawning of the day. As sophomores we were tossed around until we found our place. We began our last steps toward graduation. That first year at Cooper we were confronted with a lot of new experiences. Starting with the traditional challenge yell at our first pep-fest. We contributed to the Dennis Berg fund, our sports had successful seasons, we received our class rings and our first annuals, thus finishing off our sophomore year only to move on to be juniors. At noonday in the bustle of man's work-time. Our junior year was a year of involvement and activity. We brought the life back into homecoming. Most kids had their licenses and cars.. This opened up a variety of new things to do. Lives became constantly busy. But again it ended. Then we were seniors. my purpose holds beyond the sunset Like most seniors we started the year with the hope to make this the best year ever. For most it has been. Nevertheless many things have changed. Things most important to us our sophomore and junior year don't have the same value. Instead our futures became our main concern. Our task at Cooper is at a close, but not our lives. The three years here have helped us set our purpose to guide us by. Believe it or not it hasn't all been in vain for anyone. 172 Seniors Mary Jo Adams Mari Lyrm Adamson Sandra Lee Albers James Rodney Almquisf Anita Marie Anderson Becky Jean Anderson Carol Jean Anderson Diana Mae Gregory Justin Anderson Anderson Kim Annette Kristie Lee Anderson Anderson Michael David Anderson Jeffrey Lynr, Arnott Edmund Joseph Arseneau Suzanne Marie Asplund Deborah Ann Atkins David Paul Andresen Cynthia Lynn Anthony Craig Curtis Sheryl Lynn Lori Elizabeth Renee Diane Sue E. The Blizzard of the Century, Cooper's student uprising over locked lavatories, another Super Bowl loss for the Vikings, and the loss of a fellow student, Andrea Scaia, are just a few events which have altered our personal growth. The 1974-1975 school year passed quickly, leaving only some good memories and some sad. We must not dwell on our memories, but look ahead to the future. You must learn day by day, year by year, to broaden your horizon. The more things you love, the more you are interested in, the more you enjoy, the more you experience. 1974-75 Talon's Staff Faculty Advisor Business Advisor Editor -in- Chief Managing Editor Academics Editor...............................Laura Larson Assistant...................................Janet Grove Athletics Editor........................Cindy Roubik Assistants...................................Anne Duxbury Pete Blomquist Business Manager.......................Candy Reed Assistant............................Debbie Linn Index Editor...................................Debra Johnson Assistant..........................Dawn Anderson Organizations Editor....................Cheryl Cole Assistant...................................Becky Bobleter Vern Hollister Caryl Bugge Mari Adamson Bonnie Caughey Photography Editor...........................Mike Lutgen Photographers.................................Ron Nelson Kevin Meintsma John Steen Rob Platzer Contributing Photographer.................Dale Beers Senior Editor..................................Jean Pray Assistant................................Marjorie Cox Student Life Editor.....................Sue Schmitz Assistant..........................Lucy McGowan Underclassmen Editor..........................Karen Gates Assistant.....................................Tom Witry Introduction Copy.............12 pt.
