Instead of waiting until Friday afternoon, for the 1971-Homecoming coronation. Queen Margo Olson was crowned on Tuesday. Oct. 12 of Homecoming Week. Queen Margo and her court reigned over a full week of festivities, including a Festival Night. Festival Night, held on Wednesday, October 13th. consisted of various clubs putting up display booths each providing entertainment while advertising their particular organization. The Homecoming slogan, “Jive the Hive carried our team into battle with the Edina Hornets on October 15, followed on October 16 with the Homecoming Dance featuring Debb Johnson. Excitement filled the air along with smoke and screaming sirens on November 10th. when Cooper suffered losses as a result of the most damaging fire in its history. What happened in the world in 1971-72? Red China was admitted to the U.N., the United States experienced a 90-day wage-price freeze, the Catholic-Protestant war in Ireland raged on, Nixon stepped up his Vietnamization program, and Cooper High School started its eighth year in operation. The school year 1971 was kicked off by sophomore orientation on August 26th. The Graduating class of 1974 was shown about the school and introduced to the various organizations. The new teacher’s initiation came on August 30. followed by the old teachers’ workshop on August 31. Classes started for the year on September 7th, on a beautiful warm fall day which, of course, added to the groans and moans from all the summer swingers. The first football game with our sister school to the west, Robbinsdalc. set the tone for the remainder of the 1971 football season. Another mood set was the first Soc Hop on September 17 featuring Regalis. Although it probably wasn’t considered a financial success. the dance was certainly enjoyed by those who attended. The college bound students made their way to College Night on Sept. 17. hosted by Armstrong High School. They were introduced to the many possibilities a-vailable when planning their futures. 0 — Copy Although many had fears that Cooper’s 1971 musical, Fiddler on (he Roof, would not be allowed to open because of the fire, come November 11th, 8:00 p.m.. the house was packed. Mike Salzwedel, as Tevye. played to sold out audiences every night as he tried to keep his town of Anatcvka free from the troubles of the world. The 1971-72 contest one-act play was Sing To Me Through Open Windows. The story tells of a nostalgic attempt to recapture lost innocence. It advanced to state following sub-district, district, and regional. Mr. Cunningham directed both of the productions. Summer Tree was chosen by Mr. Ludwig as the winter play. Proceeds went to the Junior Class Prom Fund. Mr. Phillips was the technical advisor for all of these plays. Christmas Week. 1971. was held from December 13 to the 17. Highlights included a visit from Santa Claus (alias Rob Wolak), Deck the Door day. and a special concert by the choirs. Y-tcens provided the mail service for Christmas cards again this year, and the spirit of love was in the air, thanks to the addition of several clumps of mistletoe. The week ended happily, of course, with the beginning of Christmas vacation. Snow Week was held January 17-21 and was again kicked off by the Snow Week coronation and the crowning of King Jim Stager and Queen Jean Thureson. Each day was celebrated with some activity, ranging from tobogganing to snow sculptures. The Snow Week dance was a two school effort with Armstrong, which was also celebrating their Snow Week. Jack of Hearts candidates were announced in January and included Greg Burns, Larry Dean, Steve Grucnkc. Pat Hanley, Dave Hanson, Greg Hcncke, Bruce Johnson, Mark Johanson. Mark Ka-pitan. Bruce Malone. Carl Neuberger, Steve Pitmon, Greg Plascn-cia. and Steve Tachcny. The week was capped off by the Y-teens sponsored Jack of Hearts dance. And so the year 1971-1972 ended. It was one w'hich will not easily be forgotten even if we wanted to. With the world in turmoil, Cooper seemed to be a small and insignificant part of it, but for each of us. Cooper was a large portion of our lives, and of the future. Cow-31 I. Junior Class: Craig Mommsen. Neil Franz. Denise Prey. Pam Olson. 2. Sophomore Class: Steve Pahos. Judy Campbell. Mike Burns. Plasencia. 46 - Crou Country The Hawk’s football team although beset with a syndrome of ineffectual team play was, however, a success in 71. Key individual performances were unnoticeable until the finale of the year with Richfield. For the Hawks, everything just seemed to stick. The passing team of Gaylen Englestad and Pat Kyllonen marked key air plays while the ground game by Mickey Spring showed the Hawk superiority over Richfield. Although Richfield was rated sixth in the state and some people called it an upset, the 27-19 score revealed a win for the Hawks. All conference honors went to Bryan Wenz and Mickey Spring, Pat Kyllonen was WCCO all state team. The 1972 captains are Steve Hatcher and Kevin Grundlund. The 1971 Cross-Country team was probably the best balanced team in Cooper’s history. But based upon their record, apparently the other Lake Conference teams were also strong. The harriers, plagued by injury and inexperience, ended the season with a disappointing and unrepresentative 1 and 12 record. The JV team posted a 7 and 6 season. The team fared slightly better in the District 18 meet placing I Ith out of 20 schools. One of the high points of the season was a 4th place team wise out of 52 schools at the Swain Invitational in Duluth. This is the largest meet of its kind in the nation. The most valuable player award went to sophomore Steve Plasencia. Steve broke the Cooper 3-mile record, the Cooper Sophomore record and the District 18 Sophomore record. Neil Franz will be captain of the Cross-Country team next year and with 5 of the top 7 runners returning next year the Hawks are looking forward to an exciting season. This year’s soccer team improved many times over compared to last year’s club. Our team surprised many Lake Conference teams with their opening 6-1 win over Burnsville who finished very high in their Conference. The team demonstrated their ability to mount an offensive attack by scoring over 15 goals. The defense proved themselves a solid unit with a shutout and a couple of one goal games. Most of the home games were played at the new district 281 soccer field located at 49th and Boone. This well lighted field is something to look forward to and with a little work done on it, it could easily be one of the best fields around. The team will lose less than ten seniors through graduation. With the respectable crop of sophomores received this year added to the returning juniors, nest year’s team will be a great contender in Conference competition. Mike Roemhildt and Jeff Reid were elected to captain next year’s team. Carl Neuburger was voted the Most-Valuable Player of this year’s team. 4 — Copy The defending state champions in gymnastics were determined to have another winning year. Paced by Curt Adams and junior Randy DeBruyn the Hawks were strong in tumbling and free exercise competition. As the year moved on the Hawks again proved they had championship material and would be strong contenders again for the state crown. The Lake title was decided in a quick week of tense action against the Robins and Falcons. The Hawks came out one and one and again were deprived of the Lake title. Next year the Hawks have a strong nucleus returning and will be a power. A string of freak incidents kept the Hawks wrestlers from reaching their potential this year. The worst of which was a week-long period where 60% of the varsity wrestlers were out with the flu. Despite these problems they compiled a 4-2 divisional record placing them third on the Lake Conference red division. Cooper qualified two men for the state meet. They were Carl Neuberger and Larry MacDonald. The wrestling tri-captains were Carl Neuberger. Harry Bouta and Craig Clemens. v The Cooper swimming team, co-captained by Paul Connolly and Dave Peugh, swam to their best season ever. Recording a 10-1 Lake record, the only defeat coming from third ranked Edina with a ditto of last season’s score, 47-48, the Hawks lost their chance at being Lake Conference Champs. Being ranked fourth in the state they look to next year with anticipation. Four varsity records fell throughout the season. Coach A1 Goodwin feels that the team has had a very prosperous year. Cooper’s second year ski team slid to a very successful season. Led by captains Tom Erickson, Greg Burns and Doug Holsten and Coaches Darrell Erickson and Robert Lindesmith the Hawks skiied to a 8-4 regular season record. Everyone skiied well at the District 18 meet and came in third. At the state meet Jumpers Bob Huston, Bruce Rudolph and Grant Blake, Cross-Country skiiers Neil Franz, Steve Pitmon and Wayne Wright and Slalom skiiers Craig Mommsen, Brad Swanson and Doug Holsten improved to place eighth. Coach Whitey Johnson’s young Hawk Basketball team started the season on a promising note winning two of their first three games. But injuries, rules violations and discontent all took their toll on the Hawk record. The Varsity team ended the season on the bottom of the red division. The JV fared better, ending with a 10-6 record. The Cagers are also expecting a great season next year with the entire varsity team returning. The young Hawk Hockey team coached by Bob Hammer and Ken Staples skated to one of their best seasons ever. Their 6-5-1 regular season placed them 7th in the tough Lake Conference. In the first District playoff game, the Hawks were defeated by Lincoln in the second overtime period. With only 1 varsity player graduating, the Hawks look forward to a great season next year. H««i Quill - 9V Pep club remained active in following school events, despite a decline in school spirit. Their initiation wasn’t what it had been in past years and was missed by students. A continued involvement in school activities kept morale up for the entire year. The members of Pep club were a tribute to our school as shown through their ticket-selling, button-selling and attendance at athletic events. Cooperettes, captained by Cheryl Ackerblade and under the advisement of Miss Dubbe, again improved from their previous years’ performances. Through their entertainment at Pep fests and half times every Cooperette became a familiar face to the students of Cooper high school. Their gracefulness was enjoyed by the whole student body. Cheerleading outfits were again a familiar sight on days of athletic events here at Cooper. Supporting our many fantastic teams wasn’t an easy task, but our cheerleaders did it splendidly. Their devotion to the athletes in orange and blue was as good as the teams’ performances. Keeping the school informed was the main task of the Hawk’s Quill staff, who worked diligently to publish a great paper, under the direction of Dave Irvin, editor. The life of the 1972 yearbook started when annual members helped in the selection of the theme. Reality was chosen hoping to show the life a 1972 student at Cooper experiences. A few of the members attended workshops throughout the year hoping to gain knowledge in yearbooking. With this knowledge and many hours working during vacations, the 1972 yearbook was prepared for publication. The famous Cooper bands once again were a credit to the school as shown through their devotion and the many awards attained throughout the year. Under the direction of Mr. Kloos they once again were the best in the state. The 1971-72 choirs directed by Mr. Wildung and Mr. Temple spent many hours in preparation for the annual Christmas Concert. The concert was held December 15, with many community residents and alumni being invited. The groups performed sacred and secular music appropriate for the Christmas season. After the concert was given, a reception for the alumni was held in the cafeteria. Later, instead of the annual Lake Conference Vocal Festival, the choirs from District 281 High schools performed an oratoria at Armstrong. 100 As its ultimate goal of promoting fellowship in a well-rounded individual, Y-teens conducted programs on several levels — those of service, religion, recreation, and personal development. In addition to sponsoring the annual Jack of Hearts festivities, Y-teens is a Christian organization working to help the community. Each chapter of the club, led by their president, engaged in a special service project. Promoting better relationships between countries, AFS sponsors an exchange of students from various nations. This year Paulo Faria represented his country, Brazil, at Cooper. To raise money for future exchange students, AFS sold orange and blue pens decorated with our 1971 football schedule. With a smile and a helping hand, G.U.S. began the 1971-72 year under the direction of Pres. Sue Leszko. By opening the club to all Cooper girls who wished to participate in their activities — G.U.S. became a friend to each Cooper girl. The Key Club gave pumpkins to the students of Highview for Halloween. They also gave a Christmas Party and have been involved in the weekly Pal’s program. National Honor Society was made up of those individuals whose personality, grades, and personal involvement in school activities met the standards set up by the organization. Membership in this club is a credit to any student who attains it and is sure to be an advantage in later years. This year those students who wish to do so may attend the trip to Washington during spring vacation. At minimal costs this trip furthers their education and is a time of fun. Providing an opportunity for students to test their mental strategy, the chess club, under supervision of Mr. C. Anderson, holds matches within our school to build skill for official tournaments. A little appreciated group of students at Cooper are those in Debate and Declam. Many long hours were spent in preparation on a variety of topics for speech contests and debate tournaments. These No. 1 talkers were coached by Mr. Weiss and Miss Heath. The language clubs combined into International club for the second straight year. Again this proved to be an asset to those foreign language students who wished to further their interests in specific subjects. French, German, and Spanish were the three languages contained in International club. A.V. is an important jervice group belonging to Cooper. Guided by Mr. Kane, this department sets up equipment and prepares the many aids required for class presentations. These volunteers only gain a personal reward for the vital services performed for teacher and students. An organization in which to express yourself as an individual is our highly talented Art club. Among many activities, led by Mr. Chagnon, was the construction and painting of a large mural to greatly enhance our cafeteria and just generally keeping the first floor circle lively and interesting. Aquettes have been going thru Monday night practices in preparation for their spring show with the theme of “Disney on Parade.” 101 102 NjihmuI Honor the light of brilliance — for one nite TR: J. Under the direction of President Neil Franz, the Jr. Class Cabinet met weekly to plan and finance Prom. Money makers included a Battle of the Ages” basketball game, and the winter play. Summer Tree. Compiling many different ideas, the Class of ’73 prepared a float to convey the message of Jive the Hive. Their float took third place in the Homecoming parade competition, but Junior abilities were not limited to creativity only. Many received lead roles in Cooper’s musical. and many others captured smaller parts. The athletic-minded Juniors added their talents to the Hawk’s teams in every sport, and proved to be extremely valuable. Many were starters. and even more acquired letter jackets for their help. The Class of '73 added much enthusiasm and spirit to Cooper High in working diligently for the changes that needed to be made. With their help. 1971-1972 was truly a great year. The Class of 74 began their first year at Cooper by winning second place in the annual Homecoming parade contest. This being the first year that they could attend the Homecoming dance, their enthusiasm was as high as other Cooper students. Sophomores took part in many other school activities, also. The musical production of Fiddler on the Roof gave many sophomores an opportunity to participate, as a few landed important roles. Others with musical abilities took part in the great Cooper marching band, which presented a final concert using the music played at all the football games. Sports proved to be another interest for many sophomores this year, and many proved to be valuable assets to the school teams. Cooper can look forward to having many great teams in future years with these sophomores playing. The Snow Week dance was tri-school this year, and many sophomores were able to see and visit with old friends from their previous school years. In proving themselves willing to work alongside the rest of Cooper's students, the Class of ’74 proved to be a great asset to our school this year in working to build a better Cooper High School. IJ6 - copy As the year “71” began at Cooper, it began much like the previous year, with renewed enthusiasm, new sophomores, new faculty, and extra students. Specifically the extras were Robbinsdaie 8th graders who spent their year at Cooper while their building was being remodeled. A new happening at Cooper this year was the “Cooper Community Coffee Cadre. These coffee parties attended by a pair of faculty and interested parents. were designed to improve the relationship between home and school. A new innovation in independent study was the “mini course. These classes were taught by a willing faculty member and attended by interested students on unscheduled mods. A few of the mini courses offered were Speed Reading, Macrame. and the Occult. While these were being studied on unscheduled mods, on scheduled mods the Senior Social team was stressing the idea of community involvement, while the Humanities students tried to answer the question, What is Man? A new course. “Seminar in Experimental Psychology.” was oriented toward independent experimentation. The faculty not only participated in classroom activities, but came out beyond the call of duty for the “Battle of the Ages basketball game, a benefit for the Jr. Class Prom Committee. Woven into every class and event with much importance were the services of the secretaries, resource aids, library staff, and the audio visual department. Education is a varied mixture of intellectual foresight and finding one’s self. With the interweaving of ideas and opinions between the faculty and students, something to strive for. in both directions, was a better picture of Reality. The fall of 1969 and our sophomore year seemed like an eternity ago. and then suddenly like only a moment, as we, the Class of '12. realized that this was to be our finale. Our last year at Cooper Senior High. What the future held for us. few knew. But we were determined to make this the best year of our lives. We entered the now all too familiar halls in September, ready to begin again. And as we leave, we can safely say that 1971-1972 was a good year. Homecoming came before we realized it was here, and with it. all the agony of knowing that next year it would be we who returned. We worked to make it the most special of all Homecomings by first crowning Margo Olson as Queen, and Princesses Jane McDill, Connie Grady, Mary Gates, and Cindy Nelson. The theme of Jive the Hive rang in the air as we constructed our last float and took on the Edina Hornets. Although we lost, we were undefeated in spirits and spent the rest of the evening attending our last Homecoming dance. Christmas Week arrived all too soon for most of us. as we realized that next year many of us would be far from home and the white stuff we called snow. The Choir Concert left tears in our eyes, and we stared wistfully at the doors we “decked in honor of the season. Cheering us up. although. was Santa Claus Rob Wolak and his merry Ho-Ho-Ho. And then it was Snow Week. We honored King Jim Stager and Queen Jean Thureson by choosing them to serve, and shared our Snow Week dance with our old friends from Armstrong, who were celebrating their Snow Week at the same time. It was a great time to reminisce, and to see old friends. The guys got the goodies, for a change, in February, and Jack of Hearts took on a new meaning for many of us. Our favorites we picked as candidates, each of whom we knew would be fantastic in the role. The dance was a highlight of the year, and was anticipated by many of us. And so 1971-1972 went by — too slow as we awaited our entrance into the real world, and too fast as we wanted to hang on to our youth. Prom came, as did Spring, and our days were numbered. Within a short time we would be the alumni of Cooper. And with the problems of the world surrounding us, we held on to the hope that somehow, someday, we. the Class of ’72. would help to make a better world.
