Social Studies 30—I acuity As the 70’s began, a new school year began and so did the students and faculty of Cooper. It started out as every other year with much hope and expectations of the new year to come. The Cooper faculty met an interesting challenge with the new Armstrong High using the Cooper building. That meant double shift and a 7:05 homeroom. It was quite a new experience for everyone, getting up before the sun and going home for lunch. The faculty worked through many of the problems, to make the courses offered to the students much more interesting by adding many new and different ones. Some of the new courses offered were film study, psychology, family living, auto mechanics, advanced composition and minority history to name only a few. These courses were offered on a semester basis so students and faculty would have a change in the middle of the year. Much of the faculty thinks the courses on a semester basis are a good idea, even though there are always a few problems to smooth out. Principal Kemppainen realized that more than anyone. His was the job of scheduling. The Senior Social team stressed the idea of experience. What is man?” was the basic theme for the humanities’ students. Industrial arts is mainly male-dominated, but the females are moving in slowly but surely. The guys tested their ability down in the home ec labs, baking little goodies for their own satisfaction. Two different levels of chemistry were offered for the first time; one for those college bound and the other for the general interest. Miss Ferris on the Junior Social team presented The World Today.” Faculty The teachers on one “in-service” day this year visited schools throughout the Metropolitan area. The students meanwhile had only a half day of school. These are only a few of the schools visited: St. Paul Johnson, Anoka, Coon Rapids, and North. The purpose of this in-service was to give the teachers ideas on ways to improve their classes and methods of teaching. There were really some basketball games the faculty played this year. The first team they played was the internationally known Harlem Diplomats. This proved to be fun for everyone. Our poor faculty lost an exciting and different game, but it certainly was an experience. The second game was the Ted Leuer Benefit game. Our faculty took on Armstrong's. They lost that in the last few seconds. Well, one team can’t win them all, can they? The winning or losing wasn’t the issue in this game, though. The faculty also played another AFS benefit game. Cooper’s Key Club sponsored a Faculty Appreciation Day. All the faculty members received a carnation. Signs were hung around the school to pat the teachers on the back” for all of their hard work. Free coffee was also provided by Key Club in the teachers’ lounge to help relieve themselves of all of their frustrations of everyday classes. This was one of Cooper’s first, and it will continue throughout the years. The school year has finally come to an end and both the students and faculty are somewhat happy. The faculty experienced a new, different, and challenging year this year and the next year may be more settled. The faculty, administration, school board, and students all strove together to make this past year at Cooper as good as possible. faculty copy—31 32 Organizations Editor-David Peugh Assistant Editor - Paul Duxbury 33 Concert Choir (Front row) F. GUS, besides helping at Highview, showed interest in the mental patients at Cambridge State Hospital. They gave a Christmas party for the people there and in the future plan on adopting an orphan. Y-teens again sponsored Jack of Hearts. Each chapter chose one candidate and worked on a different area of the dance. Their impressive induction and Thanksgiving service showed plainly the devotion of a Y-teener gives of herself. Pep Club started out their year with the annual initiation of new Pep Club Members. Pin curls, red lipstick, and white anklets singled out these initiates from the crowd, as did their unusual antics in the halls. The fun and spirit contained in every Pep Club girl is evident in their Pep fest skits, ticket-selling, buttonselling, and attendance at athletic events. The essence of a meaningful and fulfilling life lies in involvement. To be involved is to give of yourself, and giving is a joy to any who indulge. The opportunities for involvement at Cooper Senior High School are immense and widely varied; and it is possible for each and every student to give of himself, and become involved. The theme of Bridges was chosen by the editor and staff of this yearbook. Though the theme was carried out in the literal sense, the larger portions of the introductions and student life were devoted to the more abstract meaning of a bridge. Though most don’t realize it, the yearbook is a lot of hard work and Friday evenings spent trying to make the story of the students’ high school years more memorable. Cooperettes, captained by Jeanne Blake, entertained Cooper students during football and basketball halftimes. “Winter Wonderland” and “Hey Big Spender!” were two of the numbers performed by the girls. Miss Dubbe advised the Cooperettes again this year. AFS again sponsored two Foreign Exchange Students, Roger Cortes and Helen Zopoglou. To raise money for future such students, AFS engaged the services of the Harlem Diplomats in a benefit against our own Cooper faculty. Our fantastic Cooper band endowed us with several titles and trophies this year. Among them the District 5M Lions Competition, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and WCCO radio band of the week. 70—Or anizations Copy Organizational Involvement Fosters Understanding With the addition of soccer, the time cheerleaders devoted to our many fantastic teams was increased greatly. They supplied the support so needed by our athletes in orange and blue. The language clubs combined this year to form the “International Club.” The French section of it rehearsed and gave the play “Jack and the Beanstalk,” all in French. One aspect of Student Council is giving. Santa Anonymous again, bought lots of presents for under-privileged children. About $500 worth of gifts were involved. One organization to be commended at CHS is Key Club. Their continued interest in and service to Highview School is an asset to the reputation of Cooper students. Key Clubbers sold “insurance policies” to people who anticipated damage to their yards on Halloween and dutifully cleaned up any “accidents”. All of these organizations are necessary to the growth of each student of Cooper Senior High School, as the seniors leave behind them the memories only a high school such as ours can give. The juniors and sophomores accordingly become one step closer to the day that they, too, leave good old Cooper behind them. With slow starts in such sports as football, basketball, and soccer, the determination, skill, and fortitude of the Hawks began to show through. Many victories in gymnastics and swimming were obtained during the winter season. The 1970-71 football season began with some depressing losses against Robbinsdale and Armstrong; however, the Edina game lifted everyone’s spirit as we came close to beating the Hornets. Despite the disappointing season the gridders managed to place two men, Capt. Jim Spencer and Jr. Brian Wenz, on the all-conference team. Among these honors Spencer was also elected the most valuable player. The captains for next year’s team are Pat Brown. Jim Peterson and Mick Spring. Cooper’s sophomore team duplicated the record of last year by completing the season with six wins and two losses. Much of their victories were due to a strong team effort and spirit. Their coaches feel that many of the sophomore players will make a strong contribution to future varsity squads. As it was foretold due to the school split, a period of building for the Cooper football team was needed. A promising future is indicated by the strong sophs. 100—Athletic Copy SPORTQ Althougn the Cooper Cross Country team got off to a slow start they began gathering momentum with the Robbinsdale Invitational. Striving to place high in the next two invitationals, the distance men reached the turning point of the season with their good starters in the District 18 meet. While they proved mediocre in the dual meets, they showed greater ability in the triangular meet. The Cooper Soccer team, posting a 0-10 record, began a year of building a team. Capt. John (Bench) Wander receiving all conference honors as goalie, helped start off a new conference game at Cooper. John also was considered the most valuable player. Prospects for next year’s team look good with many returning sophomores and junior lettermen. The Captains for next year’s team will be Carl Neuburger and Chuck Smida. According to Coach Boyt, “With a great deal of room for improvement the team could have a very rewarding second season.” The Hawk cagers had a year of rebuilding similar to that of the football and cross country teams. Coach Whitey Johnson looked at the season as a year in which the team had to prove itself in the last seconds of play. Jim Spencer, Jim Nelson, Steve Horgan, Steve Hyser and 5 5 sophomore Ed Iskierka make up the starting line-up for Cooper. The B-squad had an exceptionally good year in that they had a good win-loss record. The outlook for next year is good from the returning lettermen and B-squad. This year’s hockey team finished with a 4-8-1 record. The sophomore team did remarkably well. Captains Jeff Wasnick and Steve Root along with Greg Gardner and Chuck Fern led the team through the season. Sophomore Steve Hatcher’s strong and consistent goal tending helped the team considerably. With nearly all the varsity team returning Coach Hammer expects a very good season next year. This year’s top scorer was Jeff Wasnick with twelve goals. 1970-71 was the first year Cooper had a skiing team. Even though they had two new coaches, Darrell Erickson from Plymouth and Bob Lindesmith from Sandburg they did very well. The captains were Bruce Rudolf for jumping, Craig Momn-son for slalom and Tom Erickson for cross country. The team finished with a conference record of 4-8. In the District 18 meet Cooper finished tenth. Nine Cooper skiers qualified for the State meet. Jumpers Bruce Rudolf, Bob Huston and Greg Burns went to State. Slalom representatives were Craig Momnson, Brad Swanson, and Doug Holston. Cross Country sent Tom Erickson, Steve Pitman, and Neil Franz to the State Meet. Through consistent playing Cooper placed in State. With all skiers, except five, returning next year, Coach Erickson looks forward to an excellent season. The swimming team under the direction of a new coach, Al Goodwin, completed one of its best seasons ever. With a record of 8 wins and 3 losses the swimmers came within two one point losses of being Lake Conference champions. After the completion of their dual meet season the Hawk tankmen were found to be rated fifth in the state. According to coach Goodwin they’re looking forward to their district and state competition. Senior Capt. Mike Fallon along with seniors Ron Steinert, Shawn McKinley and Mike Webinger all set varsity records in their respective events. Returning varsity record-breakers Dave Peugh, Kimm Julian, Mark Fallon, Paul Duxbury and freshman Mark Adamson look forward to swimming their best year ever. The 1970 State Champion Gymnastics team came back this year strong to protect their crown. Co-Captains Gary Berquist and Lee Pederson led the team to a highly successful dual meet season. With strong sophomore depth and a new coach the team repeated as state champs. The Cooper Wrestling team proved to have the least appealing season of its seven year existence. They finished fourth in the Lake Conference and fifth in District 18 Competition. Making it to Regions were Co-Captain Dennis DeBruyn, Mike Christianson, Carl Neu-buger and Kyle Thompson. Coaches Darrel Sohn and John Tobin are looking forward to next year having eight returning letttemen and another go at the conference title. Huslcal—121 STUDENT LIFE Those were the days. The years 1970-71 were the years of Vietnam, space-exploration, Love Story, oil slicks, earthquakes, and a winless football team. For Cooper students, there were classes at 7:00 in the morning. The changing of the guard occurred between 12 and 1 a’clock and the Falcons held the fort down ’til 6 o’clock. The Falcons went home at Thanksgiving and CHS returned to a strangely quiet building, as a small piece of the heart of each student left with the Armstrong kids. Homecoming 1970 began with the crowning of Barb Klatke as the Cooper High School Homecoming Queen. But it really began many months before with five committees slaving away to make the last seniors’ Homecoming a success. Out of 12 semi-finalists for Queen, Jeanne Blake, Sue Maund, Nancy Varner, Roberta Weimer, and Barb were selected as the finalists. The excitement built to a climax as Barb was presented as the new Queen, crowned by Mary Kay Sever, the 1969 Queen, and took the throne to begin her reign. In the following parade, the Junior Class float was judged to be the best for the second year in a row. And so, another tradition is begun for dear old CHS. Traditions come and go, but most are here to stay, both in the literal sense and in the memories of each Cooper graduate. One tradition was broken, however as the Cooper football team tied Minnetonka in the Homecoming game. Christmas week, the last for the class of ’71, the first for the class of ’73 was observed during the week of December 14-18. The Special Projects Committee conducted the week of spirit and fun. Each day was different. Monday being “Mistletoe Kiss and Go.” Mick Bushey, senior, evidently uses the right mouthwash, as he collected the most kisses that day! Tuesday was “Deck the Teach and Door Galore” day. Needless to say, many “angelic” professors taught on Tuesday. Wednesday became “Deck the Bod” Day for the students of CHS. On Thursday, kids gathered at Theodore Wirth Park for an evening of tobogganing. And on Friday, Good old Santa “Skip” Claus occupied the foyer, along with Mrs. “Pam” Claus, and elves Jim and Margo. 122—Student IHe copy The Annual Guys Go Free dance was held on December 4. The theme this year was “Kissing Cousins”. Couples enjoyed themselves as they swung their partner around the room. The Snow Week dance was a climax for the Snow Week activities being held the week of January 11-15. Monday morning Don Frayseth and Dee Dee Sharpe were crowned and began their reign as King and Queen. Ski sweaters were worn on Monday to start the week off with snow spirit. On Tuesday the classes participated in a snowball eating contest. The Hawks showed their artistic ability on Thursday by sculpturing snow. Orange and Blue were worn on Friday to end a spirited week. The Cooper Drama Department presented three plays during the year of 1970-71. “Man of La Mancha” was the major production this year. Don Quixote, played by Kimm Julian, roamed the country in search of the impossible dream. Mr. John Cunningham served as the director and manager of the musical production while Mr. Wildung served as the musical director. The final result of months of preparation and anticipation were viewed by the audiences on November 12-14 and 19-21. The 1970-71 one-act contest play was “Stars and Stripes”. This production was of a deserter during the World War II and his public execution. Mr. Cunningham served as director of this poduc-tion, also. “Teahouse of the August Moon” was chosen by Mr. Ludwig as the winter play. Captain Frisbee went to Okinawa to teach the Okinawans democracy. The junior class sponsored the play. Ail proceeds went towards Prom. Mr. Phillips was tech director for all three plays. Juniors—147 Involvement — Key to Quccess In late November officers for the Junior Class Cabinet were chosen. All the energies of the Class of “72'’ were turned toward raising money for the upcoming Prom. Various money-making projects helped reach their goal. Of these projects the most helpful were the piles of paper flowers, and homeroom-sponsored bake sales. The winter play, “Teahouse of the August Moon,” was sponsored by the Junior Class. This was their largest source of revenue for the Prom. Thirty-three juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. The ceremony was on the evening of Thursday, December 10. Carnations were distributed to the new members by the old members. The carnations symbolized honor achievement. The inductees were escorted on stage by the old members, where they were introduced to the audience. Before the oath was said candles were lit. A reception was held for the members and their parents after the ceremony. The skillful talents of the class of “72“ were utilized during the weeks prior to Homecoming. Dedicated juniors spent hours in Analyn Am-born’s garage making an artistic float for the Homecoming parade. Cutting tissue paper, stuffing, and getting raw knuckles were all part of the job. The reward for working hard was first prize in the Homecoming parade competition. This established a two-year tradition for the juniors. An integral part of the educational process is involvement. On December 27 the Cooper faculty challenged the Armstrong fac-utly in a basketball game. This game was a benefit for Ted Leuer after a freak accident on December 9 caused him to lose both legs. The game was very well attended. The juniors and sophomores came to the benefit to convey their deepest sympathy to Ted, even though many did not know him. All proceeds went to the Ted Leuer fund. Leaders of the Sophomore Class were chosen late in December. The election of the Cabinet united the Class of “73”. Among many of its tasks is the selection of their class rings. After many long hours of work, cutting tissue paper, and stuffing a gigantic hawk the sophomores entered their artistic float. Their reward for their time and effort was a second place prize. The revenue earned to build the float was contributed by all sophomore homerooms. Athletically-oriented girls who showed an interest in organized sports were initiated into GAA in October. The requirements for initiation were set up by old members, and were hesitantly carried out by the initiates. The members can now work toward their stripes, pins, letters, and numerals. After earning fifty points for Pep Club, sophomores have the chance to purchase their sweaters. This and the initiation, in the early part of their junior year, make the girls official members of Pep Club. ________________ 148—Copy Seniors Cross Bridge Into Future Boy. these books are heavy and cumbersome. Winders Vince John Zirbes We came, We did. We left. We came with sleep still in our eyes. It was 6:30 a.m. and we were seniors! We were the leaders. Members of our class would be honored by being named to the royal courts of Homecoming and Snow Week. The name, senior, which we had acquired seemed to open the door to many things. Semester courses, new teachers, and forty cent lunches were added. Girls wearing jeans and guys with long hair showed signs of an abolished dress code. A 7:00 to 12:00 day for one quarter was loved by all. Ordering announcements, exchanging graduation pictures, and being measured for caps and gowns kept us busy. We experienced it all and took advantage of every opportunity open to us. It was our year! ____ Homecoming came on October 21. Next year we would be alumni, looking on but not participating. The kids we had met and grown with in tenth grade were pow gone. Their new home, Armstrong, wasn’t built yet so we shared. Then in November they left and overnight we became rivals. We learned a little about life in those months. Quite a little! Christmas came and filled us with sentimental thoughts. We heard and participated in our last Christmas concert, had our last Christmas Week. No more kiss and go! Our Santa. Skip Miller, delighted us with his “Ho-Ho-Ho” assisted by his jolly wi e, Pam Olson. We wanted our last Christmas Vacation to be exciting but found ourselves sleeping it away. 174—Senior Copy Along with Minnesota winter comes CHS Snow Week. We started the week out right by crowning Queen Dee Dee Sharpe and King Don Fray-seth. (Don lost a little rose on that). The seniors, of course, won the snow ball fight. The Snow Week Dance topped off the week and a real live snowmobile was given away. The first semi-formal dance, Jack of Hearts, was held in February. The nine candidates, Jim Nelson, Jim Le-Cuyer, Denny De Bruyn, Mike Christenson, Jerry Zaic, Alvin Daisy, Gary Smith, Roger Cortes, and Kimm Julian were honored by being chosen. Senior girls anticipated going to the dance to see who their new Jack of Hearts would be. Snow melted. Easter, Senior Skip Day, baseball, track, tennis, and Prom occupied our time. With the warm breezes blowing through the open windows, senioritis’ caught us all. Our studies were often interrupted by thoughts of college, a job, and vacations. The biggest dream of all was GRADUATION. We were eager to get into the big world, but yet we didn’t want to lose the close bonds we had at CHS. Many world problems were facing us and soon we would be of age to help solve them. The Vietnam war, pollution, racial prejudice, politics and more. Maybe we would be the generation to solve them. Who knows? One thing we did know. We were the class of 71. Senior Copy—175 A AANERUD DEBRA—Diamond Club 11. 12 ADAMS CHERYL—A A A 10. 11; Gymnastics 10. 11. The class was presented to the audience by Junior Class President, Jim Stager, and Vice President Camille Steen. Following the invocation by Pastor Davis, Jeanne Blake, Senior Class President, gave the Welcoming speech. After Mr. Ulrich presented the school board, Dr. Joselyn and Mrs. Silberman awarded the diplomas. Many fond memories passed on to thoughts of the coming years as diplomas were presented. Now those seniors are alumni; each going his separate way. Friendship throughout the years will be treasured and new ones sought after, but the memories of their high school years will never totally be forgotten. From the theme, “We’ve Only Just Begun,” Cooper’s prom blossomed into a gay success at the Lafayette Club on Lake Minnetonka. Once inside couples wandered through the expanses of the building and later danced to the music of The Dick Whitbeck Orchestra. For many part of the evening was spent taking pictures to be cherished forever. Each event of the evening seemed to add to a collection of memories that will be fondly remembered. The day after the regal affair couples enjoyed many hours at Taylor’s Falls for a day of relaxed fun. The memories of a highly successful prom will be cherished until next year, when once again it will be time to build on old traditions and move ahead in setting new ones. A rumble of thunder and a flash of lightning announced the arrival of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The dramatization was on the life of Anne Frank, a young girl, during World War II. It reminds us that the Nazis murdered not only lives but also life. They murdered a radiant part of the future. However through every line of the play shines the spirit of Anne Frank. The joy, love, and other human traits expressed by the eight p'eople show the audience the real worth of all humans. The audience identifies with Mary Gates as Anne Frank, and Paul Dennler as Peter Van Daan which makes the end such a shocking experience. They shared the tragic loss of real humans and not mere facts and figures. The fact that “The Diary of Anne Frank” was not an entirely depressing play added to the success of the play. 199
