Always you have put your shoulders to the wheel to help us achieve both our educational and common goals. There were times when we felt low in spirit and you lifted us. The example that you set in the classroom, and your qualities of spirit and mind will always be an inspiration to us . We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and sixty six, wish to immortalize the years that we ' ve shared with you, and to say thanks for all that you have done. From time to time during the past three years, I have enjoyed the privilege of having many talks with you. I hope that I have impressed upon you my for- mula for success which is hard work and good work”. A man who does no more than he is forced to do, or does as little as he can be paid to do, is an idle man. You have sought after and have been provided with the tools of learning and the inspiration to forge a better way of life for yourself and for others. There is no adequate method, it seems, of really measuring the influence of this school on your future. Suffice it to say that our alumni have been in the forefront in leading the continued march for a higher level of intellectual, economic, and spiritual attainment. In practically every phase of life there are Smithites whose lamps were lit here. You face a period of great tension, difficulty, and danger for our country, our freedom, and our civilization. I challenge you to face it with the firm re- solution that our democracy, our religion, and our way of life can never be destroyed except by our neglect and indifference. We, here at Smith, shall continue in your service with unabated vigor in the years to come. The resources of my office are always at your disposal. Yours is a splendid opportunity to live a contributory life. I am confident that you will. Mrs. A. Woullard Secretary Mrs. M. H. Johnson Bookkeeper Miss C. L. Thompson Guidance Counselor Mr. R. C. For three years we strived for excellence For three years you gave your all- Now, that the future is in our hands These lessons we recall. As we broaden our horizons And go on to higher heights With the standards of dignity and grace We ' ll run, we ' ll win, we ' ll fight- We ' re ready for the race. And so, Smith high, our journey begins Into the mainstream of life With the courage and hope that make manl We ' 11 find our island and light the bes m of excellence. Cheryle Smith ISLANDS OF EXCELLENCE As the good ship of fortune docks at the port of opportu- nity--We gather better job opportunities and more voca- tional training to start our journey. Our wind tossed vessel travels over the stormy seas, we reach the port of Humanity. Here we find avenues of love, justice, and decency. Our crew, the class of 1966, learns that man is dependent on man and that man belongs to man. With these virtues in mind, we put our fate in the wind and sail on to our Islands of Excellence. 15 Cheryle Smith Gwendolyn McRae Gloria Gairy Secretary Thomas Gavin Vice-President Patricia Pope Executive Secretary Chylow Moore Editor Keith Graves Co-Editor 16 17 BLUE, ELIZABETH 18 BUTLER, JAMES CARVER, KENNETH 21 DAVIS, DOROTHY FREEMAN, BERKLEY FERGUSON, GERALDINE FREEMAN, WILLIAM FOSTER, FRED FOY, DELORES FOUSHEE, REGINALD FEEMSTER, CLEVELAND FARRINGTON, ZOAN 24 HENLEY, RAYMOND JONES, EVELYN 29 MARTIN, KISSEL 30 McEACHERN, BETTY McLAURIN, HELEN McLEAN, JOHN McLaughlin, janie McGILDREY, SHIRLEY McKEITHAN, DORIS McMillan, Charles McNEIL, FRANK McNEIL, RONALD PIERCE, MARILYN PLUMMER, RUSSELL SUTTON, NORA ROSEBOROUGH, JAMES SINGLETARY, MARY WILLIAMS, HELEN LEAK, DAVID McMillan, lena WILLIAMS, ALEXANDER McDonald, Barbara WILLIAMS, CHARLES WILLIS, ARCHIE 44 45 BEST DRESSED MOST ALL-ROUND Brenda Currie Elmer Simmons MOST STUDIOUS MOST INTELLECTUAL BEST LEADERS MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Carolita Smith Thomas Gavin MOST ATTRACTIVE - HANDSOME WITTIEST MOST TALENTED Edwenia Farmer Thomas Gavin jmmm i m Evelyn Jones Chylow Moore Kaye Frances King Juan Hall 46 BEST DANCERS MOST POPULAR Carolita Smith Ronald Simms Carolita Smith Elmer Simmons MOST ATHLETIC MOST PHOTOGENIC Edwena Farmer WiUie Simon Carolita Smith Oscar Polite Jacquelyn Hollingsworth Johnny Baldwin 47 48 Gloria Allen Mack Allen Robert Armstrong Bur land Baker Raecene Baldwin David Best Andrea Bethea Lacy Bethune Diedre Blackwell James Blue Sylvester Blue Margaret Bradley Leona Breece Barbara Brewington DeVon Brewington Cynthia Bridgers Betty Bronson Gloria Brooks Len Brown Carol Bryant Belinda Bryant. At the beginning of the season, the Bulls had an easy win over their oppo- nents. Week after week, teams fell short of defeating the Golden Bulls. After the Bulls surpassed their predicted season mark, they were competing with the top rated teams in the league. Suffering only one loss entering the Eliza- beth City game, the Bulls were on their last leg for a possible Eastern Cham- pionship. Fighting to the end, the Bulls couldn ' t stay out front in order to end the game victoriously. With two games left and one of those being Homecoming, the Bulls went on to prove themselves one of the top teams in the State. Her attendants are: Gloria Gairy, of 12-1, and Sandra Joyce Purdie, of 12-3. The week ' s festivities included: Clash Day, Dress Up Day, Blue and Gold Day, the Pre- Homecoming Dance, and the Homecoming Game. Uheatre in (ioucalion Each year Theatre in Education sponsors a tour throughout North Carolina high schools presenting professional actors in absorbing scenes from famous plays by Shakespeare. During the week of their visit to E. E. Smith, this creative exhibit was displayed in the lobby featuring major works by Shakespeare. Below are the actors viewing the exhibit. 85 The Smithespians presented two exciting plays this year. Purlie Victorious by Ossie Davis was highly acknowledged by the community. Leading characters were Kenneth Carver, Delois Foy, Howard Jenkins, Sylvester Reeder and LaMaurice Hunter. The Festival presenta- tion Twelve Pound Look was highly recognized in the Regional and State Festivals. Stars of the presentation were Linda Kerr and Kenneth Carver with LaMaurice Hunter and Keith Graves sharing significant roles. 86 87 trombone The Smithsonian Choir rendered exceptional performances this year, under the new director, Mr. Clinton G. Wilson. Their major performances included: Handel ' s Messiah, a joint concertwith the J. W. Ligon HighSchool choir, God ' s Trombone by James Weldon Johnson, the spring concert, and the district and state festival performances. 88 SMITH TEACHER HONORED For a number of years the Homemaking Department at E. E. Smith Senior High School has grown and prospered under the direction of Miss C. L. Hol- den. Because of her diligent and devoted service, and her vivid portrayal of the Standards and ideals set forth by the Future Homemakers of America, the members of this school chose to name the organization the CLEMENTINE L. HOLDEN CHAPTER OF THE FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA. Miss Holden, pleasantly surprised, faced a happy and appreciative audience as she accepted a plaque from Cheryle Smith on behalf of the Clementine L. Holden Chapter of the Future Home- makers of America. The plaque read in part: For untiring service in helping to improve in- dividual, personal, family, and community living.” Miss Holden is a native of Raleigh, N. C. She received the B. S. and M. S. degrees from Shaw University and New York University respectively. She is a valued advisor on many projects and activities of the school and community. Membership in professional organizations include the following: American Home Economics Association, Home Economics Division of the N. E. A., American Vocational Association, and the North Carolina Home Economics Association. Miss Holden has also served as Chairman of Home Economics Teachers. An effective worker, a respected educational leader, an unassuming but appreciative human being, Clementine L. Holden has made significant contributions to education. 89 90 91 Directory LEMUEL ANDERSON 521 Eaton Street Activities: Track Glee Club Science Club CHARLES ARCHIE 912 Ellis Street Activities: EDWARD R. I would like to thank you for the trust that you placed in me as president of the senior class and for the fine cooperation that I received from each of you. As we look back over the past years, I am sure that we can be proud of our accomplishments and forever mindful of our failures. We have learned during these years that the need to strive for greater heights is the foundation upon which we shall build our Islands of Excellence.” Gwendolyn McRae, Now, fellow classmates, with heart heavy, but mind filled with treasured memories, I bid you farewell. President All Smithsonians have one great purpose, and that purpose is to capture the events and treasured moments that we will one day want to recall. When all members of this class, the Big 66, move away they will one day want to look back into the good ole days they had here. Recapturing will be no problem for they know these events will always be on file in the Smithsonian ' 66. Featured in this Smithsonian were Intramural activities, athletics, and special events, such as Career Day and College Day, and the ex- hibitions by NASA and North Carolina Natural Gas. These exhibitions show progress made throughout the years from the past to the present, and their hopes for even greater progress in the future years. E. E. Smith is progressing, for the sounds from its progress bell have been steadily ringing. Since the school years of 1964-66, the alumni has displayed great feats in placing Smith on the North Carolina and National scene. One of Smith ' s alumni, Deborah Wilkerson, Class of ' 65, became one of North Carolina’s and the nation ' s first Presidential Scholars; James Raye, Class of ' 64, became Smith ' s first Big Ten athlete and next year a potential starting quarter-back for the Michigan State Spartans. Stephen McCleod, Class of ' 65, this year became Duke University ' s first Negro fraternal pledgee; and our own chemistry teacher, Mr. Archie T. Clark, Class of ' 50, was named by the North Carolina Section of The American Chemical Society as North Caro- lina Science Teacher of the Year for the year 1964-65. Smith is now expanding its physical plant with additions of new and beautiful classrooms and other buildings. The hammeringand drilling and the persistent pounding have all been welcomed and described as sounds of progress. Then there is the Smithsonian itself. It too plays a vital role in the progress of E. E. Smith. With the development of new and better cameras and accessories, better layout designs and special photographic techniques, the Smithsonian will also be a part of this great progressive move. The Alumni and faculty, the Student body, expansion of the physical plant and publications - these are the reflections that toll the Smith bell and are responsible for THE SOUNDS OF PROGRESS ON OUR ISLAND OF EXCELLENCE Chylow Paul Moore Editor-In-Chief 1 10 1 12 cf () e 1 Love that man from TJarsitu! 114 BROADELL HOMES, INC.
