It makes us realize, that though these twelve years have been trying ones, this air ofpreeminence that we feel, sufficiently rewards for the hard work we have done. Since our first years in school we have dreamed of the time when we'd take the lead in school activities, when we'd be the upperclassmen--the Seniors. Our Parents and teachers have been our inspiration. They have guided us through the years and have looked forward to sharing this honor with us. It seems only proper that they should be able to do so. So, as we leave these walls, it is our hope that we have left behind, the memory of a class of truly dignified seniors. The Senior class of E. E. Smith Senior High School from the county of Cumberland, the city of Fayetteville, in the State of North Carolina, Presenting the 1961 edition of the SMITHSONIAN We are indeed proud to have achieved the honorship of SENIORITY and we now, in remembrance of our most cherish- able moments. It always makes a pleasant impression on us when we open again at these pages of the book of 8 goreworcf Time and circumstance, crisis and decision, failure and success, war and peace, cowardice and courage--these are the moldings of our lives. We wonder where and when each will be born into existence, but we cannot know these things so far beyond our limiting conceptions. To reminisce and recall the memories of past joys and sorrows are what makes life a thing of realizing what per- haps lies in future undertakings. The cream of our High School days is yet to be skimmed by the unseen fates that await us somewhere in the future. We know not how we shall be judged, but we have thrust forth our purest hand. As we finger the following pages, we see the moving forces that have made for a certain exactness in the pattern of our High School lives--bittersweet happiness of classwork, overwhelmed joy at the winning of football, basketball and baseball games, light and frivolous gaiety on an icy, snow filled campus or just a casual chit-chat at lunch time while watching Intramural activities. These little things, among countless others, are what we remember most from our High School days. my Contents 0 '5 g f .. . J lx al To you E.E.Smith may mean many different things, but the name is that of a very great educationer Dr.EzekielEzra Smith. In addition to his achievements in education he was also a preacher, a soldier, a businessman and a diplomat. Dr. Smith was born on May 23, 1852 to free parents in Duplin County, North Carolina. Among the many difficulties of his early childhood there were no schools for Negroes. Following the civil war the few schools in the South were opened to Negroes. Ezekiel worked and saved enough money to enter Shaw Collegiate Institute, now Shaw University, in Raleigh, as a work student. In 1878 Ezekiel Smith completed his formal education receiving an A. B. Degree. The following fall Dr. Smith was elected principal of a school in Goldsboro, North Caro- lina. Feeling his call to preaching Dr. Smith was ordered by the Baptist State Convention of which he later became president of until 1883. Dr. Smith was also a member of the Falt Carey Foreign Mission Committee and was moderative of the Union Association. In the military aspect of his life Dr. Smith was important in the organization of the Fourth Battalion of the North Carolina General and in the same year, 1880, he was ap- pointed a major. Dr. Smith was sent to Liberia as Minister Resident and Council General of the United States. He served this important post for two years, during which time he was almost sole responsible in the great improvement of relations between the United States and Liberia. Now a high school has the honor and distinction of the name of this great educator, Dr.EzekielEzra Smith. And now also we the students, teachers and associates who have any contact with the school have the burden of upholding its great name and tradition. 15 Ad m' 0 lnlsiration 'YO THE- CLASS OE' i96i'. y to extend my congr atu- ood wishes tor tutur e . All of thy wisdom we have stored in our minds And high character we've learned to attain. We'll share our faith with ev'ry troubled heart, So we shall not have lived in vain. Dear Smith High School, Dear Smith High School, Though now we part we'll ne'er forget That the time is now to fulfill each vow, For we may never pass this way again. Having hitched our wagon to a star, we as seniors have left behind a path of which we can be proud. When we first joined this constellation as freshmen on September 4, 1958, we were eager, immature and untried. Undaunted by this we mingled and become a part of the Smith family and made our place among the other students. We participated in every phase of Smith's program. No matter how high or far we go, we'll always remember that enchanting evening in Hawaii on May 13, 1960. Stardust fell lightly on that tropical isle as everyone stopped to sway to the sweet strains of Aloha , and drank tropical mist. One particularlybright star landed in the athletic galaxy. As one reminisces during this period one can see the cheering crowds in the stands as our team set a new record in high school basketball inthe state, as they excelled in football and in baseball. The Milky Way shiningbrightly in the heavens, marks our niche in academic achievement. With the intelligency, in- itiative, diligency, purposefulness, and know-how character- istic of the seniors of '61, we have become one bright and gleaming cynosure. Now, after 3,000 light years, we have come to the place where the white gleam of our bright star is cast . We are no longer infants--we are graduating seniors. With poise and dignity our star has ended one phase of our lives. On the threshold of a new star and of a new galaxy we now take our stand. With the inspiration, knowledge, and experience we have gained from this, our guiding star, we will venture into a new constellation leaving behind a trail of stardust and our deepest and most profound gratitude. 'Patricia Regis, Historian S3 Berthawmiams Casting GH Starlight.. In 1981 I parked my spacemobile on the asteroid of Gestetner. I saw my old classmates and conversed with all of them. I was quite surprised when Igot there and foimd out that Nannie Gerald was to be my Sociologist partner in the newly built Solar YWCA planned by William Moore and Caldwell Jackson. Marlyn Walker is the Physical Ed. Instructor there, and working with him is Howard Evans. Marlyn and Westra Johnson recently married. Westra is working in the Space Hospital as a Medical Technologist. Their wedding was a Reimion for the Class of 1961. The maid of honor was Mary McNeill, who is teaching Home Economics at the Moon High School, and the brides- maids were Patricia Regis, an English Instructor, Willeta Kennedy, a Physical Therapist, Judith Marshall, a Sociologist and Sarah McMillan a Nurse. The best man was Kenneth Smith a Psychiatrist. The ushers were James Raya Biology Instructor at the University of Venus, Cosmas Eaglin, Engineer, Leonard Sanders, Coach of Saturns, and Alexander Cole, star fullback of the Pluto Bears. The minister was Phillip Elliot, and the soloist Sylvia Pindle, who has a contract with Mercury Records. Atthe reception held in Jupiter Hall, I saw Carey Hughley who informed me he is now a football coach for the Neptune Rockets. William Monroe and Bertha Williams are now partners in a law firm. Bertha told me that Lewis Burton is working in the same building with them as a Business Administrator. William Bristow is now a Rocket Pilot. He brought Del Tricia Currie and Willie Mae Lewis, who are Social Workers to the wedding. After the reception, Ireturned to my star tent with my partner Nannie. She had been able to see some of the people I hadn't seen. Mona Boston isaResearch Chemist at the Venus Laboratory. We have several nurses at the Neptune Hospital, Elgene McLaurin, Margie Gerald, Maryanne Williams and Rubye Smith. Nannie informed me that Barbara Howell is now modeling for the House of Stars, where Joseph Walker is photog- rapher. Iran into Ernest McNeill while Iwas shopping on the moon, and he told me he is nowa Biologist at E. E. Smith Moon High School, where Dorothy Bullock and Linda Gillis are Commercial Ed. teachers. Arthur Davis is the Principal there, James McLean the Assistant Principal and Ann McMillan the Guidance Counselor. Youknow, I often wonder what my other classmates are doing on the moon, stars and other planets. I hope to meet them all at our Reimion in 1987 at the Uranus Auditorium. I have to go now, back to my work. I must prepare for my take off, and rocket Beyond the Star Kingdom. io-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-o -------------- Fire!!!
