E. Smith, for on that day the crass of '60 entered to begin its four years' journey. This great exodus was similar to that of a big, bustling h’arbor, where people were boarding ships for journeys all over the world, but on this day, Setpember 4, 1956, two-hundred and seventy two enthusiastic students boarded the liner--Reminiscene for the land of Realism. They began the voyage by adjusting to their new surroundings which was to be their home for the next four years. After adjustment, they began to explore and to take part in different activities aboard, such as singing in the glee club, participating in the dramatics club, the cheering squad, the band, and sports. Soon many formed the core of these organizations and were accredited as being outstanding. But life aboard was not all play and no work and soon many found it to be so. The price of wisdom is above rubies, Old Testa-ment Job xxviii, 18. On the third year of the voyage, this ship docked at an isle for an enchanting evening of gaiety, melodious music, and dancing. Many said afterward they could have danced all night. This event climaxed three year6 of sailing. The fourth year of the voyage was destined to be the most eventful. The passengers had awaited this year filled with anxiety, anticipation, and joyfulness for this year the voyage would be ended. Many said in their moments of reverie they could faintly hear strains of 'God of Our Father' which would greet them when the voyage was finally over. However, Fate had so ordained it, that many, who had embarked upon the voyage four years ago, had been caught up in the sands of time, so that not all remained. The Reminiscence made several more stops before reaching its destination. The last and most important stop came on June 1, 1960. Everyone disembarked and streamed toward the shore where each went his seperate ways: some to happiness, others to success and others..................... This is an authentic report written aboard the liner Reminiscence. Shady R. McBride, Historian nc’.. “ClimS Gvery Mountain Smith, though we're leaving, No more to share All the joys and sorrows, We whisper a prayer. Though we have mastered Ev’ry feat and woe, We will still go forward With thy light aglow. CHORUS A light that will shine As the love that you give, Every day of our lives For as long as we live. Barbara Alexander 1 a s s e m C I a s s S o n 9 The time has come when we must part From that unfaltering trust we hold in our hearts. Dear Smith, your love we'll always cherish For it will neither die nor perish. We have shared our sorrows and our joys yet--And together we solved the problems we met. With heavy hearts and tears of sadness We must depart from our years of gladness. We must face life's future whatever it may bring. And make the best everything. We must eat of the bitter, and eat of the sweet. Conquer the foes, which we must meet. We'll long remember you in all we do. To you, dear Smith, we promise to be true. We’ll fight as soldiers on the battle-field. We'll strive, seek and yet not yield. 'Till we see the face of the rising sun, 'Till we know our battle is won. We'll wave the banner o'er land and sea. Dear Smith, we know we'll never forget thee. 51 Elsie McDougald Class Prophecy The big day was finally here! Yes, just 4 hours and 45 minutes from now. June 12. 1985, is to be held the large ••reunion of the graduating class of 1960 of E. E. Smith Senior High School. Smith graduates of that class all over the world have made preparations to attend this great event. At the Laddie P. Bell Memorial Hospital in Washington, D. C. where Misses Elnita Cogdell and Betty Jackson are head nurses and I. Miss Eva McEachern, am surgical nurse, plans have been nude for substitutes who will take over while we are away. Everyone is excited, for this will indeed lie a memorable day for all of us. On my way to the airport. I wondered if the aims and ambitions of my fellow classmates had been accomplished. But, finally, the answers to the many questions that raced through my mind would soon be known, for I had now reached the airport. As 1 boarded my plane, I took a glance at the pilot, and though his face wore a mature and sophisticated look, 1 knew instantly who it was. Yes. you guessed it! Arthur Pindle. We talked for a while before the plane began to take its flight, and I learned from him that his high school pal. Kenneth Scott, was now a research chemist at Cape Canaveral. Pindle, of course, could not attend the reunion because of his job. but he sent his best regards. My flight to North Carolina was one full of reminlcing, wondering and impatient waiting. When my plane finally got there. I saw that things had really changed since I'd been away. As I walked down the street through the spring rain. I saw tall buildings where only small ones used to be. I approached the school--the place where our lives had been molded. Here it stood--unchanged, only a little older than I remembered. I walked slowly up the walk, and ascended the steps of the place to which I had come so many times. The familiar halls were quiet, and I was led to the auditorium. Though the auditorium was packed, there was another hour before we would be welcomed by the principal of E. E. Smith Senior High School, now Me. Joseph David Daniels. We were introduced to a lady whom he called the Greatest History Teacher in North Carolina, and I knew then that it could be no one else but Shady McBride. Our attention was turned to the door where in came Miss Elsie McDougald and Mr. Ray Coleman who had T V Shows of their own in Hollywood. California. I learned by them that we were to be entertained with musical selections by Miss Barbara Alexander who was a partner to Johnny Nash on Broadway. Miss Harriett McAlister, one of the greatest cosmetologists out west, entered the auditorium with Miss Resna Allen, who was now a noted psychiatric social worker in the West Indies. It was really a pleasure to see these old faces again. We sat there for awhile, everybody talking together about old times when five distinguished ladies walked in. They were Misses Wiola Chapman. Wilma Highsmith. Carolyn Gilbert. and Jane Hatterser. who were all teachers at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. It was now time for the reunion program to begin. Dr. J. D. Daniels welcome was one that made us all feel that we really were welcomed back to our old Alma Mater . Among those who entertained us were the Four Lads : James Williams, Odell Currie. Willie Holmes and James Brown---One of the most popular singing groups since the • Drifters 25 years ago. Miss Jacquelyn Thorne. America's greatest female doctor and Miss Louetta Brown, a laboratory technician at Columbia University were guest speakers. We were given music by the North Carolina College Choir, whichwasunder the direction of Miss Mary Brewington. But to my surprise. Miss Joanne McLaurin. now singing alto with the Norman Noboff choir, sang a wonderful solo. Among others present were Dr. Thomas McLaurin. now President of Yale University and Professor Charles McMillan, who is now a French teacher at Morehouse College. Miss Carolyn Singletary and Mr. Douglas Gilmore are also French instructors, but are at Spivey University . Incidently. Charles Patterson, a photographer for the R. Thomas Observer (founded by Robert Thomas) was taking pictures of all of the people who were present. After the main features were over, we were taken to the cafeteria where we were fed a wonderful dinner, served by Misses Doris Fuller, chief cook, and Brenda Yarboro. her assistant. This wonderful day came to an end and we looked at this place to which we came -- the place which had held our laughing, our growing and our loving. We arc now sad. for we realize that the echoes of our laughter, our heartaches, and our love have died with our leaving. Ana only we know now. how important it all was to us then............French. English, physics. But then we had to depart, for we all have businesses of our own. The main objective of the Student Council has been to serve the student body. In our democratic society the government of the people has always worked toward serving the people. The objectives which were outlined by the Student Council for the year 1959-60 have been thoroughly exercised. I take great pleasure in saying that this organization has truly been very effective. The guidance rendered to us by Miss C. L. Thompson really inspired us to rise to the heights that we have accomplished. We wish to extend heartiest thanks to Miss Thompson. In conclusion. I advocate that if the future Student Council will acquire the confidence and support of the student body, this organization will reach higher heights and uphold the standards of this great organization. Their success is attributed to the very capable leadership of Coaches D. T. Carter and D. S. Kelly. The Bulls co-operated whole-heartedly with their co-captains William Shipman, John Mebane, and Connie Boykins. The other senior players were William Council, William Jones. Montague Thompson, Malcolm Foy, James Brown, David Daniels, Lawrence Shipman. Robert Thomas, and James Williams. William Shipman and Connie Boykins are to be especially commended for securing the honor of being selected as players in the Shrine Bowl game. William Shipman was again outstanding by being selected All-State End. Our Qolden “Bulls” Basefia!! The Bulls put their best foot forward this year, beginning their season with a 7-0 record. They are again putting in their bid for the State Crown, as in previous years. This year, Robert Drake, the only senior on the team and whose batting average is 599. has truly led them to victory. Although our varsity exemplified the highest of school spirit, in most cases they were defeated. Even then, though, their performance was very good. The outstanding senior players were Connie B. Boykins, Charles Patterson, and William (Cannon) Shipman (also selected to the All-State).
