Miller FROM THE CLASS of '58 We, the class of 1958, will remember these years spent here at Smith always. They, now that we look back, seem to have gone too fast. We d r e am ed of how happy we would be when graduation came. Now that it is here we look upon it with mixed emotions. We are eager to get out into the world and all its new experiences, Yet we grow s ad when we look back to our life here. We shall miss the joy of the first day of school, the excitement of seeing the Bulls crush their opponents, and most of all the association with our friends whom we soon must leave. As time goes by as memories grow dim, this book, these words, these pictures will become dearer to us. They will remind us of our dreams and ambitions of these days and inspire us to keep after our goals. THINGS WHICH WIlL LINGER ON THESE PICTURES T ,Administration T 1 S , jaw? Cloudless are the skies, The time seems a slave to our will, Endless tomorrows with happiness We fill. Journeying unfamiliar paths we'll travel free And find the sunny road to success. But never, never lonely shall we fare For you, Smith Hi, will be in our dreams everywhere, With heart strong for battle and determined to win, May we not weaken when the work begins, For only contentment fools find and keep But to him who succeeds the road is steep, The top is farther on the way And splendor is but a Sunbeam, soon to stray. Faithful to our work, respectful to our call, Arid seeing it isn't too easy not too small Each toil a benediction and for us the best We'll do it well and leave God the rest. 611155 Sang Our four years here is a precious thing That We'll rejoice in remembering, We've shared our joys and sorrows here, So it's hard to part from those who 've grown dear. Remember parents and teachers, too, That it's with your guidance we start anewg With courage, faith and the knowledge gained We can face life's problems and share its pains. This class of nineteen and fifty-eight Will long remember this wondrous dateg The hour draws near as the time flies past So with heavy hearts we depart at last. We leave undaunted and unafraid Of any future that lies ahead, We've come this far so we can't turn back, But, before we go, Smith you must know - You'll always be remembered. ALVIN HILL PRESIDENT In 1956, upon the request ot a friend, I attended the state Student Council Convention at Charlotte, N. C. There, I became inspired by the s u c c e s s of othe r s tudent councils throughout the state. On returning to Smith, Ibecame interested in establishing a success- ful one here. f, Today, as president of our school student council, I am proud to state that we have made our p r om i s e ma, explicit: The Student Council functions of the students, ,. for the students, and by the students. , I OFFICERS , President ...................... Williams, a brilliant passer, led the Bulls all the way to a 7-Z record that carried them to a playoff with Adkins High of Kinston. Williams makes up for his quiet and slow air by his hard work, cool head, and de- termination. His brilliant plays in the shrine bowl game have severalcolleges clamor- ing for his services. Bobby, as he is called by his many friends, is a success in other sports as well. He is starter on the varsity basket- ball team. Lnbaseballhe plays an excellent center field posi- tion and is a heavy stick man. TWO BULLS PARTICIPATE IN SHRINE BOWL Richard Williams and Bobby Williams, both seniors, were selected to play in the Shrine Bowl Game this year. This g am e features the most outstanding high school players in competition - West vs. East. We agree thatboth Richard and Bobby are outstanding Bulls and have made us proud of them. Elmer McMillian,a junior, was also elected to play at this game, but he gave up the honor in order to be able to be with the Bulls another season. The Bulls will long re- member Bobby and we all hope his understudy, Alvin Walker, will be successful. 38 TEEN-TONES STILL TOPS The Teen- '1'ones, a senior singing group-, is the tops among g roups through- out the city and obtained this record in less than a year. Their first hit wa s Juvenile Delinquent which they sang at the Junior-Senior Prom in '57, Since thenthey have com- posed s ong s and have made themselves well - known. This group consists of Willie Dukes, David Hollingsworth, Leo Campbell, Joseph Howard and Lexia Campbell. THE BULLS ARE HOT The Bulls a r e now ready for the North Carolina AAA B a S k e tb a ll Championship. Coaches Kelly and Carter have performed an excellent job in grooming these boys and now they are the hottest team in the state with a 12-Z record in the conference. The Bulls have defeated all of the best teams in the s tat e and should go all the way this year. Who can de- feat us with Big J. D. Mclntyre pouring in twenty p o int S per game,Douglas McMillan shoot- ing from all positions and re- fusing to be checked, and Leo Campbell with his c ool ball handling. I ask again Who Q.-ri stop us '? THE STUDENT COUNCIL OF '57-'58 E. E. Smith is very proud of the officers she chose for her Student C o un cil for this year. Under the leadership of Alvin Hill much progress has been mad e . The council began Srnith's first radio pro- gram, Smith Chatters ,which features news and talent at Smith. Many other projects are in the planning state. The chief aim of the council is to promote better relations among students, teachers, and their communities. N, ,.-v-nf,L.f--N N.,,,.-A., xx... This is the Senior line-up that contributed g r e a tly to the s t r e n g th of the mighty Golden Bulls of '57. The Bulls crushed almost ev e r y opponent this year, including Hillside of Durham, a te am that Smith had never beaten. The Bulls trampled Oxford, a feat that hadn't been done in many s e a s on s . But the heroic herd ran into one foe that would not g iv e in to them, a power-packed team from Adkins High of Kinston. The first game against Adkins was hard fought all the way down to the bitte r end, but the Golden gridders could not pull this one out, the final score--Adkins 7 - Smith 6. The second time these te ams met was in the battle for the conference title. The condition of the weather a.nd the playing field were practically the same as the first time they met. This was a fight of fights. When the mud stopped flying at the end of the game, the score was 0-0. Adkins, in an overtime play, blocked a kick that p rov ed to be disastrousg for in a couple of downs, they broke through a powerful Bull wall for the touchdown. Thus ended the season for the wonderful E. E. Smith Golden Bulls of '57. Thoughts which remindedme that thoughlcould not foresee the future, I was still the class prophet. Worried by this fact,l sat down under a spreading oak, and leaning my head upon this pillow of wood , I fell into the most fantastic sleep of dreams. Transported into the year of 1968, Idiscovered a little town called Smithsonia, U. S. A. Discovered is right, for the town Ifoundwas recently planted by the class of 1958. lt's an ordinary town, with churches, schools, stores, a college and homes with pretty lawns. Would you like to tour it with me '? Alright. First, there's MainStreet-lined with its little shops. On the left is the V. T. Moore Hospital. Here we find avery competent staff in cluding Dr. Betty McDonald and Nurse .Terlene Nichols, biologist Doris Cook, and Barbara Baird as head laboratory technician. Next door is the office of Franklin Davis - Attorney at Law. Across the street in the McLean Building is the public library where Oxyvenia Hughley is at work. Crossing Massey Avenue, We walk down Brown Blvd. N e a r the intersection officer Freeman of the city police escorts the school children across the street. They attend the M.S. Spivey E l e m e nta r y School. The girl with the yellow sweater on is in Miss Mary McMillian's room and down the hall frornher room is Miss W.A. Gillis's room. Oh-oh, someone seems to be having car trouble. It's J. D. Mclntyre and Leo Campbell going to referee a basketball game at E. E. Miller High School. Oh well, Butler's Esso will take care of them. I..et's see, that's Simpson Street, Merritt Street, Leach Blvd, Wright Avenue - yes, there it is, Vander's Chapel - Reverend V. D. Purcell, minister. Across the street is Parker-McLeod: Interior Decorators, Nice company. I hear they decorated the Club Fifty-Eight where the Teen-Tones a re singing. The Mc- Swain-Simrnons tearn did the Sheridan Salon where Mme. Ing ram is stylist, and Mme, Townsend is manicurist. There's a book store, I think I ' ll get a paper. Hum- I see Dr. Catherine McDaniel has an article in French Culture in today's issue. Singletary and Young are still wo rking on that top secret electronic invention. Derry Galbreath teaches electronic engineering over at I. C. Fowler University. It's located b e twe en Nineteenth Street and Fifty- Eighth Avenue. Care to look around. First there's the Spivey Language Building where Dr. Barbara Smith is head of the Franch depa rtmentg then there's the Holden Home Economics Lab o r ato ry: Marie Pratt- Director, assisted by Miss Linda Hayes and Miss Rothelrna McNeil. Over there in that ivy covered building is the McAllister Commercial Building. Mis s E. R. McKoy is in charge. Some of her classmates are working a s secretaries for large firms. Janet Wilkerson is with the Nathaniel and Marshall Accounting Co rpo ration. Now we see the Kelly-CarterGyn'1na.siurnandAthletic Field. Coaches Bobby Williams and William Carver a re in charge of the male ath- letics, while Betty Wright and Odessa Johnson a r e in charge of women's athletics. The two story building across from it houses the math and sciences depart- ments. Dr. Usher and Dr. Johnson are having their classes there. I think it's called th e Walker-Brown Building. Angelean Bethune is s e c r etary in that building also. Now, the r e 's the Primm Auditorium. They're having a guest pianist tonight Ihear. Miss Delores Melvin, reknown artist, is appear- ing on the invitation of Miss Willie Mae Waugh-director of the college music department. Gee, l'm tired, what about you? Iwish we could see more but I think this is sufficient to show the path of the cla s s of l958. They follow a road to sure success. I foresee a life of health, happiness and prosperity. For we are a class with high hopes and ambitions and will let nothing cause us to fall short of making real our drearn of a successful vocation.
